FOOD SAFETY COMPLIANCE IN PACKAGE PRINTING Exploring ink challenges in package printing, our recent Global Ink Survey highlighted Traceability, Quality Assurance, and Auditing as key concerns (https://lnkd.in/etcSzSfp). To tackle these, we're launching an InkConnection blog series exploring this crucial theme. Initially, we thought that our traceability software was the sole solution to help our clients comply with food safety standards. However, as we delved into various food safety management schemes, we discovered that there are many more ink-related safety standards. And that with the entirety of our equipment, software, and services, we can assist our clients with meeting these standards. In this first blog, we introduce the three main food safety management schemes that adhere to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) requirements in package printing: 1. BRC Global Standard (BRCGS) for Packaging Materials 2. FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) 3. Safe Quality Food (SQF) We reveal eleven ink-related food safety standards recognized by GFSI, that package printers need to know about. 🌟 MEET GFSI TRACEABILITY STANDARDS! Did you know that "Traceability, Quality Assurance, and Auditing" are among the top ink management challenges faced by package printing professionals around the world? These critical factors play a vital role in ensuring the safety and quality of food packaging, especially in the ever-demanding food industry where safety is paramount. Stay tuned for expert insights and best practices on how to navigate these challenges effectively! In the food industry, maintaining stringent safety standards is non-negotiable, and the ability to track ink batches accurately is a fundamental aspect of ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Are you well-equipped and prepared to meet the stringent criteria set forth by Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) audits? You will be expected to perform a traceability exercise, within a designated time limit (BRCGS stipulates a 4-hour limit). To pass, you must recover a minimum 98% of all selected materials. Failure can constitute a major violation and, in some cases, automatic failure. The complicating factor with ink traceability is that spot colours are blended from a formula of base components. Additionally, the base components of reused press-return inks must be identified. Performing a recovery exercise according to GFSI requirements would be practically impossible. With GSE Traceability software, instant reporting of full ink batch-to-job or job-to-batch traceability becomes possible. ATTENTION PACKAGING PRINTERS: Cut ink spend (and carbon foot print) with a ‘spectral’ method for easily reusing problematic leftover inks! Reusing inks left over from a flexo or gravure print run is vital for cutting ink spend and waste in package printing. But some returned inks are hard to reuse: if they’re contaminated, or if their colour varies from the target of a new job, for instance. In these cases, the spectral method gets these inks used easily: use the spectral data from leftover batches and create a recipe of a new target colour that comprises both return inks and fresh inks. Using this back-up method as well as the conventional ‘mathematical’ matters for all other situations, you can get all your leftover inks used before they expire! It means you cut ink spend, reduce waste and improve your sustainability record. BOOST SUSTAINABILITY WITH THE SPECTRAL METHOD FOR REUSING LEFTOVER INKS! Reusing leftover spot colour inks is a big contributor to sustainability in flexo and gravure package printing. Most returned inks get reused as ingredients for new but similar colours in exact weights, calculated mathematically. But this mathematical method doesn’t work for returned inks that are contaminated, or that have widely differing spectral values. Thankfully there’s another method specially for getting best value out of these problematic press-return inks. Supported by new ink management software, the method uses spectral data of returned and fresh ink ingredients, to reach the new target. As we explain, the spectral method can declutter your inventory and boost your sustainability – but there are downsides to think of.
