One More Secret

Rate this book
A steamy, dual-timeline romance about a survivor of domestic abuse starting her life over in a small town and the protective ex-Marine determined to save her… .

After being wrongfully imprisoned for the death of her abusive husband, all Jessica Smithson wants is to start a new life where no one knows her true identity. Maple Ridge is the perfect place to hide from the media circus battling to know who really rid her of the man. A question she can’t answer.

The last thing she expects to find in the small idyllic mountain town is the good-looking and very persistent Troy Carson. From the moment he sees her, the ex-Marine is determined to help Jess with her anxiety attacks and to get to know her better. He’s determined to help her renovate the old house she bought—a house with secrets hidden behind the walls.

Heat simmers and grows between the pair, but Jess can’t risk getting too close to Troy. Can’t risk her own secrets being revealed.

So much is at stake if the truth gets out.

For fans of Rebecca Yarros's THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED comes a toe-curling, dual-timeline romance that bridges the gap between past and present, love and loss, and heartbreak and healing.

ONE MORE SECRET is the first book in the HIDDEN SECRETS TRILOGY. The books in the trilogy must be read in order. You don't need to read One More Chance (book 1 of the Carson Brothers series) to read the trilogy.

Okay, first of all, I had no idea this wasn’t a standalone, so give me a minute while I pick my jaw up off the floor after that shocking, unexpected cliffhanger. I’m reading along, falling in love with all these characters, wondering whose story will be next with the Carson brothers, and then BAM! Troy's romance with Jessica Smithson is only beginning, and I need the next installment now!

Jessica has just been released from prison for a crime she didn’t commit and has settled in small-town Maple Ridge, OR. While she'd rather keep to herself, or hide from everything, she's befriended by Troy and is quickly welcomed and included by him and his group of friends. When it becomes clear to Troy, and ex Marine in a family of Marines, that Jess is suffering from PTSD, he does what he can to help. He wants nothing more than for Jess to open up to him and trust him, but her walls are sky high and impenetrable.

Oh my heart y'all, this is exactly the kind of story I love in my romance reading! It's so freakin' heartfelt and emotional, and I felt every bit of Jess's struggle and fear and uncertainty. And I empathized so much with Troy, a natural hero and protector with a heart of gold. He's so gentle and careful with Jess, and she's so wrapped up in the pain from her past that she has difficulty seeing beyond that to the wonderful man patiently waiting right in front of her.

Maybe the reason for the title is because it's one more secret on top of a whole pile of secrets. And wow, is there a lot to be revealed. Between Jess's past that will surely come to light, her reasons for constantly looking over her shoulder to be revealed, and the completion of the journals from a young woman who was a spy during WWII, I can’t wait to find out what happens next! Heartfelt, evocative, mesmerizing, and riveting, you absolutely won’t want to miss this masterful romantic suspense!

One More Secret was a small town romance that was filled with new beginnings, struggle and hope.  While this is the second book in the Carson Brothers series, you can easily start with this book just like I did!  After finishing this I bought One More Chance, so I'm excited to go back and read one of the other brother's story!  One More Secret brimmed with heart, second chances, and was an emotionally gritty and rugged read.
Savannah Townsend was gorgeous. Unforgettable. The two words my husband called me the first time we met.
Jessica Smithson is the one with the scars on her face. The scars the media never found out about.
I’m safe now. They’ll never find me.

With Jessica leaving prison, this story started off with a bang.  She had served 5 of her 25 year sentence, since she had been convicted of killing her abusive ex-husband.  The glimpses we got of her thinking about the past was beyond heartbreaking and more cruel and frightful than I ever could have imagined.  Upon release, she moved to a quiet little town to start her new life. Somewhere that no one would know her, hopefully. The media had swarmed around her story, and she just wanted to disappear. As Jessica slowly started to put roots down, I was so proud of her.  She tried to work, while avoiding triggers, and bought a house.  But within that house, she found a box filled with items and journals.  The journals told the story of Angelique D'Aboville who was a SOE agent in France during World War II.  As Jessica and Angelique's stories unraveled, I saw so many similarities between the two of them.  And there came a point where I was just as invested in Angelique's life and desperately didn't want to leave my time with her.  I had to know what happened next.
He puts his hand gently on my arm. My muscles instinctively tighten under his touch. He’s not my dead husband. He’s not my dead husband. He’s not my dead husband.

