How to Score Off Field

Rate this book
I, Drew Colter, have a confession to make… I ’m burnt out and need a break.
From school, from football—from living with roommates, my obnoxious twin brother and our older brothers girlfriend. The only person who I can talk to these days is my best friend from high school, and he’s back in our hometown and halfway across the country. Somehow he convinces me that maybe…

…Maybe it’s time to take a trip. Party. Have some fun.

That fun does not include his sister .

Long black hair and even longer legs, Tess Donahue had lost the braces and gained the confidence she never had as a teenager. She’s hilarious, pretty—and when I see her in those cowboy boots?

Whoa.

Stolen glances. Flirty banter. One drunk filled night.

Suddenly, my uncomplicated weekend of ‘ living a little’ in my hometown becomes a lifetime being tied to the one girl that was off limits.

What Did I Miss?!!

I say this because…well let me start at the beginning…
I was really looking forward to reading Drew’s story as I love a sensitive MC who isn’t afraid to show all sides of themselves. And reading the previous books in this series, I just knew Drew was going to be special and he was. Same goes for Tess, I loved she had a crush on him for ages and she finally gets to live out her dreams. The banter between them was good too but this story could have been so much more if only.

If you read the synopsis then I think you can figure out where this book is headed with a surprise pregnancy. It’s also a brothers best friend trope and college romance. All these things I like to read. But here’s where I have a problem, it’s the way the pregnancy was dealt with that I found medically incorrect and inappropriate and misleading to young readers who’d not know any better. I also think the brothers actions where out of character and felt it was just thrown in to stretch out the storyline but then made it unauthentic. What I really disliked though was how it all ended, abruptly. I didn’t get a good HEA conclusion and other things where left up in the air. Did Tess go to a doctor for confirmation, either way? What happened between Grady and Drew? How did Drew and Tess work through the pregnancy and long distance? To me, this ended as if SN was too busy elsewhere and lost interest in giving this series a complete HEA for all the brothers. So what did I miss? Is there going to be another book at some point? Or are bonus chapters out there that I haven’t seen yet? I don’t think this is the first time it’s happened with this author and it makes me wary when starting a new book in future.

The last book in the series and Drew's story is what I anticipated most. Drew was as I got to know him in the previous books, serious, a bit shy and a guy to keep. It is a typical brothers best friend story and therefore a forbidden romance. The book has a trigger, which you should check before reading. This may be shocking for some readers. I read the arc and after some comments from arc readers, the author made a few changes to the final book which went on sale. The author did a good job changing a few chapters, but the subject was still glossed over. This should’ve been handled better. The story had an interesting trope, but I didn't have the feeling about this book that I had about the previous two books in this series. I can't put my finger on why this was the case. Perhaps the chemistry between Drew and Tess, perhaps it were all the loose ends this book had. The two main characters have been through a lot together, but their connection did not become much stronger in my opinion. The ending did not give me as much satisfaction as I had hoped. It ended abruptly and it’s definitely a hfn ending. The author wrapped it all up and for a final book in this series I expected more. I don’t know, maybe an overview on how all three couples were doing a few years forward. Instead we’re only left with an unsatisfied happy for now. Unfortunately my least favorite book in this series.

🎶 Sometimes I wonder; when you sleep. Are you ever dreaming of me? Sometimes when I look into your eyes. I pretend you're mine, all the damn time. 'Cause I like you 🎶

Tessa Lynn Donahue (h) has had a crush on her brothers friend for as long as she can remember, but she thought she was over it. When her brother tells her that his friend is coming to his hometown to visit and he needs a ride, Tessa reluctantly agrees because she doesn’t know how she can hide her feelings. Drew Colter (H) never noticed Tessa, but now that she’s there in front of him, and he doesn’t know if he can stay away.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

🎶 Is it cool that I said all that? Is it chill that you're in my head? 🎶

“I mean. You’re Grady’s little sister.”

“No, I get it. I was mousy and quiet. Of course, you wouldn’t have noticed me.”

If you pretend the MMC and the FMC are teenagers and not in their 20s, then the dialogue is not bad. However, if you remind yourself that the FMC is 20, then most scenes will give you secondhand embarrassment, and it's not fun. I mean, I'm 20, but I hope I don't act the way she does. It didn't come as a bold FMC; Tess made me want to close the book. I understand having a childhood crush, but she was so forward when Drew didn't recognize or care for her. During their first interaction, he couldn't even recall what she looked like and only took notice because he realized she was attractive and different from the girl he once knew. He only saw her as his best friend's little sister and never as her person. I would have liked the book if they had shared moments in the past, and that would have explained her crush on him; instead, it felt superficial. Did she like the idea that he was a popular football player? I don't understand what was so special about him if they never had a conversation. After a while, she should have moved on. I don't like that he never noticed her until her appearance changed. Are you telling me he was always around her house and didn't notice her at all? I don't know what to make of that. I kept reading for some redemption or development; in that sense, the book will keep you entertained.

Then, the unexpected happens. You can guess what I'm referring to. I don't think there was proper development in the "relationship," and it felt unnatural. Tess and Drew did not have chemistry, and it felt forced. I kept reading because I was so far into the story that I wanted to know how it would end. It's alright. I've read a book that I needed to DNF right away, but I wouldn't say I loved the execution of the plot. It felt like they were together because it was convenient and not because they cared for each other. Drew didn't want to be the only one of his brothers who was single, so he took the first opportunity to be with someone and ran with it. Meanwhile, Tess was finally with someone who she wanted her entire life. Will you keep reading? Yes. I wanted Drew to say, "I did notice you when you were younger. How could I not?" It's the romance reader in me. I expected him to be like other fictional men, but he was the opposite.

