Penalty Kill is a college hockey romance with a playboy hero who gets a second chance with the girl he never got over.
Van
I have one final season at Bainbridge University to show the scouts what I’ve got before I shoot my shot as a free agent and try to make it in the pros.
The only thing standing between me and the hockey career I’ve worked my ass off for is the class schedule straight out of my nightmares.
There’s no way I’m passing these courses. But if I fail, I can kiss my future goodbye.
The only hope I have is the tutor Coach had assigned to me.
She’s perfect. A dream come true. The answer to my prayers.
And she’s also my ex.
Josie
I’ve spent three years avoiding Beckett Vandaele III. If he turns left, I take a right. If he’s at the coffee shop, I find another place to study.
But when his name lands on my tutoring roster, there’s nowhere for me to run.
I can’t hide from the secrets I’ve kept, and I can’t pretend Van doesn’t exist.
It won’t be so bad, at least that’s what I tell myself. I’ll treat this like any other tutoring job—I’ll be professional and detached.
Except it doesn’t happen that way. Van’s just as irresistible now as he was when we were freshmen. It’s too easy to fall back in love with him, and I know from experience that only leads to heartache.

Penalty Kill is the second book in the Bainbridge U Hockey series, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. If you love cocky heroes with a vulnerable side, smart-as-hell heroines, and lots of steam, get ready to fall in love with Van and Josie.
This story had me from page one and I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it!! This is the second to the series and it was so good! I loved Van and his insta love for Josie was so well done. Josie definitely pulled at your heart strings and she was such a strong FMC. The side characters were wonderful and I can’t wait for the next one!
Rating: 4.5/5 🌟 Spice: 2.5/5 🌶️ Characters: Van and Josie
This was my first-time reading Andi's writing, but I'll absolutely be going back to read their backlist. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Van and Josie meet during freshman year in college but end up going their separate ways for a few different reasons. Now it's three years later and they are back in each other's orbit. Van is struggling with his grades (he has dyslexia) and his coach lines up a tutor for him. That tutor is his ex, Josie. It's their second chance to come clean about the secrets they kept from one another and more forward.
I absolutely loved Van. I loved that his struggles were shown and worked on. And I really loved how hard he fell for Josie. Josie was such a strong female lead. She had a lot on her plate, taking care of her siblings after they lost her parents. Her family provided a few laughs that had me chuckling out loud while reading as well, which I did not expect.
This had lots of heart and emotion, plenty of angst, great tension and chemistry and steam, and two characters I really liked. I can't wait to read more by Andi!
I have a love/cry relationship with second chance romances and this one just had me hooked. I just wanted to hug Josie and Van. I was just rooting for them the whole time.
Andi also had me falling in love with their individual journeys. The healing and peace that Josie found resonated with me as an eldest daughter. The confidence that Van developed was hard won. Their ending, together and individually, made me so happy.

Thank you to Andi and Wordsmith Publicity for sharing this eARC with me. 🫶🏼
Been waiting patiently for Josie and Van’s story after reading the previous book. You can’t help but wonder what happened to these two and why they aren’t together anymore. And now we finally got an answer. Freshmen year these two met and instantly connected. But the two of them dating only lasted a little while before things broke and the two couldn’t look at the other without pain. Both keeping secrets about themselves and both too young to know much about relationships. So they spent the next three years doing their best to avoid one another. But truth is, the two of them were very much in love with the other. And moving was never so simple. But when Van’s grades are slipping and threatening his hockey career, he finds himself assigned to one of the best tutors: Josie. Now they’ll have to face their past in order to get their futures back on track. And maybe just maybe they can finally solve the issues between them. I loved Van and Josie. Neither of these two have had it easy. And it’s sad that they waited so long to just communicate about how they feel and what was going on with them. Josie lost her parents and her older brother and her became the parents essentially for their many younger siblings. They work hard to provide for their siblings and raise them. And it isn’t always easy. Meanwhile, Van has a pretty rough learning disability, and no matter how hard he tries, it isn’t always easy to figure out solutions to his classes. And one thing he wants more than anything is just to finish college and get to the pros. These two just deserve to be happy and get everything they want. And it was sweet to watch them fall in love again. The book also had just so many funny moments between them and the famous hockey house where Van lives with his teammates. A really fun hockey college book! And you don’t want to miss this latest story in the series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I fell in love with Beckett Vandaele III (aka Van) in the prologue with one of the cutest declarations of love that I've ever read in a book. Seriously. This guy is adorable. This book isn't just sweet though.