Jessica, previously Savannah Townsend, had so many insecurities because of how she was physically and emotionally damaged. Not only from her ex-husband, but also from her time in a maximum-security penitentiary. So each time she took the tiniest step forward, I was so nervous for her.  That she would have another PTSD episode.  That someone would figure out who she was.  That her whole world would get blown up all over again. So I got why she was terrified of everything. I understood why she was so challenging for others to get to know her. And why her walls were higher than almost anyone I have read about. I wanted to connect with her, but it was challenging. Her past wasn't her fault. Yet it was embedded into every single aspect and moment of her life. Thankfully Troy stepped into her life, and was the hugest of help.
But the effect Troy has on me makes me wonder if I was wrong. Maybe I’m not quite as broken as I believed. Not all my bits were smashed into a million tiny pieces and discarded.
And that’s… that’s kind of a relief. Not that I’m in any rush for that. Not yet.

Troy was someone that was so easy to fall in love with.  He was kind, patient and had the most wonderful heart.  He noticed signs of Jessica suffering from PTSD, and as someone who lost their friend to the battle of it, he wasn't going to walk away from her.  He tried his best and did everything he could to help her with it.  It was beyond amazing the lengths he went to, to help Jessica mentally.  And all the while, he tried to be just her friend.  Even though he was attracted to her.   Yet Troy definitely took some routes that make me nervous for him. And will probably bite him down the road. So I'm thinking all of my happy thoughts for him!
But even after what we just did, I don’t feel any closer to her. There’s still the wall between us.
And I’m not sure how I feel about that.

We also got the story from Troy's POV, and he had an uphill battle trying to get to know Jessica.  This story took place over several months and I loved watching an acquaintance slowly start to turn into a friendship between them.  And as more time passed, that friendship started to slowly blossom to more. The length that it took to get there felt realistic to me. But even when Troy and Jessica pushed the limit of their friendship, and that was steamy!, Troy still didn't feel like he completely knew her.  And I understood his sentiment.  I felt the same way in regards to being able to connect with her.  It took me till about 4/5ths of the way into the story till I made that connection with her.  And I'm so grateful I did!
I can’t see him right now as the enemy. He’s just a man who looks as though his own world is caving in on him in a way I hope to never understand.

This book wove two stories together.  One of Jessica in the present, and another from the journals that Jessica found about Angelique the SOE agent during World War II.  The lengths Angelique would go and risk her life left me terrified. There were moments that were so terrifying that it felt like if she took a breath too big, she could die. Nowhere felt safe and I questioned all of those around her. So by our 4th chapter with her, I was obsessed.  I officially didn't want to leave the past and had to know what happened next in her story.  Angelique was so easy to like and connect with. As we got to know those around her, I became obsessed with Schmidt.  Yet he was a part of everything she hated and was working against, but I kept holding out hope that there was more to him the meets the eye.  I kept my fingers crossed that he would be one of the good guys!  So where their story ended left me so excited for that next book!  And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that sparks start to fly and that they can be more.  The romantic in me just can't help but wish for that haha.
“Please be okay. Please be okay. Please be okay.” My voice is a shaky whisper, a prayer, a plea.

Suspense wove its way into the end of these two stories, and one scene even made me cry.  And that ending?!  It was a brutal cliffhanger for both Jessica and Angelique!  We're left mid scene in perilous situations for both of them and I need that next book now please! If you're looking for a memorable journey that intertwines the past and the present, definitely pick this one up! It brimmed with feelings that were both raw and real. And I'm looking forward to continuing this series!

PS I adored Butterscotch and Bailey! They were the cutest!

PPS There was a festival scene that had me screaming out loud because I was so happy with something Troy did haha!

This is a new emotional read by Stina Lindenblatt. Jessica moves to a new town after being released from Prison for a crime she didn't commit. Troy is an ex-marine who really feels protective of Jessica. Jessica suffers from PTSD after prison and having an abusive husband from her past. I had a hard time connecting with Jessica. She always seemed to struggle with honesty and always thinking the worst of everyone. I understand why, but it was difficult to get into her story.