Then, the book had healing topics after the one trope had a plot twist. Once you read it, you'll know. There were a lot of tropes added that the execution was not the best. It was enough to be intrigued to finish the book, but it didn't become one of my favorite reads. In the nicest way, it was an okay read, and I wish there had been better development between the characters to indicate that they cared for each other on an emotional level rather than a physical one. I did appreciate the ending and how there weren't declarations; Tess and Drew were taking their relationship at a different pace, and that was the highlight.

There was an interesting format; there were plenty of Tess’s diary entries from when she was younger, which was cute. Mainly to know how giddy she was around Drew most of the time.

¸♡ OVERALL ♡¸.•

This book reminded me of the awkward stage of a new relationship (I’ve never dated anyone), but I imagine this is how it would be. Tess and Drew were learning about each other and discovering parts about one another they didn’t know about before, and it’s an innocent first relationship. Drew is the shy one in the relationship, and Tess is more upfront, so they help each other in ways to push the dynamic further. It was a quick, lighthearted read.

The third book in the Campus Legends series, this is a funny and sweet NA romance that is painfully awkward, but endearingly relatable. It’s a fun read which also brings some emotion, and I really enjoyed it.

This is the story of Drew Colter. A college football player, he is following in the footsteps of his brothers (who have the earlier books in the series - this one can standalone). But in a family full of rowdy, football-obsessed alpha males, he is the quiet, sensitive one. He’s single and unhappy about it, he’s not sure what his future holds, and he’s feeling generally overwhelmed with life. So when his best friend from high school invites him back to their hometown for a weekend of partying, he jumps at the chance.

Tess is the younger sister of Drew’s best friend, and she has been in love with him since middle school. Her crush was almost obsessive, but at two years younger than Drew, he never looked at her as anything other than the shy ‘little sister’. Now she’s all grown up and right in his face during his trip to their hometown, and he’s suddenly paying attention.

It's a fun set-up, and so funny as we watch these two together. Drew is a nice guy, kind and caring and adorably shy and awkward. Tessa is equally as awkward, and their early attempts at flirting and ‘getting to know’ each other are so entertaining. Oh, I cringed, but the too-subtle flirting, almost-missed opportunities and head-smacking moments they go through are all very relatable, and they do eventually find their way into bed together before Drew has to head back to school.

“That was my very first seduction, okay?”
“I personally thought it went pretty well. Ten out of ten would recommend.”

It turns out their weekend together wasn’t enough for either of them, so they stay in touch over texts and calls. Slowly and honestly, they open up to each other. They talk about everything, there’s no judgement between them, they are free to be themselves, and they’re so freaking cute! But just when they’re starting to get into their groove, a positive pregnancy test gives them a whole heap of new challenges to navigate.

Our eyes meet, and at that moment, it’s as if all the complications and uncertainties fade away. There’s a sense of unity between us, a shared understanding that we’re in this together, no matter what lies ahead.

I thought I knew what I was getting into with this book, but Sara Ney throws us a few curveballs, which kept me madly flipping pages, desperate to see what was going to happen. I was glued to my kindle watching it all play out, and it’s a bit of a rollercoaster, but I didn’t feel it as much as I was hoping. There are some emotional moments, and some tender scenes, but there just wasn’t that emotional punch that I was expecting.

The ending comes suddenly, and it’s a ‘happy for now’ finish, which I thought was realistic. But there remain some story threads left up in the air that I wanted closure on . I wanted more from the love story and was hoping for an epilogue to provide some closure, but instead it’s left up to us to imagine what happens – which I’m never a fan of. But it’s a sweet story and an entertaining read.

3 stars.

This one is a tough one to review. Not because it's bad, but because it just wasn't as amazing as the first two books in this series.

How to Score Off Field is Drew's story with Tessa. Out of all the Colter brothers, Drew is the one who's most in touch with his feelings; therefore he's the nicest of them.

As much as I wanted to love this book (because I loved the first two), this one just felt rushed, too many loose ends, the characters dialogue felt a bit juvenile at times for their ages, and the chemistry just wasn't there for me.

It's a very cute story, do not get me wrong. It just fell flat for me and just stayed at the "right down the middle", ok read for me.

Didn’t finish. So cliche and played out

I have liked the authors other series and the previous books in this series. This book contained one dimensional characters and had the lamest plot line. I say this as a pregnant person, but the whole “accidental” pregnancy trope especially when these idiots did NOTHING to prevent pregnancy has ruined this author for me. Like I get books are fantasies, but I don’t want to spend time imagining dumbasses.

How To Score Off Field is the third standalone romance novel in the Campus Legends Series by Sara Ney. This older brother's best friend romance follows football superstar Drew Colter and his, unbeknownst to him, leading lady Tessa Donahue.

Drew is burnt out from life and from football. So when his best friend from back home, Grady Donahue, invites him to a weekend of bachelor party fun. He decides to take him up on his offer. After all, anything is better than sitting around watching his twin brother get everything that Drew has always wanted. An epic romance. So with a bag of clothes packed, he hops on a plane and heads back home.

