📚 "Assessing the Gap: Artisanal Gold Miners and Social Services" 📌 The social insurance is an unarguably essential consideration of a sustainable workplace and responsible labor practices in ASM. However, the current social insurance services are not feasible for artisanal miners, making artisanal miners more susceptible to economic and social insecurities. Although there is a range of social insurance services available, artisanal miners are insufficiently benefitting from them, mainly due to factors in affordability and appropriateness dimensions. 📌 On the one hand, because of the informality and seasonality of ASM, artisanal miners face several affordability challenges and have been failing to be insured. On the other hand, certain aspects of the social insurance system should be improved with consideration of the different needs and realities of the artisanal miners and the different features of the ASM. 📌 Ultimately, all these intertwined aspects led to a lack of social insurance coverage and accessibility issues among artisanal miners. 📣 planetGOLD MONGOLIA PROJECT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING ORGANIZED   📌 The seventh meeting of the planetGOLD Mongolia Project Steering Committee (PSC) was held on January 28, 2025, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.   ✅ The meeting was chaired by Mr. Enkhmunkh Ganbold, Director of Environmental Policy Implementation Department of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) of Mongolia and was attended by the PSC member representatives from the MECC, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resource, the Bank of Mongolia, the Mongolian Artisanal and Small-scale Mining Federation, the Artisanal Gold Council, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).   ✅ At the meeting, planetGOLD Mongolia project team reported on its activities in 2024, presented the 2025 workplan and informed progress of the project indicators and targets.   ✅ As the project is ending in 2025, the members of the PSC were also informed on the Project Exit Strategy and its implementation.   📌 The members considered the issue of mining land required to officially launch the mercury-free processing systems in Mandal soum, Selenge province, and emphasized the importance of collaborating with the local government to ensure this key outcome of the project.   ✅ The meeting successfully concluded with the PSC agreeing the 2024 activity was satisfactory and approved the 2025 work plan incorporating the recommendations provided by the members. #MakeMercuryHistory planetGOLD Global Environment Facility UN Environment Programme UNIDO UNIDO Environment Artisanal Gold Council Artisanal and Small Scale Mining National Federation of Mongolia

📌 Silica exposure in artisanal gold mining The prolonged inhalation of dust during drilling, mineral extraction, ore crushing and milling in the mining sector causes fine silica to be deposited in lungs. These deposits cause irritation of the lungs (pneumonitis) and development of scar tissues (lesions, nodules and fibroids), which in turn cause obstruction of the airways. To support miners and MFPS staff, the project is developing a suite of comprehensive materials, including equipment manuals, operating procedures, maintenance guidelines, safety instructions, and inspection checklists. ✅ These resources aim to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the MFPS, empowering artisanal and small-scale miners with the tools and knowledge needed to operate responsibly and effectively.