Van and Josie had just a brief relationship before they broke each other's hearts. Now, three years later, Van needs a tutor to help him get his grades up so that he can pursue his dream of a professional hockey career. Josie needs tutoring hours to keep her graduation and her own dreams on track. So, they need each other, but this arrangement won't be easy since they may still want each other too.
This college hockey romance really does have it all. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with all of these characters. Both Josie's and Van's individual stories broke my heart. As a couple, they had me cheering so hard for them to make their second chance last. The secondary characters here play such a big part in this story. Josie's younger siblings had me laughing out loud, and everyone deserves friends like Van's and Josie's.
This is the second book in this series, but it can totally be read as a standalone. I personally haven't read the first book yet, but I'll be fixing that as soon as possible. Andi Burns is a new-to-me author, and this book has made me a fan. I can't wait to read more.
This book ticked so many boxes for me and I knew I just had to read it. Right from the beginning I fell right into the story. I just needed to know what was going to happen next, and also what had happened in the past as to why Van & Josie were no longer together. And thankfully, Andi does go from past to present so everything does get revealed. Mostly to me the reason why they split up when they were freshman was because of their youth. They were both too young to articulate what they were feeling and more importantly what they wanted. So with them both now being seniors, they are not only older but of course wiser. The issues they had in the past might to a certain extent still be there, but they could now work through them together. This obviously doesn’t happen straight away, and it was so wonderful to read them fight to be together. Even though there is a time when I honestly didn’t think that they would make it, but as this is a romance novel I was quietly confident that they would. Will definitely be wanting to read the next book as I can’t wait to find out who the h turns out to be.
Penalty Kill brought the emotion between Van and Josie full force! Seriously so good and so cute!
Penalty Kill is a second chance, hockey romance that has the perfect balance of steamy and sweet! Immediately I love Josie and her family! Such a sweet and caring character. Van is so lovable and steamy! These two definitely fit together and deserve each other no matter the struggles. This book is filled with steamy scenes and comedic shenanigans! Definitely a great read for anyone!
I love reading Andi Burns books simply for the fun of them. The characters she creates are all lovable and so entertaining! Penalty Kill is such a great read, I definitely recommend it for others. Great standalone!
Van was a freshman when he spent one night with a girl he knew he would marry. However, their relationship only lasted a month or two. Now in his senior year and his grade need to improve to stay on the hockey team. They set him up with a tutor. Josie is basically a genius. She need course credit in tutoring for her library science degree. Josie is tasked with tutor none other than Van. The guy who broke her heart freshman year.
My thought:
I enjoyed Penalty Kill by @authorandiburns
This is my fourth or fifth book by Andi Burns and it did not disappoint. The chemistry between Van and Josie is still there even after all this time. She is the one that got away and so is he. The communication that was lacking the first time they were together is fixed this time. They work together to help Van overcome all his learning disabilities. I really liked how Josie not only tutored him but learned what he needed to actually understand the material. She really took the time to see Van. This was one of my favorite parts of the book. Josie's younger sibling though had me laughing every time they were involved.
I look forward to reading more from Andi Burn.
Thank you @andiburn and @wordsmithpublicity for the ARC.
“Penalty Kill” is the second book in Andi Burns’ Bainbridge Hockey series, and it’s Van and Josie’s story.
I thought that the second chance trope was very well done in this book. Van and Josie definitely had a lot to work through, but I was rooting for them the whole time!
I loved Van and Josie, both as a couple and as individuals. They were both complex characters, and there was some very nice character development happening throughout the book as well.