From the first moment Tess can remember, she's loved Drew Colter. That love was never reciprocated due to him thinking of her as his best friend's little sister. When Grady tasks her with the mission of collecting Drew at the airport, she

But know times have changed... Tess is older, wiser, and more experienced. And she isn't about to let Drew walk out of her life so easily this time. This time she's got a game plan... She just has to get Drew to see her as a woman, and not as his best friends younger sister.

My Thoughts:

Okay, I have so much to talk about when it comes to Sara Ney's How To Score Off Field. Mostly good situations, but be warned there were a few moments that had me questioning whether I liked this one or loved this one. So let's get started.

Sara Ney is still a fairly new to me author. I say fairly new as I've only read six, now Seven, novels from her. I love her writing style and her ability to draw her reader's in from the very first page. I love the fight her characters endure to truly gain that epic happily ever after. Trust me when I say, these characters endure a lot. I also love her ability to add comedy into her romances. And I love how flawlessly she maneuvers her comedy into slight angst. Basically, when you read a novel from Sara Ney, you're getting all the feels, all the emotions, and sometimes all the drama! And I'm here for that! How To Score Off Field was a great read, but I have my qualms. So let's get started with this review.

Let's discuss the characters in this novel. First one in the hot seat is Drew Colter. Drew is your typical boy next door book boyfriend. He's a cutie with a heart of gold. He's the brother out of all the Colter's who wants love, wants the relationship, and wants the white picket fence. But no girl has met his expectations. I have to say, I loved this man's overall vibe!

And then we have Tess. I have to say one thing, I absolutely adored her childhood/teenage journal entries! I loved seeing young love play out through her thoughts. It reminded me of those times where I would write my elementary crush’s name in a journal dozens of times. Sara Ney took me all the way back to my own childhood with this novel! But anyway, Tess is as sweet as sugar, but she also has this determination that is so uncanny! Almost as if the world is hers and she has the power and she uses that power in the kindest of ways. I don’t know, I really loved her character.

The chemistry between Drew and Tess was hot as hell! I loved the small talks and the friendship that built between them. I also loved the slight forbidden and secret relationship vibes. Everything was flawless, until the second half of the novel. In my honest opinion, I felt like important scenes after the half-way point were rushed through. There were moments, I as a reader, needed time to digest and connect to the tragedy of what had occured. I needed to feel that grief that Tess should have felt, but sadly, it felt like that moment in time was swept under the rug. There were a few more moments that were rushed, but that one was the pivotal moment that I needed more connection from.

Overall, I loved the relationship between Drew and Tess. I loved the friendship and the romance. I loved the quick wit and the sexual chemistry between these two. It was fun to see Tess fall in love with the adult version of the boy she once loved before. If that makes sense. I loved seeing her get her happily ever after. But as I said above, I wanted a lot more from the last half of this novel. With that being said, I can’t wait to see what Sara Ney will publish next! I’m excited for what’s to come!!

Oh my gosh it’s been a while since I read a Sara Ney book and honestly I do not know why…her books are absolutely brilliant. they’re fun and packed with drama, my absolute favourite reads!

Drew is the last single Colter and realising that has started getting to him. He’s football focused and so focused he doesn’t even realise the attention he gets from the girls that surround him. Until one girl gives him no choice but to look.

Drew is a kind and generous guy and honestly, I just wanted to hug him all the time.

Tess oh this girl had me laughing so hard. She’s shy yet bold, nervous but cheeky especially when it comes to her first crush, Drew. Having him back home for the first time in what feels like forever has her tumbling back into her teenage crush. She said what she’s thinking when she’s nervous and you just can’t help but have a little giggle.

Tess was so much fun!

The two together? Yeah that was absolutely scorching hot chemistry. I absolutely loved it!!!

I’m not going into much more details because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone but when I say this book was good, it was GOOD! They both have obstacles to over come throughout the book and watching navigate their way through it was great to read.

Sara brought two amazing characters to life in this book, now I’m just sad it’s over.

How To Score Off The Field is a fun and banter filled forbidden romance. A story filled with happiness, awkwardness and some twists you won’t expect coming and most definitely one you won’t be able to put down.

Sara Ney did it again with an amazing story with another one of the Colter brothers. This is the third book in the Campus Legends series and one of my favorites so far.

- brothers best friend
- sports romance
- Forbidden love
- Duel POV

Drew Colter is a football legacy, while all of his brothers play he was expected to play as well. As you are reading you find out that maybe that wasn’t always his dream. While he loves the game you can see his is burned out of playing and needs to get away. His bestfriend asks him to come home for a bachelor party where he can get away from the game and have a fun relaxing weekend. But his bestfriend Grady is hardly around all weekend which leaves Drew with Grady’s younger sister Tess.

Tess has had a crush on drew since she was in middle school and wants nothing more than to be around Drew, and now she has her chance.

The chemistry between Drew and Tess is amazing. I loved seeing their story unfold and watching them grow in their relationship and seeing them tackle the challenges that they are faced with and they are big ones.

Sara Ney did such a wonderful job at keeping you captivated. Between the spice and banter of this book I did not want to put it down. I cannot wait to read more of her books!