5 Star review of One More Secret (Hidden Secrets #1 :Carson Brothers) by Stina Lindenblatt
I was excited when I heard about this trilogy. Having read and enjoyed several books by Ms. Lindenblatt I could not wait to read One More Secret. Jessica Smithson is looking to start her life over after being wrongfully imprisoned for the death of her abusive husband and she has decided that Maple Ridge is the place.

The last thing she wants or needs is ex-Marine Troy Carson, a man who is determined to be there for her, even when she pushes him away. However these two have a connection that is hard to ignore.

But what happens when Jessica’s identity is revealed? When secrets of the past come to light? Will it bring them together or rip them apart? One click and find out.

‘I need to prove that under the broken shell of the woman my husband and the prison system left behind, I am the same girl I was before my life took a wrong turn. A girl with dreams and goals and stars in her eyes.’

Stina Lindenblatt is an author who has been on our reading radar for quite some time, and we decided it was about time we dove into one of her books. So, One More Secret was our first read, and a good place to start, with this being the first book in a trilogy that has left us wanting more.

‘I am falling for Jess. Falling under a spell I don’t think she even knows she’s casting.’

We didn’t know what to expect from this story as we love to go in blind, so the dual storyline/timeline was a complete (and pleasant) surprise. The story switches from present day between Troy and Jessica, and a story set in Nazi occupied France during WW11. In 1943, about a woman named Angelique.

Now, as much as the present-day story of Jessica Smithson and her traumatic and harrowing past initially drew us in, it was Angelique’s story told through some hidden journals that had us entirely captivated and flicking the pages. Angelique’s story was fascinating, intriguing, and suspenseful, we enjoyed it so much, we found ourselves somewhat rushing through the present-day story, needing to find out how Angelique’s story was unfolding.

We cannot wait for the next book to find out how the stories are linked, and what is about to unfold from a good introduction to this ‘new to us’ author.

I was completely captivated from the first page, and couldn't put the book down until I finished.
"Jessica" has been released from prison, after being wrongfully incarcerated for the killing of her abusive husband. Scared, alone, and desperate to escape the media frenzy her release sparks, a friend finds her a house to rent in a small town. Throughout the course of the book Jess's story is revealed and the challenges she faces are explored and worked on. Jess slowly starts to make friends and find herself, but something is always holding her back from truly letting go of her past. What she can't figure out is if it is just the memories, or is someone out to get her?
Loved the characters, flaws and all. The plot is amazing, definitely not your typical abused wife finds a new life story. There are sub plots that enhance the story, and somehow they all flow together seamlessly. As the author points out this is Part 1, so be ready for a MAJOR cliffhanger at the end. Cannot wait for Book 2.
This is a must read for anyone looking for an excited read with action, mystery, romance, friendship, and self discovery.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This 5 star story had my undivided attention throughout the entire story.

Jessica starts new in a small town. She just wants to forget her past and start over, but past trauma makes it difficult for her to. Troy sees clearly Jessica’s trauma and will help her heal.

There are 2 stories within this book. There’s the present and other characters that Jessica is reading from a journal from the WWII. The present story is addictive and I feel so much for Jessica. Not in the personal way. But the way the author has developed her character. It’s a story about PTSD and trying to overcome that. The part from WWII is a little difficult for me to follow because I do not read or comprehend the history of that era. But the present overshadows that small part. Since it’s a trilogy I will learn the why’s of it.

Beautifully written with a seamless plot. Bottomline this is a must read.

This is NOT a standalone. It’s the first of 3 books. Told in a dual POV. I strongly recommend this story

Amazingly written, the author is very talented and iMm surprised the written isn’t highlighted elsewhere. The story itself was pretty typical and fair warning to all readers - this ends on a cliff hanger! Overall, good read and something I’d recommend to others as long as you aren’t an ending driven reader. Now I have to read the next book!

When I started this book, I thought it was a standalone, but not at all. What to say about this book?

There are so many things to say and only positives. I liked everything from A to Z.

This book is just perfect, both the characters and the story itself.

This novel is touching, because it touches on a sensitive subject and the author manages to exploit it brilliantly.

