Two simple words hold the truth of our love: wait and hope.

Olivia

Rhys Garrett—recent high school graduate, ex-captain of the basketball team, and my brother’s rival both on and off the court.
Oh, and he’s also the guy I just hit with my truck.
Awesome.
To be fair, he had it coming.
Why else was he dressed in all black, in the middle of the night, if not to hide out amongst the darkness?

Rhys
I wasn’t looking where I was going or what was around me. I didn’t even see the headlights. Just felt the impact. And I thought, as strange as it was, that getting hit by a car may be the best thing that could’ve happened to me.
Until I opened my eyes…
…and she told me her name.
*
Some might call it fate, destiny, kismet…
A collision of souls.
One night.
One chance encounter.
The problem?
One night wasn’t enough.
But the more time we spent together, the more truths came to light.
And soon, we’d discover that what we once thought was meant to be…
…is not made to last.

Four simple words. A million different emotions. My miracle is you.

At this point in the year, Not Made to Last is my top favorite book of 2024. That's all you really need to know. It’s that good. An emotional, poignant, must-read book! Jay McLean is elite and writes some of my favorite books of all time. If you haven't read her yet, you absolutely must. Now, on to the actual review…

If you’ve read the ‘Heartache and Hope’ duet, then you know and love Rhys. I was thrilled to see we were getting his story. Olivia and Rhys meet for the first time when she runs into him. Literally. She hits him with her truck. Don’t worry, he’s okay. But he’s stunned stupid by her. Though it’s the first time he meets Olivia, Olivia knows much more about Rhys.

We all know of and love the brother’s best friend troupe, but what about the brother’s enemy/rival troupe? This is done so well. I say that because you can’t help but love both Rhys and Dom (the brother). Because of this, Olivia knows it’s not the best idea to be spending time with Rhys. But she can’t seem to stay away from him.

Both Olivia and Rhys are dealing with things. Life is hard. Though on the outside, it seems easy for Rhys, most people don’t look deeper and see what is really going on with him. Olivia knows him better than most and sees past that fun-loving, easygoing facade he has for the world to see. She sees the real Rhys and loves him for who he is.
Kissing Rhys Garrett is like breathing in sunshine, warming me from the inside, thawing my heart, my soul, until cracks appear in my ice-cold armor.

Jay writes the most lovable characters. They’re flawed and real, and I just want to hug them all. The family dynamic of this book was the most special thing. Honestly, both families. Rhys and Olivia’s. It brought me to tears and gave me all the feels. So emotional in the best way.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jay McLean’s words are magic. She is honestly the most underrated author out there. She has always been one of my favorites, since I read her first book and with each book she writes, it only solidifies that. Not Made to Last is one of those books that will stay with me. The romance is wonderful, but the family dynamic was my favorite part. Ohana means family. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up! You won’t regret it.
“The family we create means more than the family who created us.”

I hate it when I'm completely obsessed with a book at the beginning, and I'm so engrossed in it that an hour feels like half an hour, but at some point in the story something suddenly switches in me and I completely lose interest in it. In the first half of this book I was having such a good time, I was laughing, blushing, sweating and my kindle must have had enough of me because I was constantly highlighting something, but then one second and suddenly I didn't feel anything at all. To be honest, I was even thinking about giving this book five stars, but then my rating gradually started to drop and drop until, unfortunately, it dropped to just barely three stars.

As I already said — I liked the first half, but the second half completely lost me. I think one of the main reasons for this may be that I often had moments where I was genuinely confused. Confused to the point where I felt like I missed a chapter or two, because one moment I understood everything and then the next chapter came and I was completely lost. The explanation usually came later, but I can't remember the last time I felt like that while reading a book.

This was my first time reading Jay McLean’s book, and while I liked the writing style, some of the quotes here, let's just say, left me quite confused.

"He has a couple of inches on me, but I have a couple of pounds. I also have enough rage to kill a small horse. Rage I’ve kept contained for far too long."

What type of comparison is that? I literally had to google whether it was an idiom or something — English is not my first language, but as it turns out, it was not.

"I switch positions and hug her to me, noting how small she feels in my arms. One wrong move, and I could break her."