Van and Josie were so fun to read about! There was some angst involved, but this book was also funny and lighthearted. I’m loving the Bainbridge Hockey series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This book was fabulous!! Van and Josie with shared emotional roller coaster feelings, banter, lots of spice, top-tier writing. Their lines crossed, and to rectify them will be the ultimate test. Privacy and stubbornness are qualities they both bring to the table. When they’re spicy, they’re SPiCY!! *chefs kiss* Some of the best parts are the shared challenges. At the end of the day, the same rules apply to reach their endgame. ‘The toughest challenges bring the greatest rewards .’-Matt Fox
*book quotes *
✨If I'm ever lucky enough to get my lips on Josie again, it won't be chaste or sweet. It won't be a kiss goodbye. It will be the start of something I never want to end. ✨Never told me the whole story. I'm sure she's got her reasons, but it's clear that I fell harder, that I wanted more.
5⭐️ 3/spicy Recommend to everyone ,especially those who love 🏒hockey romance 🏒second chance 🏒new adult 🏒jock/tutor 🏒spicy 🏒the one that got away Anxiously waiting for Norris’s book!! This was an ARC I received for my honest review.
Penalty Kill by Andi Burns, is the second book in the Bainbridge Hockey Series, Josephine “Josie” Reynolds is a shy, quiet girl, very intelligent and always between books, she lost her parents when she was younger and along with her older brother, Levi, took care of their younger siblings, Zane, the twins Tillie and Milo and little Iris. Josie is about to graduate from Bainbridge University, this means being able to return home and help with her siblings permanently and thus fulfill the promise she made to her older brother and so he can dedicate full time to pursuing his dream with music. When classes start, she realizes that she has a small problem with her schedule and two of the subjects that are necessary to graduate soon, she will only be able to see one and it would delay his graduation, looking for a solution with her academic coordinator, the University will give her the opportunity to cover the credits by giving some tutoring, except that her peaceful world will change when she find out who is the student she have to help. Beckett Vandaele “Van”, is a handsome, friendly, talkative, charming boy and a talented hockey player, who is about to graduate and with his sights set on being selected by the scouts and going to play in the league and earn the life playing the sport he loves, but in order to play and for the scouts to see what he is capable of, Van must raise his academic average, which at the moment is failing, so the Dean and his coach manage to schedule some tutoring sessions for him. He is supposed to help him overcome this bad streak, but the tutor is none other than his ex-girlfriend. At first they both would like to avoid the situation, but the reality is that they need this opportunity to achieve their goals. In the past their relationship was ideal, but it ended in pain due to the bad combination of Josie's omissions plus Van's insecurities. Now, in order to work together and get Van to raise his grades, they must be honest and try to leave their past behind. For this, both must open up to each other, and in Van's case, be completely honest with Josie about the real reason for his complications with the study. But when they manage to overcome many of these obstacles and begin to meet again, there are many questions about what could be, since both have very different dreams for the future, but before they can ask themselves, fate will throw them a definitive test that they must face or just let go of this relationship once and for all. I LOVE this story! I'm delighted with these characters and although I cried and laughed in equal measure, I completely fell in love with them and their stories. Josie's brothers and sisters are completely adorable and left a smile on my face with every interaction and Van and the guys on the Hockey team are perfect! Truly, each part of this book is full of a lot of feeling and you will not be able to avoid falling prey to its lines and, like me, I assure you, you will be betting on the happy ending of these characters. A story with the perfect mix of drama, angst, tears, laughter, camaraderie, tenderness, passion and love. I'm in love with this group of characters and I will be waiting patiently for the story of Norris and the mysterious girl. Totally, Completely and Absolutely Highly Recommended! *Thanks to Andi Burns and Wordsmith Publicity for my ARC. I voluntarily leave my honest review*
¡Total, Completa y Absolutamente Altamente Recomendado! *Gracias a Andi Burns y a Wordsmith Publicity por mi ARC. Dejo voluntariamente mi reseña honesta*
Andi Burns has delivered another fabulous addition to the Bainbridge Hockey series. PENALTY KILL, book #2, is an emotional, second chance hockey romance which hit me right in my heart. As usual her words flowed effortlessly, the romance blending perfectly with the amusing banter, heartfelt moments, and the hilarious escapades of the boys in the hockey house. From the Prologue to the Epilogue, I was held captive by this wonderful story.