Jess is really a beautiful character and all her emotions make her authentic. While Troy is the ultimate alpha male.

I really liked that the romance didn't happen in the snap of a finger, but that it happened very slowly.

I hope to learn more about the other characters, like Zara, Violet, Garret and Kellan.

In any case, I can't wait to read the sequel, because I feel that the next volume has some surprises in store for us.

The story of Jessica touches my heart. In hiding, Jessica wants to start all over again after being wrongfully convicted. All her insecurities, of her marriage, betrayal in her youth and trust issues with the authorities unfold step by step in the book. Slowly Jessica expanding her circle of friends. You will recognize characters from her other books if you read Ms. Lindenblatt before. This is a bonus, but for me a bit confusing as where to place this book between the other ones I read so far.

Jessica also starts to trust a persistent guy who recognizes her symptoms of PTSD and who wants to help her heal. Troy is a likable character that hopefully grows more in the next two books. The relationship develops in a good pace

The second storyline is intriguing as well. It is set in WW II and seems to be researched well.

The writing style of Lindenblatt is pretty intense. The present-day story as well as the historical storyline ends in cliffhangers, as this is book one in a trilogy. The cliffhanger of the present-day story is not very original, though. I appreciated the explanations of the author at the beginning in the Author's notes, and the Acknowledgements at the end of the book. And the writing of the author has matured significantly compared to the earlier books I read. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book 2 which is expected early 2024.

This is my honest review in exchange for an ARC of the e-book.

Jessica's been exonerated for her abusive ex's murder, and is finally seeing the light of day after being in prison for 5 years. She's starting over in a small town in Oregon, and is trying to get away from anyone who used to know her or would recognize her. Understandably, she's distrusting and suffers from PTSD. But when she meets Troy, he recognizes her symptoms and just wants to help. If he can get past her walls, they can become friends, and even more if Troy has his way.

Troy may be the type who likes to rescue people, as Jessica accuses him of when they first meet, but it's not a bad thing. He really truly just wants to help ease some of the fear and pain he sees in her eyes, and knows he has to tread very lightly so as not to spook her. If she'll just let him in a little, they could have something beautiful.

OK, to start - just a cliffhanger warning. Yep, the dreaded cliffie, and it's more than a doozy! But once I got past my serious dismay at this, I was able to appreciate this beginning part of their story for what it is - an emotional study of one woman's starting over, on a very tentative path to healing. I felt so for Jessica and all she had been through, is still going through. Thank God she chose this small town to start over, because she was welcomed very warmly by Troy and his whole crew. Plus, there's an added, very intriguing, historical spy story that I'm just as anxiously waiting for the next episode as I am for Jessica and Troy's.

Warning to all readers this book is very addictive.!!!
One More Secret is book 1 in a trilogy so hello Cliffhanger!!!..Which has just made me NEED the next book ASAP...
I Was totally and utterly consumed by this story,it had me intrigued from the very beginning as we are introduced to Jessica...which is not even her real name.
She is escaping from her old life and the prison she has lived in for the past 5 years..trying to make a fresh start in a new town were nobody will know her or recognise her.
An abusive husband and a crime she never committed has left Jess scarred on the inside and on the outside, suffering from PTSD which she denies and won't recognise.
Troy Carson ex Marine all round good guy,Hot as hell and a guy who does anything to help PTSD suffers get their lives back,Usually ex military people. He is also building a safe place for ex vets to go and spend time in the outdoors to help them heal.
Plus he has guilt over his friend who died because he didn't treat his PTSD and perished because of it.
When he sees a woman he hasn't seen before at the lake,he recognises someone who is suffering from PTSD and tries talking to her.But all she in interested in is his support dog Butterscotch and doesn't engage with him much.
Anyway Jess purchases a house that Troy wanted to flip its an old house and the owner was an old woman who passed away Iris.
Jess finds old journals of Iris's and they tell of a story in wartime France in 1943..Angeliques journals are the second story within this book.
So you get 2 solidly riveting stories in one book.
Jessica smithson's story to stay as inconspicuous as much as she can and Angeliques story on how she is collaborating with THE FIRM to win the war against Hitler.
Well Jess just can't stay hidden in a small town that just wants to be her friend, and Troy even becomes one of those friends and someone who helps renovate her new home.
But Troy is attracted to Jess and would love more than friendship..But Jess feels so broken she can't give him what he wants...She is too busy hiding her past and keeping secrets.
I LOVED Troy OMG he is like the perfect man,he was so caring and patient with Jess,he goes above and beyond to help her in any way possible. But she still didn't trust him or anyone Jess always thought there would be consequences to any of her actions.
I felt so much heartbreak for Jess and what she had been through,I wanted her to be with Troy so bad and her struggles made me cry or tear up more than once.I cannot wait to find out her story properly,we only get snippets of the story.
Then there are the journals and Angeliques journey in world war 2 and how she helps the resistance to take down the Germans. It is so enticing and on the edge stuff. My interest both peaked for both of the stories that playout throughout this book, and I could not get enough.
Stina Lindenblatt has really outdone herself on this story so far,her writing is perfection and completely captivating.I have read numerous books by Stina and loved them, but there is something about this story that was something special...even her writing to me seemed different.
I absolutley loved reading One More Secret and thoroughly enjoyed myself as the the story began to unravel I became more and more fascinated...especially with that cliffhanger I don't know if to be angry with Stina or applaud her for keeping me on my toes and shocking me.
This is a Brillant story and I cannot wait for the next book.
Excellent read.
5 Stars.