What kind of thought is that? Did his intrusive thoughts won or what? If a man thought that about me when we cuddled, that would be the last time we did it.

Overall, the book wasn't that bad — the characters were alright and at one point I was really invested in their story, but unfortunately it turned out the way it did. I've actually heard and read a lot of good things about this author's books, so I'll probably try reading something different from her one day and maybe I'll like it better. We’ll see. I hope.

'𝐍O𝐓 𝐌A𝐃E T𝐎 𝐋A𝐒T' Is a full length romance book by author Jay McLean. Spoken in 'dual perspectives.'❥ Rhys and Olivia ❥

God how I've missed this author's words, when I saw this doing the rounds I couldn't wait to sign up, once it landed on my ipad, game over completely!! I inhaled this, devoured it like my life depended on it.

A twisted turn of events changed their lives forever..

When opposites attract..One would think that Olivia and Rhys were as different as chalk and cheese, polar opposites but delve deeper and these two had more in common than one might think. The only difference I found between the two was one came from money the other did not. Above everything else in life when it came to their siblings these two loved fiercely.

This gave me all the feels to infinity, it had me going up and down like a yo-yo, one minute I’d be basking in their first meet, giggling, and loving everything that was unfolding right in front of my eyes, to tears welling up in those very same eyes.

I loved these two! They were perfection, from their unorthodox meeting to more. One night out of the blue a guy dressed all in black gets lightly tapped by her vehicle as she was rolling to a stop, but as he tells the story one would think she'd run him over in a mactruck. A hospital visit to the emergency room later and this lonely boy didn't want the night to end so he concocted up a plan to give her the cash in his wallet if they just hang for the night to just talk.

She knew who he was as soon as she saw his face, her brother and he are rivals, to say they dislike each other is an understatement. So therein is the start to what becomes a friendship/to more, but to navigate this budding friendship it will have to be kept on the quiet. A secret she hates keeping from her brother.

This pulled me in from start to finish..

I laughed
I swooned
I got teary eyed

This author's unique storytelling is flawless, her characters are unforgettable, her effortless ability to have me eating out of the palm of her hand as I lap up the words each and every time she releases something cemented yet again why this author is one of my top unicorn authors.

This one was a story I didn’t want to end. 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

”You lost someone you just met. I’ve lost my best friend. You’ve known me for weeks… I’ve loved you for years.”

In 2019, I remember binge reading both the author’s “More than” and “Preston brothers” series so fast. I just fell in love with Jay’s writing and her emotional complicated stories. Reading this book reminded me of that feeling I got when I was a teenager binge reading emotional series while everyone kept on telling me “to get a life”. This book just made me want to go back and reread some of my favorites by her.

“I’ve never said goodbye to you, Rhys,” she murmurs, arms around her waist as she talks to the ground beneath us.
I step toward her, expecting her to pull back. She doesn’t.
“It’s always goodnight with you,” she says. “Never goodbye.”

The story was truly beautiful and have heart. I struggled a little bit with the time jumps, but otherwise it was such a beautiful book. I loved the characters and the dialogues. The writing was just so amazing and emotional. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good new adult book. I finished it in one setting. I really loved it.

“Sometimes I wonder if that’s all life is. The constant search for that one person who gives you hope. Who inspires you. Someone you’re willing to wait years for, even when the outcome may not always be forever.”

Amazing. All I can say is Not Made to Last is ah-mah-zing! So sweet. So emotional. So angsty. So much heart and healing. The legit found family of it all. Olivia and Rhys ‘meet’ in a legit accident and spend one night together that makes Olivia, Rhys’ new obsession, but there’s so much more to their story before they actually meet. I want to say so much, but I always feel like Jay’s stories are best experienced when you’re reading nearly everything fresh. Just know that these two have a lot of personal backstory and somehow those backstories make them the perfect understanding pairing for each other. Although the road to “HEA” is filled with reluctance, secrets, tears, and reveals that will have you gasping. Like up until the epilogue Jay had me holding my breath for ALL of these characters. Not even just Olivia and Rhys, everyone that you will meet in this book.