This one is different from what I am used to with Sara, so please check trigger warnings before reading if you are sensitive to certain topics.
Drew needs a reset. His best friend from high school tells him he needs to come home for the weekend for a bachelor party to get away, even if it is just for a little while. When he goes home, he sees his best friend's little sister, Tess. She's all grown up and he can't stop watching her all night. With his best friend working all day the next day, Tess is set to entertain Drew for the day. Instantly you feel the chemistry. Tess has been in love with Drew for so many years she lost count, but worries she will never be seen as anything other than his best friend's little sister.
Drew knows he can't stay away from Tess and obviously that all comes to a head and things happen. They both go back to their respective colleges, but continue long distance because for both of them, they can't shake the feeling they are meant to be with the other.
There are sensitive topics that come up in this book and while I understand that Sara wanted to make this book light, I feel like it could still be triggering to some. I will post trigger warnings at the end so that if you don't want to read them, you can avoid that portion.
I really thought Drew was a sweetheart. I have wanted his story for so long; he is just such a genuine good guy and those are my favorite kind. He was looking for more and he knew that he found that in Tess. Their texts back and forth were my favorite part of the book.

Really disappointing for last book in the series. Didn't feel the connection between the MCs, cringed at the immature way the whole pregnancy thing was treated and I hated this cover from first sight. Which ended up being justified because this cover is bogus. In no page in this book did we got Drew wear a uniform or play football. Plus he stated from the start that he had lost his passion for the sport and was considering quiting and this guy doesn't emanate Drew's gentleness or caring character at all.

4.5 stars actually!

Of course I was so excited to find out about how the “quiet” twin’s HEA was going to happen, especially after his brother had been pretending to be him in the last book. So getting Drew’s point of view and his story was something I was glad for. This was a secret/surprise baby story, but with even a bit more of a surprise/turn of events at the end. I liked the way the author had the whole story play out.

The crush that Tess had on Drew and all her diary entries were a lot of fun to kind of relive interspersed with how the present day was going. There was also a similar bit of drama to the first two books, but it wasn’t the end dramatic issue to overcome, so that was good. But it also showed how similar the brothers in this series lives were. I feel like the kind of back and forth the two went through on how much the other one liked them was more realistic seeming than in other books, so I liked that a lot.

Even with the kind of drama this story had, it was a low drama story in my opinion, which I did enjoy. Even though I know our Coulter brothers are all partnered up now, I feel like there has to be an extra epilogue or bonus story for at least this couple according to something written on the last page of this one. Now I’m left wondering what characters, what world, Sara Ney will bring to us next!

Tess has had a crush on her older brother’s best friend, Drew since her teen years. When he comes back to their hometown for a bachelor party she gets the chance to keep him entertained while her brother is at work. The two go out together and really enjoy hanging out together. The conversation flows, it’s really cute and flirty.
Before he heads back to college they give in to their attraction and have a super steamy night together.
They text and call each other and slowly get to know each other. I thought this was a fun and entertaining way for them to start a possible relationship. Without sex as a distraction they knew that they liked each other and connected.
Drew is a sweetheart, he’s not a “bad boy” or an egomaniac. He’s thoughtful and kind. Tess is a bit more outgoing than him which draws him out and I think it makes them a good match.
They go through a serious and emotional situation together. Both handle it well and don’t let it come between them.
It’s a different kind of romance, it had less excitement and intensity for me. I didn’t really connect with the characters. I’ve read the two previous books in the series and really loved them. I think because this is the “sweet” brother it’s not as much to my taste. I think fans of sweet romance will enjoy it.
It’s a low drama, mildly angsty sweet romance with a bit of steam and heat.

Learning to love!

Drew Colter is the last of his brothers to be in a relationship. He always thought he'd be the first. When he gets invited back to his home town for a bachelor party, he jumps at the chance as he's been feeling a little down about where his life is going. When he arrives back home, he's picked up.from the airport by Tess Donahue, his best friends little sister. What Drew doesn't expect is to feel attracted to her, at times he is clueless towards women. Tess has agreed under protest to collect Drew, she's been crushing on him since she was 11. Neither expects the chemistry to explode between them or that it would result in an unplanned pregnancy. How will their fledgling relationship cope with the bombshell? Will it make them stronger or will it rip them apart?
I just love how Sara writes her characters and Drew and Tess are no exception. Their banter is witty and their chemistry is off the charts. Can't wait for the next book!

I’m giving an extra half star for the Hero.

I’ve been impatiently waiting for Drew’s story from the very beginning. He was the quiet, sensitive brother/twin. The one that wasn’t a manwhore. He couldn’t wait to find a good girl and be in a relationship.

Unfortunately, I went in with my expectations too high. The heroine was ok. I didn’t like how she handled the pregnancy. Drew was great throughout the entire thing. He could have been pissed off (and rightly so) but he handled it maturely. Especially how his childhood “best friend” totally sold him out. Douche

I would have liked to know what Drew planned on doing with football. That was never addressed.

HFN ending

I’m really hoping there’s another book in this series. A glimpse into the future with all the brothers.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it did not disappoint! I loved how the character development was written and even though it’s a forbidden romance, I was here for it! The chemistry between Drew and Tess was amazing and it had me hooked from the first page to the last. Even though they had a lot of challenges to face throughout the book and had some miscommunication along the way, they both were fighting to make sure the bond they had remained. Also, I liked how there were flashbacks from Tess’s POV, which were her diary entries. It flowed into understanding the growth and confidence she has now from when she was younger, which made reading how their relationship grew likable. Definitely recommend reading the entire Campus Legends series!

