I recently grabbed Rule Number Five, the first book in the Rule Breaker Series, off my TBR pile and man am I glad I did! This book hooked me right from the start with its electric chemistry between Jax and Sidney. Their story begins in a bar with an instant connection that sparks a captivating journey of love, growth, and overcoming fears.Sidney's fear of abandonment has led her to set five strict rules: No kissing, one night only, no phone numbers, no falling in love, and definitely no hockey players. But rules are meant to be broken, right?  Jax, who's destined for the NHL, is determined to break through Sidney's walls and make her see there's more to life than rules and restrictions.Their slow-burn romance is a beautiful progression from strangers to friends to lovers. I loved watching Jax fall first and his persistent yet respectful pursuit of Sidney. Their playful bets and Jax's unwavering protection had me swooning. And that line – "It’s not a sacrifice to love you. It’s a privilege" – pure perfection! The book is filled with heartwarming moments and real-life struggles, especially the challenges faced by those who love athletes. It doesn't just gloss over the glamorous side of hockey but dives deep into the sport's impact on relationships and family life.I also couldn't get enough of the side characters, Mia, Alex, and River—the little snippets we got of their dynamic means we are in for some fun and heartache in future books.Rule Number Five is more than just a hockey romance. It's about taking risks, letting go of fears, and realizing that some rules are worth breaking for love.

I absolutely loved reading Rule Number Five: A College Hockey Romance( Rule Breaker Series Book 1)!!!! All about Sidney King a senior poli-sci major & Jax Ryder a kinesiology major who is the star forward on the Husky Hockey team at Windsor University in Canada. Jax meets a gorgeous brunette at the bar after the team won a game. Turns out Sidney has five rules and Jax ticks off everyone of them. Read about Sidney & Jax as they traverse their last semester in college together trying to pass a course the professor insists nobody can. Lots of emotion and plenty of toe curling does occur. This was a fantastic book, that will keep you mesmerized from page one till the very end!!! Be prepared to laugh & cry over the antics!! Definite Read!!!!!

This book was so much to read and yes, even the times, I wanted to yell at Sidney for her rules and for not wanting a relationship with Jax. I can't fault her for that though, she didn't have the best role model growing up. She's strong willed and doesn't let anyone get close. Jax is a fun guy and not used to girls turning him down. He's got the charm and flirt to get anyone he wants. He wants Sidney...she doesn't make it easy on him though. I loved the flirting and the banter. The times he just showed up and inserted himself despite her not wanting him there lol. Jax will do anything to show her how well they are together and how much he wants a future with her. He has to show her that he is nothing like her dad. Oh, and he's determined to break her rules. The author just has a way of bringing you into the story and feeling all the emotions. So many times, my heart broke for Sidney but it also was happy when things worked out. This was an incredible book with characters you will definitely love! Oh and I love when the guy falls first.

Jessa Wilder was another new to me author I discovered for RARE Edinburgh.

The only regret I have, that I didn't discover this book and author earlier. Rule Number Five ticks all the boxes of things I love in good romance.
Give me a playboy star hockey player that falls first, a slow burn friends with benefits, good tension and banter, amazing chemistry combined with a captivating writing style and I'll be putty in the hands of the author.

I'm in freaking love with this book and can't wait to continue the series!

This was super cute and a decent read. The spice level was good and not overwhelming.
Sidney has rules against getting involved, specifically with hockey players. Jax is, of course, a hockey player she can’t seem to stick to her rules about.
The only issues I had with this was the timing, or lack thereof, and the SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!

Third act breakup. It felt slow to start for the first 50% and then went a bit too fast to keep track of, and I hate a third act breakup. I will give it to Wilder though, the reasoning behind this third act breakup was much more believable and therefore more digestible than most, but still avoidable if Sidney had just explained her no hockey players rule and her experience with her dad.

Rule Number Five is a heartfelt and emotional sports romance that beautifully explores themes of hurt, loss, and love. J. Wilder delivers an incredible enemies-to-lovers story with Jax and Sidney, two characters who are impossible not to root for.

Both Jax and Sidney have endured significant losses, shaping the walls they’ve built around their hearts. At the start of their final year of university, they’re anything but friends. However, as the story unfolds, their rivalry shifts into an unexpected friendship—one that soon becomes much more. Their chemistry is undeniable, and watching them slowly break down each other’s defenses is both captivating and deeply emotional.

The third-act breakup is particularly heartbreaking. Sidney’s pain is raw and real, and her decision to walk away from Jax mirrors the hurt she’s carried from her past. He let her down, just like her father had, and she couldn’t let history repeat itself. Their shattered hearts make this moment gut-wrenching, adding to the depth of their journey.

This book had everything I love in a romance—passion, heartbreak, and the slow-burn intensity of two people learning to trust again. I can’t wait to read the other stories in this series. If they are anything like Rule Number Five, I know I won’t be able to put them down. Such a fantastic read!

The only thing I disliked about Sid was her love for strawberry shakes ( can't stand them) but my gosh I want to be her when I grow up. This was an absolute treat... I finished this in one sitting. Couldn't put it down... If you love cute, over the top but totally realistic love stories, this one's for you. You won't regret it. J. Wilder is awesome 👍