Not Made to Last is the perfect example of WHY I will continue to be a Jay McLean reader as long as she publishes. She always somehow weaves a heartfelt story that has me holding my breath and wiping my tears throughout, but also has me feeling every single emotion and closing the book with the biggest smile and the warmest feeling of happiness for the fictional people she just made me care for. Recommend to anyone who enjoys new adult romance that covers some heavy themes and has that dash of necessary new adult angst.

I feel so bad for not having enough patience to deal with this book and somehow, I feel like I'm betraying my pookie bear Rhys 😔(that's actually one of his nicknames) by giving up on him because Rhys Garrett is the fucking deal. Maybe, I'll try again someday just for him.

My main problem has got to be the plot and it's execution. One moment, you're having the time of your life reading a book and slowly, as the story gradually progresses, you start losing interest and don't feel connected anymore, one of the worst feelings ever. The plot felt so disordered, I stumble upon a little reveal of the backstory and wait for it to properly unfold or at least make sense and boom, the author throws in another reveal in the next chapter. The whole trauma dumping was purely chaos. I have nothing against traumatic backstories as long as I'm hooked to uncover the deep layers rather than being frustrated over them.

Olivia + Rhys

We already met Rhys in the Heartache Duet. He used to date Ava and played Basketball with Connor in Highschool.
Now that is all over. Highschool is behind him. He just turned 19. He's rich - has it all. But that's not really the truth.
Things happened in his past and he just doesn't know what to do with his life. Or if it's worth living at all.
That's when he meets Olivia. She kinda almost kills him with her car.
And then they spend the whole night in the ER and they keep on spending time together - even though they shouldn't. For various reasons. Only one of them being that Olivia's brother hates Rhys - they used to be Basketball rivals.

🌺🥑

I really enjoyed reading this. One might think that I'm too old for such young books - but pfft. I'm on my 17th round of 29 - so still pretty youngish! LOL!
There are a lot of 'mysteries' scattered through the story. I didn't love that. It was too much. You read a scene and something strange is said or happens and then you don't get an answer and your old brain thinks... did I miss something earlier? Or is this supposed to be building up suspense and mystery? It was the latter all the times. And I really didn't like that. Especially in those few chapters where it says: 3 years earlier and you read and read and suddenly you realize that the three years earlier thing was just a few paragraphs long, but nobody told me that we're now back in the present. To summarize things: this book was too complicated for me. BUT I still loved Rhys and Olivia and Max and it was sweet and funny and heartbreaking - even though you have NO idea why most things are heartbreaking because it's all a mystery and you won't find out until the end.
Well. I wished this would've been written a little less complicated.
But I still loved reading it. It was a beautiful New Adult Love Story .... I even had some tears in my eyes here and there...

NOT MADE TO LAST was a very sweet and funny and moving New Adult romance drama! You will so fall in love with Olivia + Rhys + Max - READ IT!

It was everywhere and nowhere. It had the potential of a 5 🌟 story, but it was so chaotic and disorganised.
You have to actually piece the information together in order to understand the story. Which is not a bad thing per se. But it was so poorly executed.

About 90% of the book is drama without actually understanding where does it comes from and why it's so severe.
And then, when you actually have the patience to read that long, it's half a page.........aaaaand we are done. Next chapter: happy times.

I mean.......say what now???!!!!

Not Made to Last by Jay McLean is a captivating exploration of new adult romance that feels refreshingly authentic. The story unfolds with a chance encounter between Olivia and Rhys, two individuals whose lives intersect in unexpected ways, setting the stage for a journey of love, growth, and self-discovery.

"Olivia just became my new sport. My new discipline. My new obsession. And she has no fucking clue what she’s in for."

From the outset, I was immediately drawn to the characters. Olivia and Rhys are portrayed with depth and complexity, each grappling with their own set of challenges and insecurities. Their relationship develops organically, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way.

What sets this book apart is its ability to capture the essence of the new adult experience. McLean deftly navigates themes of identity, ambition, and resilience, grounding the story in a relatable and emotionally resonant narrative. Additionally, the supporting cast adds depth and dimension to the story, enriching the overall reading experience.

“Kissing Rhys Garrett is like breathing in sunshine, warming me from the inside, thawing my heart, my soul, until cracks appear in my ice-cold armor.”