I just love the Colter brothers. Drew Colter is more quiet, sensitive and not your typical jock. He is the kind of boyfriend you want. He doesn’t want to be single, but hasn’t met the right girl.
Tessa has had a crush on Drew since she was a kid. He was her brother’s best friend, and not even on Drew’s radar.
Fast forward to the present and Drew is coming home for a bachelor party. Tessa is at the bachelorette party, and finally their worlds collide.
I loved the bond that they formed. It was so easy between them. They had their trials and tribulations, and had to work through some difficult times, but they became stronger for it.
This is book 3 in the Campus Legends series. How to Score Off Field is a cute, brothers best friend, secret crush story with great banter and an emotional story.

What do you get when you have a girl with a crush, some unrequited love and a case of mistaken identity oh and he's your brother's best friend?...You get How to Score Off Field by Sara Ney.

I absolutely rattled through Tess and Drew's story. It is so readable and captured my attention from start to finish. I laughed, I cried and at one point, I was red with rage.

Initially I felt quite sorry for Tess, I mean we've all been there right? Drew however stole the show for me and convinced me that Tess was equally as amazing and his perfect match. There were even some flashes of brilliance from an unlikely direction.

All in all this is a feel good romance that ticks lots of 'tropey' boxes that should delight most readers. It certainly delighted me!

great story but…

This has been such a great series but this book kind of disappointed me. I feel like things were left unfinished. No explanation really for Grady’s actions and no epilogue =(
It felt a bit rushed there at the end. Especially with what they went through.

Since I met the Colter brothers I knew that Drew was going to be my favorite and wow Sara Ney made me wait for him. But I think it was worth it because Drew & Tess's story was too cute, innocent and melted my heart.

I think Tess shares the spot with Posey as my favorite female characters from this author! Tess has been in love with Drew since she met him when she was 11 years old, but he always saw her as his best friend's little sister, yet she never missed the opportunity to write about him in her diary, something that Sara shows us throughout the book and that I loved about this character. BUT years later, when Tess thinks she has overcome this childhood crush, she is the acharming, direct girl, who knows what she wants, and although she has doubts, she also knows how to get it and she steals Drew's heart from the most innocent, real and simple way in the world, one of my favorite things about her character. Furthermore, when things get complicated between them, despite her insecurities, Tess manages to communicate with him, tell him what she feels and accept advice from the people around him.

Drew was everything I expected from his character! a popular athlete who has doubts about his professional future, a nerd who loves science and is very intelligent, but who doesn't know how to interact with people very well, hates being the center of attention and is determined to find love . One of the things I liked most about him was reading him having doubts about his life, showing his most tender, sweet and awkward side every time he is with Tess, and sharing the funniest and most bizarre interactions with Drake, although I have to say that I would have loved Sara to exploit much more of that existential crisis that this character has, and that we saw from the first book of the series.

Tess & Drew have a sweet, tender, beautiful and complicated love story that begins as a one night stand when he returns to Texas to spend the weekend with Grady, Tess's brother, and immediately the connection between Drew & Tess is there, although they are both a little clumsy in letting the other know about their mutual attraction which was very cute to read and made me realize that they are the perfect couple! I loved reading them getting to know each other more and more, how Tess's feelings for Drew grow as time goes by, and his get stronger, and when their night together gets complicated, the two do what they can to stay afloat, Drew is the most adorable and understanding, and does his best to be by Tess' side and show her his true feelings.

Terrible!! Editing, storyline, characters… not good

I don’t know where to start with how terrible this book was. It was as if the author threw together a bunch of storyline notes and published it. The editing in this book was horrendous. For example, for half of the book the main character went to college in Wisconsin then for the second half he was going to college in Illinois. That is just one example of many that can be given. There were so many times in this book that I truly did not want to finish it because the story was terrible! Highly do not recommend. It’s unfortunate because I did enjoy the first book in the series. The second book in the series was OK. Then this one was awful. Will not read another one of hers.

Either Sara Ney's quality has plummeted in the last several years, my reading preferences have changed, or I'm misremembering how good her work used to be. Or a combination of all three. But I can safely say this will be my last Sara Ney book. You know it's not good when you get to the end of a book and think, "WTF did I just read."

Did I like ANYTHING about this book? Honestly, no. Which is why this review will be a little different, because I opted to make a list of EVERYTHING I disliked. I've tagged any spoilers!

1. The cringey, over the top millennial humor at the top of each chapter. It actually started off strong, relatively speaking, with, "I'm beginning to think I'm single because I never forwarded those chain letters I got in high school..." (though it probably should have said elementary or middle school, because who still forwarded chain emails in HIGH school?) But oh my god, did Ney just scroll through popular 2012 Tumblr meme blogs like socially awkward penguin to find some of these? Examples include "Maybe I can seduce him with my awkwardness," "I'm so used to being single that I don't even know what I'd do with a boyfriend. Do I walk it? Does it need to be fed? I'm not ready," and "My boyfriend is so handsome, looking all invisible and shit."

2. The southern dialect!!! Too many verbs ended in 'in instead of 'ing. The double negatives ("you weren't doing nothin'").

3. There is ZERO chemistry between the main characters! Even their physical attraction to each other somehow lacks chemistry. They are so awkward together. I found their relationship unbelievable.

4. The female main character says she HAD endometriosis as a teenager, but she now, as a 21-year-old, has regular enough periods that being four days late means she must be pregnant. I'm sorry, there's so much wrong with this I don't even know where to begin. It is VERY rare for endometriosis to just go away (early treatment can drastically reduce symptoms, but the FMC doesn't mention receiving treatment), but if hers magically did, then why does she think she can't get pregnant? I don't think the endometriosis diagnosis added anything to the story; if anything, it was irresponsible due to clear lack of research.