Since the death of her parents Josie Reynolds' life hasn't been easy, but she's determined to earn her degree and work in the local library, her dream job. When a needed class is cancelled it leaves her short on credits to pass. Fortunately, the Dean produces a solution, Josie can tutor to gain the credits she needs, and she is happy to take on that role. Beckett "Van" Vandaele is facing the possibility of being benched from the hockey team due to his slipping grades. He needs a tutor urgently and luckily one has just become available. It sounds like a win/win situation, until it isn't. Josie and Van were a couple during Freshman year and haven't spoken since. The other problem is they still have feelings for each other.
Josie and Van travel an emotional and heartfelt journey throughout this book. There are many highs and lows, secrets are revealed, struggles to be overcome, and hearts to be healed. I loved that Van fell hard and fast again for Josie, he never recovered from losing her and this time he's determined to win her heart and keep her in his life. I admired Josie for her strength, the love she has for her family, and her ability to not give her heart straight away to Van. The chemistry between them is palpable, sparks constantly flying and that they take their time before rushing their relationship, it showed the maturity they gained over the time they were apart. When that step is taken ... they are HOT!. Nothing is easy though and they have a rocky road to travel.
PENALTY KILL covered themes which were handled with beautiful sensitivity. Van's struggles and frustration with his learning difficulty and Josie's commitment to her family were delivered with perfect empathy. Then there is the extreme opposite with the comedic tones used when the hockey players are up to their antics, especially in the kitchen at the hockey house. Andi Burns has delivered a wonderful college romance in which she brought out all the feels and had me cheering out loud for a HEA. An absolute MUST READ.
This book is the second in the Bainbridge Hockey series by Andi Burns and follows college hockey player Beckett "Van" Vandaele and star student Josie Reynolds.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Steam: 🌶️🌶️.5 📚 Second Chance 🏒 Opposites attract 📚 Tutor x Jock 🏒 Learning Disability rep 📚 Hilarious teammates 🏒"You want me to make you a pretty mess?" 📚 Her family is everything 🏒 He fell first, but she fell harder 📚 Secret stolen shirts 🏒 He takes her glasses off when she falls asleep
Josie needs to graduate in the Spring. She needs her dream job, and she needs to keep a promise. Only the last class she needs to fulfill her library degree is canceled. So when the Dean offers her a chance at fulfilling credits via tutoring, she jumps at the chance. The only problem is the student in need is Bainbridge hockey star Van, whose grades start precariously slipping. It's an ideal situation; she gets to graduate and he can stop from being benched. Well, it would be if they weren't exes—and if they weren't still secretly harboring feelings for one another.
I loved Josie and Van. Their relationship, and the reasoning for its initial failure, were so real and you can really feel the right person, wrong time aspect of their story. Having them come back together years later after they'd matured was the right move.
Both Josie and Van, and both their individual and couple struggles, gripped me from the first chapter. They were both such driven characters and truly gave it their all and they love hard. Special shout-out to Van's teammates/housemates and Josie's family for their special brand of hilariously wonderful chaos.
I am once again so pleased to see another author spotlight a learning disability so realistically and from both perspectives. Seeing Van's self-deprecating thoughts was gut-wrenching, but Josie's determination to help and have Van succeed was so uplifting.
All in all, Andi Burns scored with this one. With a perfect blend of heart and humor, Penalty Kill is a delightful second chance hockey romance that will leave you smiling.
Favorite Quote: "Trust me, Jos, hockey might take me to far off places, but it will never take me from you."

Penalty Kill by Andi Burns is the captivating second book in the Bainbridge Hockey series and spotlights Van, the wonderful hockey playboy, and Josie, the one girl he never managed to forget. that lives up to its enticing synopsis, delivering a story of second chances, heartache, and undeniable chemistry.
From the very first prologue, Van and Josie’s story grips you with its intensity and emotional depth, drawing you into a world where young love is tested by misunderstandings and time. Three years ago, their budding romance was derailed by one event, leaving both of them nursing wounds that never quite healed. Now, fate has given them another shot, and the result is a beautifully addictive second-chance romance.
Van and Josie light up every page with their sizzling chemistry. The weight of their past and the challenges they face add an extra layer of poignancy to their journey, making their story as heartfelt as it is gripping. One particularly memorable scene involving the library edging showcases Ms Burns' knack for blending steamy romance with moments of banter and tenderness.
