Center Ice (Boston Rebels Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 9,261 ratings

I’ve always been a wild card – the first to start a fight on the ice, and the life of the party off it – but appearances can be deceiving.

Being traded to the Boston Rebels could not have come at a better time. With serious family obligations to fulfill and a contract renewal with a new hockey team on the line, I have no time for anything else. I return to Boston knowing I need to buckle down and focus on what really matters.

But the first night I’m back in town, I come face to face with Audrey, my college calculus tutor. We had a brief fling right before I was drafted into the NHL. Now, her five year old son is standing by her side, and I don’t need a tutor to do that kind of math.

Audrey insists she doesn’t want me involved in Graham’s life unless I can commit to being a dad. With everything else going on, this is the worst possible timing.

But every minute I spend with Graham and Audrey feels exactly right, and I’m left questioning everything I thought I wanted.

Because now my goals are shifting, and getting what I really want might come at the expense of the game I’ve given my entire life to.

Julia Connors is an Amazon Top 20 bestselling author of spicy sports romances. She grew up on the warm and sunny West Coast, but her first decision as an adult was to trade her flip-flops for snow boots and move to Boston. She’s been enjoying everything that New England has to offer for over two decades, and now that she’s acclimated to the snowy winters and finally found all the places to get good sushi and tacos, she has zero regrets. You can usually find her in front of her computer, but when she stops writing she’s most likely to be found outdoors, preferably with a pair of skis or snowshoes strapped to her feet in winter, or on a paddleboard in the summer.

Second Chance Romance… Say Less
5 out of 5 stars
Second Chance Romance… Say Less
Center Ice by Julia Connors is an amazing hockey romance book. It has tropes like second chance romance and semi reverse grumpy/sunshine. Additionally, the FMC is a single mom and the MMC is a famous hockey player (who is obviously the baby daddy… which we love 🤭).I loved this book for several reasons, not only do we see Drew grovel to Audrey, but in a way he also “grovels” to build a relationship with his child. We see our MMC start to second guess everything he thought he stood for prior to coming back into Audrey’s life, and having Graham (their child) in the picture now too, we see some serious character growth from Drew (and it’s swoon worthy 😮‍💨).Overall, Julia Connor’s is able to capture an amazing second-chance hockey romance. This trope is unique for hockey romances (at least that I have read) and it was done really well. This book definitely deserves 5/5 stars and I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a second chance with a happy ending 🏒💙 (Review Written by Audrey… Susan is my mom lol)

Drew and Audrey met in college when he needed a calculus tutor. The two grew close over the semester and fell into bed for one glorious night once he aced his final. After he got drafted by the NHL they parted ways without a word until fate brings him back to Boston. He gets traded to their very own home team and it turns out she’s still living in the area and a mutual friend of the team. When he shows up at his agents party and locks eyes with the beautiful girl from college, the last thing he’s expecting is for her to RUN.

Audrey needs to escape fast, but it’s too late. The moment Drew locks eyes with the beautiful boy that calls her mommy, she knows the jig is up. Luckily his confusion gives her just enough time to grab her son and leave. Drew didn’t want them all those years ago, and she sure as heck isn’t going to give him another chance to leave them behind.

This story was so fun and unfolded so differently from what I was expecting. Despite his flaws, Drew is a self aware king. I respected that he was able to admit how much he messed up all those years ago, and the way he was willing to prove how much he’s changed.

If you enjoy a story about a single super mama this one is for you. She’s headstrong and independent, and also doing an incredible job in her career. I loved that having a child didn’t stop her from pursuing her own dreams. Too often we get stories about struggling single moms, where the fancy billionaire sports star swoops in to rescue them. However in this one, Audrey doesn’t need him and that made it all the more compelling. Drew has to put in work to fit into their lives and I was eating up all the nice little gestures.

This was my first read from this author and it was super easy to dive right into. Although I could tell this was set up as spin off series, I was easily able to jump into the story with no confusion. It was fast paced, and sweet focusing mostly on Audrey and Drew with little glimpses of their son. I loved all these characters immediately, and cannot wait to go back to discover the stories I missed.

I’m very excited that Audrey’s sister’s book is up next. There was plenty of tension hinted through the book, and I’m so ready to see where her journey leads

Such a heartfelt read. Drew, the NHL bad boy trying to turn his life around, comes back to Boston and unexpectedly crosses paths with Audrey, his college tutor—and her five-year-old son, Graham. It doesn’t take Drew long to realize Graham is his, making him a dad. Watching him step up while falling for Audrey was swoony.

If you know anything about me, I love the "he takes care of her" mini trope...and it is done MANY times in this book.

The story flowed so well, and felt genuinely sweet and real. The connection between Drew and Audrey gave me heart flutters, but it’s the way he bonds with Graham that truly melted me.

If you are looking for a story about second chances, family, and figuring out what really matters that just so happens to include hockey...look no further.