One More Secret by Stina Lindenblatt, book one in the Hidden Secrets:Carson Brothers trilogy, is a very emotional, sizzling, dual-timeline romance about a survivor of domestic abuse starting her life over in a small town and the protective ex-Marine determined to save her. Jessica Smithson has just been released from prison for a crime she didn’t commit and has settled in small-town Maple Ridge, Oregon. Although she would rather keep to herself, or hide from everything and everyone, she's befriended by ex-Marine Troy Carson. Troy is determined to be there for Jess, even when she pushes him away. These two have a real connection that is hard to ignore. Jess is soon welcomed and included by Troy and his group of friends. When it becomes clear to Troy that Jess is suffering from PTSD, he does what he can to help her. He wants nothing more than for Jess to open up to him and trust him, but her walls are sky high and impenetrable. Troy is a natural hero and protector with a heart of gold. He's amazingly gentle and careful with Jess, while she's wrapped up in the pain from her past; having difficulty seeing beyond her past to the wonderful man patiently waiting right in front of her. While she is cleaning out rooms and closets Jess finds a secret room behind the bookshelf and she finds journals from the owner; who, it turns out, was a spy during WWII.

Though Jess slowly starts to make friends and find herself, there is something that seems to always be holding her back from truly letting go of her past. What she can't figure out is if it is just the memories, or is someone out to get her? Between Jess's past that will surely come to light, her reasons for constantly looking over her shoulder to be revealed, and the completion of the journals from a young woman who, I can’t wait to find out what happens next after that major cliffhanger at the end. Heartfelt, emotional, compelling, and fascinating, you definitely do not want to miss this masterful romantic suspense. I highly recommend One More Secret to other readers and am impatiently waiting for part two.

After being wrongfully convicted of killing her husband, Jessica Smithson has fled to the small town of Maple Ridge for a new start where no one will recognize her. She’s lost so much, including years in an abusive marriage, time in jail for a wrongful conviction, and custody of her young daughter. Now she has a chance to begin again, if only she can learn to trust in herself and others, since she’s been abused and abandoned by everyone who was supposed to love her, except for her grandparents.

From the moment Troy Carson comes across Jessica, he knows she is a soul who needs saving. Having just lost a friend to suicide from PTSD, he sees so many of the same signs in Jessica and wants to be the person she can rely on. He’s patient and persistent. And, while he wants more than friendship, he’s willing to give Jess all the time she needs. But, can Jess ever trust Troy with all of the secrets she holds? And, if she didn’t kill her abusive ex, who did and why?

One More Secret was simply captivating! I was immediately all in with Jess as she started her new life. I felt every anxiety attack she faced and her fear to trust or believe in anyone. I loved her fire and spirit to try to move forward when all life had ever done was try to push her down. Her trauma and PTSD is heartbreaking, and I wanted so badly for anything good to come to her.

