A Moth to Flame, Bigger Bites, and New Album

A Moth to Flame has been out for a little more than a month now and could use your help (I feel like one of those politicians sending a mass text to save democracy!) We’d like more sales. We need more reviews!

The first few weeks are paramount for a book’s survival. I feel like Moth is, hands down, the most sophisticated, intricately plotted, and deftly characterized of all my books to date.

Quotes by Joe Clifford  (?)

“This is the part they don’t tell you about in the movies. Or in On the Road. This is not rock ’n’ roll.

You are not William Burroughs, and it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference if Kurt Cobain was slumped over in an alleyway in Seattle the day Bleach came out. There is no junkie chic. This is not Soho and you are not Sid Vicious. You are not a drugstore cowboy and you are not spotting trains. You are not a part of anything—no underground sect, no counter-culture movement, no music scene, nothing. You have just been released from jail and are walking down Mission Street, alternating between taking a hit off a cigarette and puking, looking for coins on the ground so you can catch a bus as you shit yourself.”
Joe Clifford, Junkie Love

“Dinner was nice. Not the meal so much. The only restaurant we could find open on Thanksgiving was Denny’s, and you never walk out of Denny’s saying, That was a good decision.”
Joe Clifford, Give Up the Dead

“Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.”
Joe Clifford, Junkie Love: A Story of Recovery and Redemption

“I know there are some people out there
who think I am supposed to end up
in a room by myself

with a gun and a bottle full of hate,
a locked door and my slack mouth open
like a disconnected phone.

But I hate those people back
from the core of my donkey soul
and the hatred makes me strong
and my survival is their failure,

and my happiness would kill them
so I shove joy like a knife
into my own heart over and over

and I force myself toward pleasure,
and I love this November life
where I run like a train
deeper and deeper
into the land of my enemies.”
Tony Hoagland, What Narcissism Means to Me

“[T]hat his cheating and his bitterness and his cruelty were the revolt of his will ... against a deep-rooted instinct of holiness, against a desire for God that terrified and yet obsessed him.”
Somerset Maugham

“They pictured themselves dashing around Manhattan, latte in one hand, cell phone in the other, adorably breaking a designer heel while hailing a cab, and falling into the arms of a charming, disarming soul mate with winningly floppy hair.”
Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl

“Usually, during the past fifteen-odd years, I'd hated to see the morning come. That's a psychotic symptom, you know, not wanting to awaken--hating to face things that are bound to be more than you can handle.”
Jim Thompson, After Dark, My Sweet

“I'm not sneering at sex. It's necessary and it doesn't have to be ugly. But it always has to be managed. Making it glamorous is a billion-dollar industry and it costs every cent of it.”
Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye
