CT TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL

January 2024 Newsletter

A message from our Executive Director

Dear CTC members, partners, and friends,

Happy 2024! As we close the first month of the new year, I am excited about what’s in store for the Council and our members. Soon I will reach my one-year anniversary at CTC, with pride in what we accomplished and an awareness of the work that remains to be done. I am committed to elevating and communicating the value of CTC membership and to providing more opportunities for our member companies to connect, network, share resources and best practices.

We have in-person and virtual events planned for this year, and we are building mutually beneficial partnerships with organizations that can extend our reach. I continue to engage with TECNA, our professional association, and learn from the successes and challenges of sister councils around North America, who share CTC’s dedication to supporting tech companies on their path to growth. With TECNA’s and other partners’ support, we amplify voices on issues that companies face like labor shortages, rising costs and regulatory hurdles (such as the recent changes to R&D tax credit provisions and the need to support H.R. 7024).

Finally, plans are under way for our 2024 19th Annual Women of Innovation Awards event, to be held this fall. Start thinking of deserving women in STEM that you would like to recognize, reach out anytime to become or stay involved, and stray tuned for details.

With warm regards ,

Milena

Member Spotlight: DV7 Engineering

An Interview with

William R. Stamm Jr,

Owner/CEO

Describe your company and the products and services you offer.

We are a passionate and dedicated group of engineers - hardware engineers (design and develop electronics, embedded, PLC and electro mechanical), software engineers (design and develop embedded, PLC, GUI, data analytics, cybersecurity and AI), mechanical engineers design and develop full products, enclosures, to safety and mil rated specifications), testers (IV&V for software and hardware, integration, system level unit level, module level and cybersecurity) and documentation specialists (certified documentation for certified agencies, such as the FDA & FAA). DV7 engineers are specialists and experts who have produced and tested sophisticated products and software using our proprietary process and framework for decades.

The DV7 process and framework is scalable for non-certified industries, so all industries can take advantage of our expertise, common knowledge and efficiencies. Simply put, we like finding solutions to problems and utilizing all our skills for the benefit of our clients to produce world-class products and solutions.

We are also caring human beings. A percentage of our profits will go to causes in the local community that fight hunger and focus on children.

Who are your competitors and how does your company differentiate itself from them?

There are very few companies that position themselves like DV7. In individual industries there can be competitors in individual industries such as Sterling Medical and medical device development, or communication services in avionics for software testing. Across all industries and disciplines there are no competitors that position themselves like us. This differentiates us and gives us a better opportunity to succeed. We do not focus myopically on one industry or one discipline. It's also more fun, we get better engineers, we create better engineers and have a ball while we're doing it.

What are the biggest business opportunities in your market over the next 12 months?

The biggest opportunities in 2024 are still to be determined. Since we do business in multiple industries with multiple disciplines we are always looking for new to take advantage of our knowledge and expertise. Communications, industrial automation and manufacturing are places that we look to get more involved in.

Legislative Breakfast Recap

More than 250 life sciences leaders and legislators attended the January 22 event, timed intentionally before the short legislative session beginning February 7th. Based on feedback from the event, BioCT is currently updating its legislative agenda.

Some Key takeaways:

  • Economic incentives drive growth. The key ingredients for success are robust investment infrastructure, vibrant academic community, and stimulating policies.
  • Investments such as the R&D tax credit and clusters pay off years down the line, but they are already seeing immense benefits.
  • There are huge advantages in hubs and urban environments centered around top academic institutions for talent, and a need to build transportation around them.
  • De-risked lab space is essential.
  • There are immense benefits from, and a need to expand and sustain, existing education programs and scholarships.
  • There is a need for long-term growth strategies, including robust training and stronger ties with academia.
  • We need to support diversity and career pathways so that every community in CT is ready for, and aware of, opportunities in life sciences.

STEM to STEAM: New Program to Support Business Needs

The University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford has introduced a new bachelor of arts degree program in engineering science in response to the state’s workforce needs for the engineering, manufacturing and technology sectors. “As 90% of USJ undergraduate students are native to Connecticut and tend to stay here after graduation, this program comes at a crucial time for the state and the New England region,” said USJ Dean of SASBE, Dr. Raouf Boules. “The new program is poised to meet this demand by providing a comprehensive engineering curriculum that not only imparts technical knowledge but also instills problem-solving skills, creativity, and adaptability. The innovative program is part of USJ’s School of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education (SASBE). Classes begin in Fall 2024 and enrollment is underway. Read more at USJ.edu