Not Made to Last is yet another testament to Jay McLean's talent as a storyteller. Her ability to craft engaging narratives with authentic characters shines through, making this book a compelling and immersive read. Not Made to Last is an absolute must-read if you're a fan of heartfelt romance.

A billion stars and more....
If you have read Jay before, then you know she pulls at your heartstrings with precise accuracy!
This is a new adult that will make you feel all the emotions for the characters. You may even shed some tears, I did!
I feel in love with these characters from the first page, and even though I am done with this story, they will hold a piece of my heart.

Rhys and Olivia are opposites in so many ways, but they both have a pull to one another that can't be explained. They both love hard and with everything they have. That alone makes them special.
Rhys and Olivia have something so rare, and they try so hard to hold on to it. Their story is not easy to read, but worth every minute of heartache!

When you read this book, be prepared to have your heart torn out and placed back in your chest.

I am going to sit and recover from this book... I can't wait to see what is to come from Jay next.

“My miracle is you.”

Oh. My. Heart!!! Not Made to Last wholeheartedly owned me! Author Jay McLean crafts a beautifully broken saga of soulmates, survival, sacrifice and second chances at love and life that hits every feel. Rotating between tears and smiles while reading, I felt every emotion of the hero and heroine. I cried all the tears. I smiles all the smiles. I found myself holding my breath again and again.

Since devouring The Heartache duet, I loved Rhys and wanted find out what woman would retire the player. Beneath the seemingly carefree, playboy exterior is so much depth … so much pain … so much more. Olivia had to grow up quickly at a young age, and I admired her strength and sacrifice. Broken sees broken and Rhys and Olivia make each other whole. Both are survivors and I loved them both. Rhys and Olivia have an instant connection with chemistry I felt ignite through the pages.

I can’t stop thinking about Not Made to Last that’s so much more than a new adult romance. It’s a journey of heartbreak and healing that shows that the power of love can heal even the most complicated of wounds. This book resonated with me … touching straight to my heart and soul. On my phone screen sits two words: “Just breathe.” It’s my constant reminder to take a breath when anxiety hits, pulling me under. This book beautifully tackles that turmoil many of us face. You just don’t know one’s pain or struggles so be kind always.

Not Made to Last is heartbreakingly beautiful and brilliantly told. This book breathes fire, blazes with intensity, and bleeds beauty, bravery, sacrifice and soul. These characters that carved out a piece of my heart. Rhys and Olivia brought so many emotions to life. Moving and mesmerizing, Not Made to Last matters.

“All human wisdom is contained in these two words: wait and hope.”

Go one-click this top 2024 and lifetime romance that’s an emotional slam dunk!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but worth every breath and every star

***4,5 "Cheeks!!!" stars***

"All human wisdom is contained in these two words - Wait and Hope." -Alexander Dumas {Count of Monte Cristo}

I am not exaggerating when I am saying that Jay McLean is one of my favorite authors!!!
Her stories are always making my heart sing, usually in a melancholic tune, but at the same time, in a hopeful one!!!
Her heroes are going through lots of ugly stuff, but in the end, hope and love are guiding their way in the right direction.
Exactly that happened to Rhys and Olivia. Two people from the opposites sides had a collission literally and figuratively.
Rhys and Liv will make you swoon, smile and cry, but their story will bring you so much hope...
And for once again, Jay McLean will prove to you that the family you will create is the family that you really need...

"The family we create means more than the family who created us."

Olivia and Rhys' first meeting was kind of unorthodox...
Liv hit Rhys with her car in the middle of the night... and she stayed with him until she knew that he was alright...
But Rhys' loneliness made him keep her close to him for some more time and this need became something more...
Liv knew who he was and she knew that she had to stay away from him. Rhys was her brother's rival and there were tension between them... Though that didn't stop her for allowing Rhys entering her life and stealing more of her time...
But things have many layers and even though, these two were seemed like they were meant to be, they were not made to last...

"What are you hoping for, Rhys?"
His answer is simple. Fast. To the point. "You."

I liked Rhys very much in the "Heartache" duet, but in here, he broke my heart. This boy was suffering so much and his only solace was Olivia... He was struggling to breathe and that fact was pulling him under all the time...
Rhys was a good guy, with a golden heart and the people that was letting in were deserving it... I liked the connection between him and Max... and i liked how fiercely he was loving his sister...
Olivia was the soothing balm to his heart and soul, but nothing is easy in this life!!!