5. The FMC literally NEVER goes to the doctor to confirm her pregnancy or, you know, make sure everything is normal considering she past-tense HAD endometriosis as a teenager so there might be some complications???

6. Um, if the FMC is less than 12 weeks pregnant and this is her first pregnancy, then how does she already have a baby bump? It makes me laugh thinking of the MMC just rubbing her bloated belly that he mistook for a baby bump.

7.

8. The FMC's ASSHOLE brother! Seriously, what is his problem? His character is a huge exaggeration of why I do not like the brother's best friend trope. Not that I wanted him to redeem himself, because what he did was so irredeemable, but there was no resolution.

9. The MMC's mom?? So many loose ends.

10. Why is he still playing football?? I wish there had been some resolution there.

11. The out of place COVID mention... "Does she have Covid and didn't want me to know? Shit. Do I need to get tested?" At this point, it had been a month since they last saw each other and slept together. So, dude. Relax. It was confusing and shocking to see the word COVID, especially considering they were at bachelor and bachelorette parties, flying on planes, and hooking up without a care in the world (granted, they live in Texas, which stopped believing in COVID a long time ago), and NOW he's worried about COVID? This is only the second book I've read with it, the first being at the beginning of the pandemic/lockdown (The Two of Us by Kennedy Fox), and I've got to say, it's still too soon. I read romance to escape, and in my fictional worlds, COVID never happened.

12. The old diary entries were really unnecessary and didn't add anything to the relationship dynamic that we didn't already know from the FMC saying she had a huge crush on the MMC as a kid. I stopped reading them after a while.

13. I hadn't paid attention to the cover until now, but at first I thought I had the wrong one, because the tropes aren't accurate. Then I looked at the previous book cover for the MMC's identical twin brother, and the tropes are inaccurate there, too. Had it not been for the titles, I would have thought the covers were accidentally switched. I don't know what happened, but this book is not enemies to lovers, Drew is not considered the "hot twin," and he is not a "reformed rake" (why couldn't she have just said "reformed player" since this isn't a historical romance??) or "promiscuous" by any stretch of the imagination (his twin, on the other hand, is/was).

I could probably keep going, but you get the idea. The ending is definitely a happy for now (HFN), not happily ever after (HEA), which isn't my cup of tea but might be yours. My honest to god reaction at the end was, "Wait wtf it's just over???"

Fun and sexy series end
4 Stars

How to Score Off Field is the third (and presumably last) in the Campus Legends series about the four Colter brothers, football gods on campus and off. (The oldest brother got his story in The Secret Roommate, part of the Accidentally in Love series.) While Drake - Drew’s twin - does appear, and the other brothers and their partners are mentioned, this book completely stands alone.

Drew is the quieter of all his brothers. More serious, more thoughtful and generally a bit sweeter. He’s still a gorgeous, big deal football star at his university in Michigan but lately, he’s been feeling restless which is what sends him back to Texas and his hometown. It’s surprisingly unusual to have a new-adult hero that has the same or similar insecurities and thoughts as the heroine. It was refreshing and didn’t make Drew any less of likeable, strong and sexy man.

Tess was somewhat dichotomous (I know, how smart do I feel?) or more accurately, since we get her diary extracts when she was a young teen and then get to see her as a more confident young woman - I found it hard at times to reconcile who she was now. Every time she was sassy or seductive with Drew - I would wonder what happened to that girl with braces who cried in her diary because he didn’t notice her! But honestly, she was a really likeable character. A great blend of sassy and sweet - and acted exactly the way most of us would in her situation.

The chemistry between Drew and Tess was cute and sweet - but also scorching at times. They were both adorably awkward on occasion but at other times, so delicious and squirmy. I especially liked their sexy FaceTime calls! But they have chemistry in other ways, too. I love their text conversations and also their hugs. It’s like they really took comfort from one another and matched-up together so well.

One of the main reasons that I didn’t give this book 5 stars is due to Drew. Even if you haven’t read the previous book in the series, we still get told in this story that Drew has been feeling a bit down recently. He doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life and who he is as a person outside of football and his famous family. I was looking forward to having that, if not resolved, then at least addressed by the end of the book. Perhaps he could have decided to focus on engineering instead of football, decided to enter the draft or even move to live with Tess. Since I’m assuming this will be the end of the series, I would have liked to have seen an epilogue just so we know Tess and Drew are doing well.

There is a trigger warning accompanying this book and I can imagine, especially for someone who has gone through something similar, this can be quite upsetting. It was sad and tough to read but I think was dealt with appropriately and did help move the story and relationship along. But this is very subjective so do read other reviews or the trigger warning on the author’s website if you feel you need to.

Sara Ney’s writing style is always so fun, fresh and different to read. She writes like a stream of consciousness from her characters - like you’re actually speaking to them or listening to their internal thoughts. It’s hilarious, honest and I love reading her work. This story wasn’t as snarky or cheeky as previous books, probably because Drew is definitely quieter than crazy arrogant (but still somehow loveable) twin, Drake.