The vibrant cast of supporting characters, especially the hockey team, infuses the storyline with humor and camaraderie. Mickey, with his mischievous antics, stands out as a scene-stealer, providing comic relief and giving his teammates and coach plenty of sleepless nights. The banter among the hockey guys not only adds depth to the story but also paints a believable picture of college life, filled with pranks, late-night laughs, and unbreakable bonds.
As secrets are unveiled and old misunderstandings are cleared, the tension builds, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Andi Burns masterfully navigates the ups and downs of Van and Josie's relationship, culminating in a glorious happily-ever-after that feels both earned and exhilarating.
In "Penalty Kill," Andi Burns has crafted a moving and brilliantly executed romance that will linger in your heart long after you’ve turned the last page. This heartfelt tale of love lost and found again, family and friendship is a testament to the power of second chances and the enduring strength of true love.
🏒 Second Chance Romance 🏒 Sports Romance 🏒 College Romance
Josie Caring, supporting and understanding
Van Determined, insecure and caring
Emotional, heartfelt story
This emotional story follows Van and Josie and their way into their second chance at love and happiness. Three years ago they were something and that could have been the real big deal, but a misunderstanding between two insecure and anxious students broke them apart. Van needs a tutor to be able to play hockey at Bainbridge U. But for more than one reason not everyone can and will do. When coincidence brings him his very smart and very ex into his life again that is bound to bring him more than he hoped for. Josie needs this tutoring job to be able to graduate as planned at the end of the semester. For more reasons than just to graduate. When this job brings Van, the one who broke her heart, into her life again, that might be more than she just was afraid of. Tragic past, a personal issue and a life changing accident will keep you reading and wanting to know what’s next. Both characters have their secrets, which caused their first break up, and a real bad communication. Josie sometimes can’t find the words and Van is too impatient to get them or get them right. But three years apart helped them to work on that, only just a little. And there are still both their anxieties. Clearly they support each other and care, but the deep rooted fears and experiences aren’t something that simply goes away. Both were able to grow together throughout the book and work through most of it, but their way was rocky. But that made the story so real and relatable. Wonderful characters with flaws but big hearts, sweet additional side characters and appreciated performances from characters from previous books.
Penalty Kill was my first Andi Burns novel but definitely not the last. And I have to say that Josie and Van's story pulled me in from the start and I was rooting for them till the last page . Van's insta love for Josie was so sweet and I was swooning and wasn't ashamed of it . And Josie was so sweet and caring . Both of them had their insecurities and vulnerabilities and that's the main reason for their break up. But now they are back together in each others lives. Josie needs extra credits to graduate early and to nail her dream job and to take care of her younger siblings. Van needs tutoring in order to graduate. And you guessed it right, Josie is tutoring Van . And he's definitely going to do everything right this time . Starting with an apology and explaining his situation . Josie was so great at accepting Van's situation and finding ways to help him out. And Van was putting in the hard work to overcome his limitations. He was so good at winning Josie back and gaining her trust again. Van and Josie were so good together and perfect for each other. But that slow burn was killing me and I couldn't love it more when they got back together. But that drama in Van's life nearly ended then for a second time. But this time their support system was great . And Van got his chance to explain himself and to get a fresh start with Josie. Have to say that I loved Josie's siblings but the twins were hilarious. Josie and Van got their happily ever after. And that epilogue got me laughing out loud. And now I want more of Bainbridge Hockey . And Mel and Will's story is ready for reading on my kindle for a while and now is just the right time for it . That way I'll be occupied while waiting for the next story in the series.
Thanks to the author and WordSmith Publicity for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.
Seppy's 5-Star Review: Van and Josie met during freshman year in college but broke up due to secrets and misunderstandings that were never cleared up. Now 3 years later, they are forced back into each other orbit. They can't run in the opposite direction now. Van needs help with his classes because he is on the verge of being benched because of his grades. Van's old tutor graduated and he thought he'd be ok without a tutor his senior year. He was wrong. Van has a pretty severe case of dyslexia so he needs help. Josie has a scheduling conflict that might cause her not to graduate on time. The dean offered her to tutor Van and get class credit. The problem is Van is her ex-boyfriend whom she has been avoiding like the plague since they broke up. Josie had something happen tragically 5 years ago and she has more responsibilities than a normal college student. Can these two get through tutoring without running in the opposite direction? What happens when these two actually clear the air about what happened leading to their break up?