Troy is unbelievably amazing. Seriously, no one can be this good to be true, but he is! He’s kind and patient and willing to be friends but also wanting more. He’s there to support Jess in any and every way she needs him to without asking for anything in return. He’s totally willing to work to gain her trust.

This book is a slow burn. There are so many secrets . . .and not just with Jess! The house she just bought and is renovating has secrets too, and this story within a story is just as spellbinding! It ends on a cliffhanger and readers are left wondering if it's coincidence or if the real killer has found Jess . . .and why. I really cannot wait to continue on with this series, because it is giving me all the feels! 5 stars!

Jessica Smithson is running from her past, knowing there is someone out there that may still be looking for her. She refuses to let anyone in to know about her past and doesn't want any hand outs from people she doesn't know.

Troy Carson is that good guy in town that most single women want. He got out of a bad relationship 2 years ago but hasn't given up on love. He loves helping people out and will go that extra distance when he can.

When Troy helps out Jessica when she moves to Maple Ridge, Oregon the two gradually become friends. But will Jessica trust Troy enough to let him in to what she's running from?

So this was a good book but split into almost two parts of the book. Part of the story was about Troy and Jessica and the other about Angelique.

I did enjoy the story with Jessica and Troy but Jessica seemed to go a long with Troy quite easily even though she wanted to be independent and not really rely on someone else. I found Jessica strong for wanting to put her life back together but she was really afraid of other people. I was shocked at how fast she went with Robyn given everything else going on.

Troy was a good guy but also a little manipulative even if he was doing it for the right reasons. He was controlling things in Jessica's life not knowing how damaging that could be for her in the long run given her past. He wasn't giving her a choice in her life and I'll be interested to see how it all plays out.

Parts of this book really reminded me of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I felt as though I read this before because of the similarities. This for me was kind of a downer as I know the author probably didn't intend this to happen but there were just too many similarities which decreased my rating of the book.

I wasn't surprised how things started heating up between Jessica and Troy but there are so many secrets between the two of them that you know things are not going to go well soon.

The book ends on a huge cliffhanger so looking forward to what is coming next. 3.5 stars- Rebecca

Jessica Smithson has just moved to Maple Ridge Oregon after being released from prison to murdering her husband. Seeking a new start with a new identity, Jessica moves into a fixer-upper that she then decides to purchase, making her home in Maple Ridge. She suffers from PTSD after all the ugly things that happened to her in prison and what led up to her conviction.

Troy Carson has some demons of his own. His best friend was a victim of PTSD's relentless pain, and he's doing all he can to assist those with the disorder, especially since it impacts many service men and women. He's a contractor in Maple Ridge who is intrigued by Jessica when he first sees her.

Troy befriends Jessica, trying to help with her PTSD with adorable emotional support dogs. They are good for each other and I liked the slow progression with their feelings. They also have a very nice cast of supporting characters looking out for them. I liked these characters very much. They are flawed and that made them interesting.

There is a second timeline being told in this story as well. Jessica's new place needs cleaning out and she discovers journals from a woman involved in World War II in Nazi occupied France. I'm looking forward to finding out how this all fits in with Troy and Jessica's story.

This is the first in a trilogy with these characters, and is also part of the Carson Brothers series. Readers should be aware that the book ends in a cliffhanger, but it's a good one and I'm eager for the next book in the series. This book grabbed me right from the beginning and I just had to know Jessica's story.

Looking forward to more of Jessica and Troy's story in the future. A nice mix of contemporary and historical romance that is well researched. The writing is also very engaging and kept me reading. Overall, a great start to this trilogy.