You’re going to want to set aside a few hours to just binge this fun, flirty and sexy story. If you’ve ever had a crush on someone you thought was out of your league (hello, Henry Cavill) then you’ll cheer so hard for Tess to get her guy. It’s eminently readable and I was flipping pages so hard just to read one more chapter. It was lovely to see the final Colter brother meet his match and I can only hope we meet this bunch of characters in a future Ms Ney book so I can get some sort of epilogue! But still 4 stars for what is a very enjoyable book.

How to Score Off Field is my first read by new to me author Sara Ney.
Although it is an interconnected story with being book three in Campus Legends series, it can be read as a Standalone.
This Best Friends Little Sister, Forbidden Romance follows the narrative of MMC Drew Colter and FMC Tessa ‘Tess’ Lynn Mirabelle Donahue through the telling of their dual POVs.

When it came to the storyline, although the blurb made it seem typical with the whole following Drew's journey of falling for his Best Friends Little Sister, Forbidden Romance.
There was more to it than that, especially with the addition of the layout to the story.
Sara definitely ensured it wasn’t just a back and forth of chapters between Drew and Tess, given what else she included, as their story did go further back than the present. Though mostly on Tess side.
Plus the fact of the two having grown up in the same town and near each other.

There were a few focuses to be had in the exploration of the narrative. One being the characters themselves.
Seeing where Drew and Tess are in their lives with hearing about it from them themselves, given their POV chapters that had them opening up to us. Allowing us to see the development of their characters with growth being done and that too over the course of the book.

The other focus was their developing relationship, going from being sort of strangers-since their different ages and Drew being Tess’s older brother’s friend having kept them apart-to now blossoming into something more after meeting again many years later.
This aspect was what ended up being more in the limelight, since there was a lot to explore, particularly with the surprise twists that Sara threw in leading Drew and Tess on a deeper journey than they could’ve expected. Whilst testing them since it caused some ups and downs, considering the drama that arose creating tension for both parties and hurdles for them to face and overcome.

Although it was a good read to me, since it did have its pros, having completed the reading. Unfortunately it wasn’t without its issues for me that just couldn’t be overlooked.

Not going to lie after reading the book, it did take me awhile to decide on the rating. Still not even sure yet if it will stay the same or change after. And that's mostly because of a couple of different factors.

One of my first issues was the full description of menial tasks that was included, like changing clothes, shaving and some other things.
Having to read the whole process of the tasks just seemed so unnecessary IMO, since it wasn’t needed as it didn’t add to the storyline other than being a filler. Which is why to me it could’ve done without in all honesty.

My other issue was more of concern and critique surrounding a sensitive subject matter that played a part in the story.
Although it did take me awhile to figure out if that was what it was. And that too because initially it had me unsure of it at first, since the way that it was mentioned and spoken about left me slightly lost and confused.
When Tess brought it up by mentioning it the first few times had me second guessing myself, as it did seem like one thing, but other times it came across as the other.
But even when later on the book it did become a little more clearer, it wasn’t without its issues.
Since it was such a delicate and sensitive subject matter at hand, it could've been handled with more care and respect IMO, instead of making it seem and come across as no big deal seeing as how it was bought up in being thrown in left and right with nonchalant. Making it not sit right with me.

In the end, despite my issues, there is no denying that Sara Ney still came through in other aspects of Drew and Tess story for me. Which is why it can be said How to Score Off Field managed to be a good read.

CW: pregnancy loss, fertility issues.

How to Score Off Field is the third book in the Campus Legends series and stars the final single Colter brother, Drew, and the woman who has crushed on him since childhood, Tess. This book was a lovely end to this series, although, it can be read as a standalone. It's a NA romance with some minor sports (football) elements, full of adorably awkward flirting and dorky banter.

Drew is the quieter brother in a family of very prominent personalities. He's tired of his single status and isn't as passionate about his football career as his brothers. He also doesn't know that his best friend's little sister has been in love with him since childhood.

Tess has grown up a lot since she last saw Drew. Gone is the over-the-top crush on someone who has never even spared her a glance, and you can clearly see her growth between the early diary entries and her current POV. She's still quite awkward, but it's the kind you'd expect from a young 21-year old woman who is still new to relationships and flirting (especially when faced with your long ago crush).

This is a cute and quirky romance between two awkward young adults, but it does feature some pretty hard topics (please check CWs before reading it). I won't give everything away (if you're okay with the CWs listed, you should read this book for yourself) but will say to expect some emotional scenes as these two characters navigate their feelings for each other and the decisions they need to make for their post-college lives.

One thing I do want to discuss is the endometriosis rep. As someone with endometriosis, I love to see endo rep in romance books. It's a chronic illness that affects approximately 1 in 10 people with a uterus and can significantly impact people's lives/quality of life.

As such, I would have loved to see more about it in this book. I had so many questions about Tess' diagnosis. When was she diagnosed? What were her symptoms, if any? If no symptoms, why was she diagnosed? (The two main reasons people are checked for endo are long-lasting, debilitating symptoms or a struggle to fall pregnant over a length of time). How was she diagnosed (e.g., laparoscopy)?

I would have really loved a flashback scene of the conversation she had with her doctor since their discussion played a significant role in the events in this book. Especially, since so many doctors try to shove contraception (the pill, IUD/mirena, etc.) at their patients as the main treatment option (it's not). Although, maybe this isn't as common anymore in the US with all the current body autonomy/reproductive rights issues over there? While I'm very appreciative of having endo rep in a book, I think it left a few questions, and I would've loved to see more about it.