My rating always starts at 5 stars, but depending on the pacing and plot they’ll end up being deducted. The fact that I hardly felt the plot, or an actual family connection brought those stars down. I also don’t really feel like there was enough of a connection between Audrey and Drew but the biggest offense to me was that Graham didn’t even feel like part of the story. It felt like most of the focus was between the couple, which did not sit right with me. Overall the drama was low level enough and I flew through the story. But this book doesn’t have me in much of a hurry to read the next one in the series.

Drew is a pro NHL player and Audrey is his math tutor from college. They have spent 6 years apart from each other after he was recruited to the league. But surprise surprise. Audrey had a secret she needed to tell him and wasn’t able to do so. So when they come across each other and he meets her son, Graham, his whole world tilts on its axis but in the best way possible. This book is so well written, super sweet and has some moments of anguish and sadness as well. But it has a beautiful HEA

This was so good! In college Audrey got pregnant after having a brief fling, now her little boy is in Kindergarten and the father is back in town playing professional hockey for the local team. He quickly does the math, and knows that this is his child.

While we learn why Drew didn’t step up in the first place, he is ready to be there now. He is there for Graham, and he wants to be there for Andrey too. The two have amazing chemistry, and it’s much more than just in the bedroom (although that is absolutely fire!).

I loved the way this story unfolded, as it was not the same sports romance/surprise baby approach. I loved the authors style, and I cannot wait to read more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hockey, Second Chances, and a Secret Son? This One's a Total Page-Turner!

Center Ice by Julia Connors is everything you want in a sports romance! We’ve got Drew, a hotshot hockey player with a bad boy past, and Audrey, his no-nonsense former college tutor. Oh, and did I mention the secret son? Yep, Drew’s life is about to take a major turn when he finds out he’s a dad!

The chemistry between Drew and Audrey is electric. Their banter, the unresolved tension, and watching them navigate their way through their complicated history made it impossible to put this book down. I loved how Drew went from carefree athlete to a man trying to prove himself to Audrey and their son, Graham. It’s a redemption arc done right!

Audrey is a fantastic leading lady—smart, strong, and not about to let Drew off the hook too easily. Their journey back to each other is full of emotional highs and lows, but it’s also sweet and heartfelt in all the right ways. And Graham? He’s the cutest little addition, making every scene with him extra heartwarming.

If you’re into sports romances with a great mix of heat, heart, and second-chance vibes, Center Ice delivers. It’s the kind of story that’ll have you cheering for the characters from start to finish. Definitely a must-read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Julia Connors is becoming a go-to author
Reviewed in Spain on February 26, 2025
If you are looking for a recommendation to confirm that you SHOULD read this book and you have not read Julia Connors Frozen Heart series (or at least the last book, On the Line, stop right now and go read that first.

Center Ice may be the official first book of the Boston Rebels series but On the Line is both the end of the Frozen Heart series as well as the prequel to this one. Please, just trust me. There are so many details in Center Ice that you won't fully understand if you don't get the backstory first. Julia quickly summarized some important details in this book that were given with more detail before so I could follow along, but it makes more sense when you have the full picture.

OK, so have you read On the Line? Were you so fascinated with Jameson Flynn and his family and friends that you want to know more? Well. here you have it in the Boston Rebels series. Unfortunately, it didn't start off quite as high as my expectations had set. Don't get me wrong. There are a lot of things that I like about the story of Audrey and Drew, but there are also so many questions that I have that did not get answered.

Assuming you followed my advice and read On the Line, you know that Audrey is a single 26/27-year-old mother with a 5-year-old son. She was basically raised as a late teen by her older half-brother, Jameson Flynn, who was a hockey player for the Boston Rebels but then retired early to raise his younger sisters and became a sports agent. Audrey and her sister, Jules, took over their father's failing construction company and reopened it with the financial help of Jameson, promoting women in the construction industry. Audrey had a child in her last year of college, and along with raising his teenage sisters to young adulthood, Jameson is now helping raise his nephew because his sister refuses to divulge the identity of the boy's father. So here we have the story of Audrey, her son and, *gasp* the child's father is now back in Boston. However, he didn't return to take his son. Why? Well, basically because he didn't know he had a son. And here is my first problem. So apparently, Drew and Audrey knew each other in college when she would tutor Drew in calculus. They had a one-night hook-up and then Drew was drafted to a hockey team in Canada and left. Audrey shortly learned she was pregnant and tried to get a hold of Drew but he ignored her calls. Umm... this screams douchebag to me. Why? Well, according to the story (view spoiler)
Next, are you seriously telling me that Jameson is Drew's agent and didn't see any similarity between Drew and Graham? Okay, he could have his doubts if he didn't know that his sister and Drew knew each other, but he obviously knows what university they both went to and the years that they were there. It's not so far-fetched to think that maybe they had bumped into each other at some point. I mean, if Drew's mother just looked at Graham and knew instantly because of the resemblance...hell, if GRAHAM KNEW because he saw a picture of Drew at 5 years old and thought it was a picture of himself, how could Jameson not at least suspect something?
Then, Drew and Audrey. I liked the spice between the two but it felt like it moved fast. I mean, we went from them seeing each other at a BBQ, while Audrey was with Graham, Drew instantly realized that this was his son. Then he is telling Audrey that he wants to be in Graham's life, as well as Audrey's marry her and spend forever with her all this over the span of a few days to a few weeks. This after ignoring her calls 6 years before, not thinking about her in 6 years. What?!?! How did his feelings just appear so quickly? When did he get to know the adult version of Audrey? I mean, Audrey is pretty cool. Badass businesswoman, smart, loving, and is there for her family and friends. But Drew hasn't witnessed any of this and he is already ready to spend forever with her?

