Sterling leans closer, until his lips are to my ear, then my eyelids lower. He breathes against my skin, and he has me right where he wants me.
“Be completely naked when I get there, Rodriguez. You fucking hear me?”
💋 their mishap/miscommunication/fall out from their past isnt dragged out the entire book which i appreciated. it’s cleared up at just the right time to allow them both to explore the tension and feelings growing between them with a clean slate.
💋 Lexi’s family issues were handled really well. her family weren’t the black and white villains, they just sometimes struggled to see eye to eye but you knew that they wholeheartedly loved her. it wasn’t drama for drama’s sake (like with Joss’ parents in the previous book), but it really added to Lexi’s character development and why she acts the way she does.
💋 also... this author knows how to write some sexy male side characters? first my main man, the loml Ricky Ruiz and now the swoon-worthy, hot-nerd vet Matt Logan?
💋 there were a few things i wasn’t entirely okay with which is why this isn’t a solid four star read— one being them having sex when Lexi was extremely vulnerable after having a mentally and emotionally exhausting day. idk... it never feels right when this occurs in romance bcos they don’t seem to be in the right frame of mind to have sex, in my opinion.
💋 also the consequences of their breakup felt really harsh. like it wasn’t just a breakup that could be pushed to the side, it had a real psychological impact on Lexi. like her trauma was, in a way, used as a way to break them up, solidifying to Lexi that she’s unloveable, that people will always leave her and that she’s not enough... it just felt too harsh.
yes there was a reason for their breakup, i understand that and understood Sterling’s thought process, but the impact it had on Lexi and her self-esteem, her self-worth was brushed aside far too nonchalantly. it wasn’t even explored, as though Sterling didn’t fully rip into her trauma lmao (whether he meant to or not).
💋 i wish the transition into their relationship had been a lil slower, a lil more drawn out. i was a tad underwhelmed and unsatisfied since these two had a lot of heat and intensity... so low-key wanted them to clash with it all, but instead their relationship is softer than i expected therefore there’s less resistance when they get together. which was a bit boring and anticlimactic.