Overall though, this book was a fun read with many sweet moments, a lot of character development, and some (relatable) emotional situations that I felt added a little depth to the storyline. Sara Ney is a wonderful writer, and I can't wait to see what stories she brings to life next.

Tess Donahue has had a crush on her brother Grady’s best friend since she was 11 years old. Being 3 years younger she was never noticed by Grady or his friends but she kept on telling her diary how much she wanted him to notice her. Now that she has entered into college herself she tells herself she’s over her crush but deep down she knows she hasn’t.

Drew Colter has a family legacy to follow in football whether he likes it or not. He and his brothers have all been forced into the game and have received college scholarships into D1 schools to make sure they make it into the big leagues. But Drew’s not sure if he wants it anymore and a chance to go home for the weekend may just be what he needs to clear his mind.

When Tess has to pick up Drew from the airport sparks fly but both know Grady would never approve of anything happening between them but is Tess willing to risk it all for something she has wanted for so long?

This was a great read filled with some humour, sex and some emotional moments that make you wonder what is going to happen next.

Tess was a great character who had been invisible for so long behind the shadows of her brother that she was never seen. Now she had a chance to be seen by others and try and live her own life. I loved her friendship with Miranda and she had some family issues that made her seem a lot closer to Miranda. She was definitely grown up in this book yet she was also a really good girl who didn’t want to settle or to let things slip by, no matter how scared she was.

Drew was so much different than his brothers and didn’t want the life or the fame that football provided. He just wanted to be “nameless” and live the life that he wanted for himself and not one that was predetermined for him. He didn’t want the “sports bunnies” or causal sex as that wasn’t him at all.

There was so much awkward chemistry between Tess and Drew because of Grady. Both unknowingly wanted the other but both of them were afraid to do anything about it because of Grady. Yet after a Miranda pep talk Tess knew what she had to do and it gets hot and heavy from there.

Then of course just as things start getting good everything falls to pieces and I was disappointed in Tess’s decision making here and what she did or didn’t do with Drew. I was on Team Drew for sure and I hated how everything was handled and I felt bad for Drew but he was up for getting everything set straight.

Grady was such a jerk and I feel like there must be more going on that we are not aware of and maybe he will get his own book that overlaps a little with this one to make us understand what he was thinking and why he did what he did.

I was glad that Tess and Drew were able to kind of get everything on the right track but my heart broke for what they went through at the end just as things were going good.

Looking forward to what comes next!- Rebecca

Universal

Tess has had a crush on her brother's best friend since she was a little girl following them around. Now she's grownup and should be over her crush, right? But perhaps not, as now that Drew is finally seeing her as someone other than just his friend's pesky little sister, she wants to explore their attraction, finally be with the guy she's been dreaming of forever.

Drew's seeing Tess in a whole new light. But he knows better than to be thinking of her that way because Bro Code and all that. But Tess is more than just beautiful and he feels more for her than just physical. He isn't sure where to go from here, he just knows how feels, even if he knows her brother will not approve.

Drew and Tess are absolutely the sweetest. Drew's not the stereotypical cocky football player - he's really the opposite, wants to fall in love, is insecure at times, and definitely awkward at expressing himself to Tess. But boy is he swoony and sweet and gorgeous. Tess is funny and shy and bold at turns, and so perfect for and with her Drew.

This has got to be the hardest review I’ve ever written because up until this series Sara Ney was a top instant buy author for me.

I don’t know what happened with this series but it slowly got worse until it ended with this dumpster fire.

The only thing remotely entertaining was the little quips at the header of the chapters & the diary entries. Usually diary entries feel overly childish however, they were the most adult part of this book.

The chemistry was so forced, fake and cringey at best. The first sexual encounter was aggressively uncomfortable and slightly deceiving with the “one bed” trope. There were other sleeping arrangements that could have been made under that roof.

The “Medical information” was so horribly incorrect, unsafe and the sad part is, if the author would have googled as much as the FMC , she could have used this very serious issue as a way to help someone who’s doesn’t have the resources, a small amount of education could have given a reader the “ I see you”. Instead we get a FMC who had endometriosis who never saw a DR to confirm pregnancy or even talk about all the high risks that come with being pregnant with endometriosis. Zero medical presence in this book. Let’s also not forget the very awkward uneducated explanation of a miscarriage. Was she spotting? Period? Who knows? Google and her mom said take a test in a few days to verify. No one once said “Hey chick, you need to see a Dr. Everyone 8 or more weeks should for sure seek medical attention to reduce the risks of infections, internal bleeding, and all the other horrible things that can happen to a woman during/after a miscarriage. But I am also just assuming the miscarriage happened because No one ever confirms, denies or seeks medical attention.

The lack of emotions for almost anything that happened. No excitement for finally getting the guy you’re in love with for YEARS. No real feelings towards being pregnant or not being pregnant. The only emotions shown in this entire book were from the weirdly overly protective brother who really had zero to do with anything except to fill a trope. Not to mention he was a complete idiot and had zero redeeming qualities.

The awkward exchanges with the MMC family. Forcing paternity tests and the awkward brother who’s trying to give advice on situations he has zero knowledge of.
The misrepresentation of the tropes for this book. Brothers best friend = childhood estranged friends. Surprise baby = the surprise is no one knows if there is a baby.

I am not by any means trying to put the education of the world on the authors shoulders. I do think there should be a small sense of pride in educating your readers or at least giving the correct information when writing about such tough subjects.