And then we have Graham. He is 5 but it feels like he is 50 sometimes. I think he is an old soul who is wise beyond his years and is ZEN. The kid was drawn to Drew from the moment they met, then realized that Drew is his father and just accepts it without question or trauma and is happy go lucky. I call BS. I have 2 children and they have questions about EVERYTHING. There is no way that Graham didn't have any questions and just accepted this but of information like it was only natural that his father is Drew.

Good story but not great. There were some in the Frozen Hearts series that I liked more. With that said, I'm glad we still have Jameson and Lauren as our anchor between the two series and that Morgan also continues with us here. I want to learn her backstory better and see her fall in love. I know the next book needs to be on Jules Flynn, Jameson's other sister, but I'm hoping Morgan is next.

Center Ice is the first book in the Boston Rebels series. This is a second chance, surprise baby, hockey romance starring our MCs, Audrey and Drew. They originally met at university (college) when Drew needed a math tutor. Although they both had an attraction to each other, they never were sure about the other’s attraction for them so they kept their feelings locked away until one night when they had a quick fling that changed their lives forever. Following that, Drew got drafted to the NHL and Audrey found out she was pregnant. Six years have since past, and Drew has now been traded back to his hometown. He bumps into Audrey and finds out he is father to 5-year-old Graham. He now has to grapple with this new reality and make room for Audrey and his son, as well as some other things that need his attention like his family and mother’s health issues.

My overall thoughts of this book = Chef’s kiss! 🤌💋 I truly loved it! I’m not normally into the secret/surprise baby trope but this trope was executed so well in this book. I loved the explanation of why Drew did not find out about his son all those years. As for Audrey and Drew’s connection, it was just top-tier! They were just so sweet. They had such great chemistry and you could see how much they both liked each other in the past and how neither forgot about that past relationship with each other. But we still got to see them develop their relationship in the present as they have obviously grown since their college years.

Their story was beautifully written. I loved how strong, caring, and independent Audrey was. And, we cannot forget how sweet and supportive Drew was throughout. I also really liked seeing how well the characters grew from page one, all the way through to the end. Specifically, Audrey carried so much weight as a single parent at the beginning; I really enjoyed seeing her let Drew in and allow his support and comfort. Drew was such a delight as well; seeing him adjust to parenthood and have that relationship with Graham, as well as adjust to his career in a new team, also, with him helping out his mom, whilst allowing that space for her own independence. His character was just such a joy to read (listen) about. This was my first Julia Connors book, and it certainly won't be my last!

Narrated by Andi Arndt and Teddy Hamilton. Teddy was amazing at capturing the supportive, caring, and sporty moments that Drew provided. Meanwhile, Andi’s performance as Audrey was perfect. I could feel Audrey’s strength, her independence, and her sass in Andi’s performance. They were both fantastic and brought these characters, and this story to life.

Thanks to the author, Julia Connors, and the team at HomeCooked Books for providing me with an advanced audio review copy of this book. All opinions provided in this review are entirely my own.

Oh I absolutely loved this story.

Audrey and Drew knew each other back in university. They had one night together and then Drew left to pursue his professional career and he left everything behind.

Once he left, Audrey finds out that she is pregnant, she tried to do the right thing by trying to get a hold of Drew but those attempts were ignored.

Almost 6 years later and he was traded back to Boston which was his goal. Drew’s mom is sick and he wants to be closer to home so he can spend time with her and take some of the responsibility off his sisters.

“ I don’t want her to have to do this all by herself anymore. “

A twist of fate had them meeting again at her brothers house (who happens to be Drew’s agent) and Drew quickly puts the pieces together.

“ I don’t see how there’s any other possibility than her being mine. “

I love how Drew doesn’t even hesitate to step up and want to be involved in their life. This man falls and he falls hard. One minute he is telling Audrey that he couldn’t give her more than sex and the next second he is calling her his future life.

“ I want your days, and your nights. I want the good times and the messy, difficult bits too. “

Audrey is a heck of a character. I love how she gives Drew some quick reality checks and lets him know exactly what she needs while they are figuring out their new reality.

“Quiet, princess, or you’ll wake our kid.”

I have to mention that the spice in this book… damnn. Drew may be filled with golden retriever vibes but he definitely knows how to take control when it counts. Their intimate moments were so hot and tender while they reconnect.

I enjoyed this book so much and I’m so excited to continue with this series.