This is book one in The Hidden Secrets Trilogy : The Carson Brother’s series and it is Jessica and Troy’s story. Jessica was in prison for a crime that she didn’t commit and now released she decided to go and live in the small town of Maple Ridge where nobody will know her or her past and because of what she had been through she keeps to herself and had built walls so high around her that it would take a very special person to break them down which seems impossible because she keeps her distance as much as she can. Troy is from a family of marines and now that he is out he is living in Maple Ridge and because he has a caring nature and a protector as soon as he meets Jessica he definitely knows the signs of anxiety and PTSD and he really wants to help her even though it will not be easy but Troy is a patient man and also kind and caring and knows how to go slow so that he doesn’t cause anymore pain to Jessica so he is determined to put in the time and hopefully and eventually break down her walls and help her heal from what ever it is that she had been through and made her so afraid. Wow this book takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions that will have you in tears and feelings all the pain that Jessica is still feeling as if you are there living through it with her and I loved how amazing Troy was and he had a heart of gold and so patient and you can feel there connection that just gets stronger the more time that they spend together and just when you think everything is going well you get an explosive cliffhanger that will have you needing the next book asap to see what would happen next. I definitely recommend you read this book but just remember that it is not a standalone book and you will need to read these books in order.

One More Secret by @stinalindenblatt

Review:

Jessica Smithson has survived been abused by her Chief of Police Husband then was accused of his murder and sent to prison. After she was released she decided to move to small town Maple Ridge under a new identity. Jessica meets Troy an ex-marine who is determined to help Jessica overcome her traumatic past. Little by little she is improving but she has a long way to go even though she is keeping herself guarded. Jessica wants to heal from her past..

My Thoughts:

OMG! I cant believe I was left with cliffhanger. I loved this story so much. Jessica has been through so much. She is a strong person for not giving up her life. She has literally been through hell and back. I admire her very much. I am happy for her. I am rooting for her to win. Now, Troy is a wonderful good and protective towards his friends and family. He has been in the marine which he seen and done things he never would mention to another living soul. After, losing his best friend to suicide from dealing with PTSD alone. Troy meets Jessica and he is determined not to make the same mistake when he witnessing her PTSD symptoms. He does every thing in his power to help a stranger. Jessica decides to renovate the old house she now owns but not without her new friend Troy in toe lol. They start developing feelings for each other but Jessica is scared and afraid of anything serious. I think she is starting to coming into her own, but she needs time. I am glad Troy is respecting her decision on the pace of their relationship. I love Jessica and Troy together. Ugh! Why Stina? Why Stina? I just needed two more chapters because I need to know what happened. I can't wait for the next book in the series comes out.

I read the description for this story and was intrigued but I have to say, it was so much more than I ever imagined. Jessica was imprisoned for a crime she didn't commit, and that really did a number on her of course, but the circumstances before that prison stint were super bad as well. She's decided she needs to start over in the small town of Maple Ridge so she can stay on the downlow from the circus having to do with her previous life. Troy is our hero who is all that and a bag of chips, and I couldn't have loved him more if I tried hard as he was perfect. The moment he comes face to face with Jessica, he knows that she's suffering from PTSD, and while he normally helps veterans with that being a veteran himself, he decides he's going to help our girl here. Jessica has very understandable trust issues, so she literally won't trust anyone, even Troy, but thankfully, he knows how to go at her pace. I felt so much for Jessica's struggle throughout this story so I stayed on the verge of tears the whole way through. However, even when Jessica starts to see Troy differently, she's holding on to a lot of secrets that make me extremely anxious because secrets tend to come out. On top of this situation, Jessica buys a house that houses a journal of a young woman spy during WWII so I was in my happy place of twists coming in all over the place. It all leads to a mouth dropping cliffhanger that has me dying inside because now I have to wait for more so yeah, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was my first time reading something by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. Such a heartfelt story that will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Make sure you have a tissue box handy! Jessica was wrongfully accused of killing her abusive husband and served time in prison and has now been released. All she wants is to start fresh in a new town, so she moves to Maple Ridge, where no one knows her or anything about her past. She prefers to stay low and keep to herself, but Troy befriends her and includes her in his circle of friends. Troy is an ex-Marine, and recognizes Jessica's anxiety as PTSD and is determined to help her. He is gentle with her and tries to get Jessica to open up to him. She has built up walls that are iron hard, but Troy is determined to tear them down and help her get through her pain.
I was completely pulled into the story from the very start and engaged till the last page. The author did an amazing job of bringing the scenes and characters to life. The story is so emotional it will really pull at your heartstrings. The plot was well-written with a smooth storyline, and the characters were simply amazing. Such a beautifully written story I just could not put down!
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Jessica and Troy. The angsty romance focuses on Jessica and her trauma from both a past abusive relationship and a jail stint for murder. We spend a lot more time in her mind than in Troy’s. He is apparently an all-around good guy, a retired SEAL, very protective, with a renovation business in this small town. His focus is on other service people and their experiences of PTSD. Jessica is gorgeous, but clearly traumatised and he is drawn to her. There is a lot (a LOT!) going on here - a secondary story that Jessica finds hidden in the house she buys, her journey through trauma, who killed her ex, is she safe in her new home, can she recover, and so on…

