South Africa Today — When Democracy Is Evil. Will This Soon Happen Here?

Above Image: EFF leader Julius Malema leads his supporters in chant of “Shoot the boer (“Boer” is the Dutch word for farmer). Kill the farmer”. Elon Musk, who lived in South Africa until he was 17 said Malema was “openly pushing for genocide of white people in South Africa”. The New York Times and much of mainstream media reported that Malema was merely repeating an old “struggle song” from the 1990s when Blacks in South Africa were fighting against white minority rule there.  Click this link or above image to draw your own conclusion.

The United States is not a democracy and never was.  That word does not appear anywhere in our Declaration of Independence or our Constitution.  Our country was established as a constitutional republic. The government was “instituted” to “secure” the “unalienable rights” of each citizen and to limit the power of the majority.

South Africa is a tragic example of a nation that has not respected and protected the “unalienable” rights of each individual. In 1948, roughly 69% of  its 11 million people were descendants of Blacks who had moved into the country from other parts of Africa. Some 21% of them were descended from whites who had moved there from Europe. Both the Black Africans and Europeans moved into the country at the same time, beginning in the 1600s. Another 8% were descendants of Asians who had moved there between 1795 and 1910 when South Africa, India, and Hong Kong were all colonies of Great Britain.

In 1948, the government of South Africa was dominated by descendants of Europeans. In that year, it set up a system of “apartheid” (apart-ness) to separate people in the country according to race. It ignored the rights of Black South Africans by forcing them to move and live in small, remote areas of the country.  During the Cold War, Communists used this injustice to mobilize worldwide opposition to the South African government.  In 1990, worldwide pressure forced the South African government to abandon apartheid and become a democracy.  At that time, there were 27 million people in the country. Of them, 69% were descended from Black Africans, 18% from Europeans, and 3% from Asians or Indians.

Since 1990, the South African government has been a democracy dominated by  Black African voters. In 2011, some 52 million people lived in South Africa.  At that time, 79% were Black Africans, 9% where white, and 2.5% Indian/Asian descent.

A major political party in that democracy is the national socialist EFF or Economic Freedom Party led by Julius Malema. Its economic program is identical to that of Germany’s National Socialist (Nazi) Party of the 1930s.  Malema and his supporters openly demand that whites living in the country be killed or driven out, and that their property be given to Blacks.  Last month, on July 31, 2023, Malema held a rally at a stadium for thousands of his supporters.  There he led them in a chant of “Shoot the boer! (Dutch word for farmer). Kill the farmer!”

On that same day, Elon Musk, a native of South Africa and owner of Twitter posted a video of the rally on Twitter with this message:

“They are openly pushing for genocide of white people in South Africa.”

He also addressed this message to the President of South Africa: “@CyrilRamaphosa, why do you say nothing?”

Later the New York Times and other mainstream news outlets reported that the chant was merely a “struggle song” from the 1990s, and was not a threat to anyone.

Elon Musk then responded with this Tweet on August 4:

@elonmusk The New York Times actually has the nerve to support calls for genocide! If ever there was a time to cancel that publication, it is now. You can read their articles for free anyway using removepaywall.com.”

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French historian who was born in 1805, shortly after the revolution there.  In 1831, he travelled to America to study our democracy.  He wanted to know why democracy brought liberty and prosperity to the United States, while it brought dictatorship, hatred, and mass murder to France.  He wrote his findings and conclusions in a 758 book called Democracy in America.  He wrote that democracy succeeded in America while it failed in France and elsewhere in the world.  He said this was because America had an exceptional culture that did not exist in England, France, or most of Europe.
Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s Founding Fathers wrote that “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters”.
Founding Father and second U.S. President John Adams wrote, “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty”.
All three men observed that democracy in America succeeded when Americans shared certain values, habits, and institutions.  They included:
1.  Embracing Judeo-Christian Bible values such as the Ten Commandments, “Love your neighbor as yourself”, and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
2.  Adopting and respecting written constitutions that defined and limited the powers of government, and secured “unalienable” rights for each individual.
3. Forming voluntary organizations and associations to solve problems themselves, without politics or government.  As deTocqueville observed in 1835:
“Americans of all ages, all stations in life, and all types of dispositions are forever forming associations.  There are not only commercial and industrial associations in which all take part, but others of a thousand different types-religious, moral, serious, futile, very general and very limited, immensely large and very minute. . . In every case, at the head of any new undertaking, where in France you would find the government, or in England some territorial magnate, in the United States you are sure to find an association”.