"Olivia just became my new sport. My new discipline. My new obsession.
And she was no fucking clue what she's in for."

As for Liv??? This girl was deserving a medal for what she was carrying upon her shoulders...
I am amazed but her strength in such young age...
Yes, she had made mistakes, but no one can accuse her for them!!!
She was devoted to her little family and she was fiercely protected of them...
Her relationship with Dominic was amazing!!! I love what they did together...
And Rhys was the cherry on top. He was forbidden, but her heart was singing when she was in his presence...

"I've always believed in pain. Believed in agony and grief and suffering. But I never believed in heartbreak. Until now."

I loved this story so much!!!
It was heartwhelming... It was emotional... It was beautiful...
Rhys and Liv weren't meant to last, but against all odds, they were balancing perfect each other...
I suppose after this ending that it will follow another one book with Dominic???
Hope so, cause I loved the guy so much and I am craving to get his story!!!
Bravo for once again, Jay!!! You have a way with the words!!! They are staying with you for a long time after you had closed the book!!!

"I made you a promise... You breathe, I breathe."

one more time. every time .

I devoured this!
It arrived in my kindle library and I was almost scared to start it because I KNEW I would have a severe book hang over once I finished it . I KNEW IT.
And I wasn’t wrong. These words are everything.

“Breathe. One more time. Every time.”

Both Rhys and Ollie’s stories hit deep. They hit hard. But their strength and resilience holds strong so you the reader who are 100% on the ride with them can hold strong too.

“All human wisdom is contained in these two words. Wait and Hope”

This story is heartbreakingly beautiful. ALL the characters are relatable and lovable. I loved the whole cast! I loved this world . I just loved it.

I haven’t been this excited about a book release in so long. This book and these characters speak to you.

Immediately, you are engrossed. This is definitely a book you need to set aside time for, because you will not want to put it down.

I do not want to spoil anything so suffice to say READ THIS BOOK!
Also, check content warnings as it does deal with some topics that may not be suitable for all readers.

No one writes young and beautiful love quite like McLean. The twists and turns of Olivia’s and Rhys’ white knuckling story were perfectly paired with laugh-out-loud moments. The secondary characters add depth and are the last piece of creating a story that truly engrosses you. You will not want to put it down.

i waited two years for this book and oh my god it was truly WORTH IT. it’s only fair my first five star of the year goes to jay’s comeback book which is literally ✨superb✨. i dragged out finishing this book for so long simply because i did not want it to end at all. oliviarhys have me completely enamoured with them and their love. they were two broken people with the weight of the world on their shoulders finding comfort in each other 😭😭😭😭

description

not to forget the bond they both shared with their siblings?? good god it was truly one of the biggest highlights of the book for me. the way olivia was basically a child raising two children had me tearing up so badly. her protectiveness over max and dominic hit me so hard along with her anxiety disorder. it was all so real and relatable i couldn’t help but love them😭🩷

description

rhys’ bond with his older sister izzy oh boy what can i say except that they were so precious. i do wish we got to see a bit more wholesome scenes with izzy and rhys but what he did for his sister brought tears to my eyes, especially the deep trauma he endured. his selflessness is so commendable and how he loves his family and friends so whole heartedly🥹🩵

description

one thing i must say is that even tho this book was a complete emotional rollercoaster and did have me crying at many parts, it wasn’t as gut wrenching as some of jay’s other works. but i think that’s what made it a bit easier for me to read it too since it was still quite heartbreaking at many points without that completely overpowering the story 👏🙏

tbh this book was close to being a four star because at some point since at first i felt it was a bit insta lust/love at first but when we found out the reason for that it didn’t bother me at all. i did feel that the reveal about it was a tad bit abrupt, but do i care?? not at all<33 and the reason for me not caring is oliviarhys just taking over my heart along with the found family they developed that i felt appalled at the thought of giving them anything below a five✨✨

all in all it might not be fully perfect objectively but subjectively it was perfect to me. i’d kill for oliviarhys and their found family. they bring out so many feelings out of me i can’t help but love them. i am completely obsessed and will need 384839 business days to recover from the emotional turmoil they put me in that i cannot stop thinking about them🩵🩷

Sitting here trying to figure out how to write this review and give the book the justice it deserves. This isn't one of those books that is going to be a little guilty pleasure read or a fun book you enjoyed to pass the time. This is one of those books that has an emotional story with a purpose. This book has characters that develop beyond the first few pages. It has backgrounds that set the stage for MORE, and it has complex emotional connections that make you actually slow down and pay attention when you're reading. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a fabulous written book.