There’s light as well though, with her charming home renovation, a gorgeous small town, friendly side characters, several gorgeous dogs and obvious chemistry with Troy, but is she too damaged for him, and is she just someone for him to save?

This is a cliffhanger, not a standalone. The three book set gives plenty of time and space to set out all the characters and challenges - but we will have to wait for the next two to see if it all pans out.

Recommended.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the ARC.

(This review is based off of an uncorrected e-galley of this novel)

First off.......that cliffhanger. I nearly threw my kindle at the wall because of it. I don't know if it will be that dramatic in the final version, but it's definitely on the level of season finale of your favorite show when you don't know if it's getting another season.

I liked the structure of the novel, even if some of the relationships have not been made clear yet. I really want to know how Iris is related to this story other than being the former owner of Jessica's house. I have lots of questions that I need answers to, so I can't wait for the next two novels in this trilogy.

If you've read any of my other reviews about timelines of DV survivors, you know that I'm always complaining about how it's moving too quickly. I appreciated that the author included in the notes at the beginning that she took creative liberties to keep the story interesting aka she addressed the elephant in the room and said that Jessica's journey is basically at warp speed. Overall, I liked the way mental health and PTSD were addressed.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for an e-arc of this novel

5 Emotionally Beautiful Stars!!

This is my first book by Ms. Lindenblatt and what an amazing reading experience I had while reading Jessica and Troy’s second chance love story. This woman has faced some of the most unbearable and painful events and all she wants is to start over in a small town where no one knows who she is or what happened in her past. Maple Ridge seems like this perfect place.

What she didn’t expect is a Vet, Troy Carson, that not only has his own demons, but one look at Jess and he’s going to do everything in his power to heal this woman that quickly captured his heart. Adding to the beauty of this story is the dual timeline that we experience thanks to the secrets exposed and partially revealed in items found in the fixer-upper Jess is staying in… for me, this added a dimension I wasn’t expecting but loved so very much.

This book is a journey and not a short trip and we’re left with a cliffhanger that took me by complete surprise… I’m so looking forward to seeing where Jess and Troy’s journey takes them in One More Betrayal!

Jessica and Troy are the main characters in this beginning of the Carson Brothers book series and I have to say not only is this book heartbreaking but it also gives you an open look for what a character goes through when they have been through something very traumatizing and have PTSD because of it but is still trying to start over and build a life. Every great story about a second chance is a good love story as well and that is where our character Troy comes into play in this book. He is immediately smitten with Jessica when he meets her and is ready for his second chance at love, but is Jessica able to let go of the past and give a new love a chance to heal those wounds and show her what the healthy love is supposed to be and is she able to open up to him and let him be there for her as she continues to be a new life? When he does learn of her past where does Troy go does he stay there or leave her? And let’s not forget the author leaves this book on a cliffhanger so if your like me you will be waiting for the next one to come out.

One More Secret is Book one in the Hidden Secrets ; Carson Brothers Trilogy and this is Jessica Smithson and ex-Marine Troy Carson’s emotional journey. If this book is anything to go by Ms Lindenblatt will have a hit trilogy on her hands.
Jessica is looking for a fresh start after being wrongfully imprisoned for the death of her abusive husband. She has arrived in Maple Ridge with a new name and a new start so the last thing she needs is a relationship or even a friendship with Troy. Problem is this man is everywhere she looks and as much as she pushes him away he pushes just as hard to be part of her life…..
Secrets are being kept and we all know that’s a recipe for disaster so what happens when Jessica’s past is revealed. Oh and be warned this book ends on a massive cliffhanger.
I loved everything about this book and I’m excited for what’s to come next from the Carson brothers and Maple Ridge.