Not Made to Last is about love and loss, but also healing.  It's about the true meaning of family. I don't know of any other author that has me always "checking the time" the way Jay McLean does. From wondering when I could read more to should I slow down...it is time to pause?  If I read it fast, will I know what is next..or should i just savor each moment???  It's amazing that an author can have you conflicted that you want to know the story so bad, yet you want to stall time to feel all words and small moments at the same time.  I feel like this is a truly crazy way to talk about this book. But I just felt the whole story truly was beautiful, and people also need to know that it's written to latch onto your heart. Not Made to Last will have the readers thinking and feeling. This is what Jay McLean  does each time she releases a book. She delivers. I hope that this review conveys how wonderful this book for me truly was.

Not a bad story, but horribly confusing. It jumps around in different timelines in a really confusing way that makes it hard to follow which timeline you are in because it seems like the characters' ages never match up correctly. And at several points I was absolutely sure I was missing chapters because the changes were so abrupt, I was sure I was missing key information.

I don't understand how this book has such high ratings. 3 stars is generous

Yep she did it again. This author always takes me on an emotional journey… and she did not disappoint AGAIN. She took a minute but as I traveled down this telling I saw her “why” and was impressed with how she set the stage for all that is revealed. Eek.

Sooo yes, I had to devour this book. I needed to find all the missing pieces to this story. If you are looking for a romance that tackles hard hitting topics but at the foundation is about resiliency this is the book for you. Ummm peppered into it is some naughty bits too. Wink wink. Can you say, SEXY. Sooo good.

I love these characters. Olivia and Rhys backstories definitely caused some waterworks. The injustices of life are explored in this telling but it also shows creating a community of people who have your back is what will get you through.

The mental health component of this book is done in a beautiful but authentic way. Anxiety, depression, abuse, and more all have a place here. Truthfully, we all have challenges and I always appreciate a book that shows and defines strength.

Plan for the end of this story to leave you with a big tease. Ugh sooo cruel. I pray for a few more stories from sideline characters. You will know of at least one after you turn the last page but I am greedy and want all. Whisper… Oscar, I need your story, don’t make me wait too long. Hee hee.

Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

Well this was a mess. A big one.
I was tempted to DNF but held off because it’s Jay. This felt all over the place, very choppy, no flow, weird chapter endings, trauma galore for the sake of I guess shocking the readers with just brushing it off as an aftermath…It felt like it had potential at the beginning but execution was just wrong.
Very insta lovey and physical at the beginning just to continue without them being apart almost the rest of the book.
I’m sad to say but I think Jay’s not for me anymore. This one just totally missed the mark for me.

P.S. I seriously think she should cut down on the usage of ‘liquid’ anything. Liquid pain, liquid darkness, liquid this, liquid that…let’s just stick to tears after mentioning it once.

I read a book 10 years ago. I fell in love with that book and the author. I stalked her and made her become my friend. It was the best years of my 30s. Life happened and I stopped reading and I distanced myself from the book world.

9 years later, I read a book. I feel fell in love with that book. It
Consumed me. It was epically beautiful and tragic and heartbreakingly perfect. I cried and I laughed and I squealed.

This book felt like everything all at once. Jay McLean is back and she’s better than ever. I see the growth and the maturity but the witty snarky funny as fuck Jay is still there. Her writing is everything all at once.

DNF

I found it disappointing that this book missed the mark, especially since it started off so promising. The pacing felt off at a certain point, making me feel like I had missed a chapter and never managed to catch up, eventually losing interest. For me, the decline began around Chapter 23, and despite initially trying to persevere due to its strong start, I eventually gave up at 43%. Oh, well.