I loved Van and Josie. These two are complete opposites but they just click when they are being honest with each other. Both have things that they feel insecure about and this is what leads to their troubles. When you're in a relationship sometimes you have to show your weakness to each other. I did want to smack Josie towards the end for being so blind. She is so smart but lets her insecurities take over. I loved these two and loved how everything turned out. It was a great read that I enjoyed reading.
4.5 rounded up to 5 just for how much fun I had reading it!
Van is in danger of losing his spot on the team if he can't keep his grades up. He's managed to survive his classes for the last three years thanks to a teammate, but since they've graduated, his academics have tanked. Enter Josie. A scheduling conflict has left her in danger of not graduating on time, and the remaining credits she needs are hers if she tutors a fellow student. It should be a win-win, but what if your sure thing is the one that got away?
Read this if you like: -Jock/Tutor -Second Chance Romance/The One that Got Away -Right Person, Wrong Time -He Falls First and He Falls Hard (like wicked hard) -Sweet Boy, Dirty Mouth
This book had me hooked from the first paragraph. Second-chance romances can be a little tricky, but Andi Burns pulled off a near perfect one with Penalty Kill. Van and Josie were Freshman sweethearts and are meeting again as Seniors. This gap has given both of them time to mature and reflect, and I could see that in the way their characters were written. Van fell hard. So hard that it took him a little time to get his head on straight. I was rooting for them from the first tutoring session.
Van's struggles felt so personal. I saw a lot of what I went through in school in his character. All of it was so well written too.
If you like hockey romance, or you are looking to get into hockey romance, I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you to Andi Burns and the team at Wordsmith Publishing for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was such a great book and I really loved it. It takes place at college, senior year and Van is a star hockey player. But he also has a learning disability and so his grades are really bad. He needs help and he ends up matched with his ex girlfriend, Josie.
Josie is in her senior year and cannot wait to graduate. If everything goes as planned she has a job waiting in her small town. So when a class she needs to graduate is cut she ends up as a tutor and her ex boyfriend is her tutoree.
This book was so not what I expected in so many ways. First Van is a really awesome guy with a great mom, a crappy dad and a bad learning disability. He loved Josie a lot when they met but she had a lot of secrets from him and she couldn't let him in.
Josie fell hard for Van but she really was not ready for love. Her parents both had just died and her and her older brother and her siblings guardians and take care of them. From rides to meeting with teachers. She had a lot of responsibility and pain and was just trying to survive each day.
When Van and Josie start spending time together again, they get their second chance.... Will the past stand in their way or can they open their hearts to each other? Well, you will have to read this awesome book. I really loved it so much.
Penalty Kill by Andi Burns ⭐️5/5 🥰The One That Got Away 🥰Jock/Tutor 🥰Second Chance 🥰Hockey
This was my first ever Andi Burns Book and let me tell you she has me hooked. I cannot wait to read more. She had me hooked from the first chapter.
Van and Josie met freshman year. The chemistry was so strong between the two of them. Their relationship was moving fast and they couldn’t get enough of each other. Until one miscommunication tore them apart. Breaking them apart.
Van is struggling with his grades. He has dyslexia and Coach wants to keep him in the game so his Coach lines up a tutor for him. Of all the people on campus he did not see it being his Ex, Josie. However, he can’t wait. He hasn’t been able to get Josie off his mind since they broke up.
Josie has been avoiding Van since they broke up. Happily keeping to her side and him on his side. She hasn’t forgotten about him but she works really hard to try and forget him. A situation with one of her classes causes her to possibly not be able to graduate on time. Due to family issues though she needs to graduate and the only way to fix the situation is if she tutors Van.
This Second Chance will leave your heart broken and then put right back together again. It was such a sweet read that you won’t be able to put it down.
PENALTY KILL- Bain-bridge Hockey # 2 Well it’s official this series really does just keep getting better.and better . After reading Scoring Chance book 1 in this absolutely amazing series ; I actually found myself thinking ( There Is No Way Anything Can Possibly beat this !!! Well I was wrong because Penalty Kill just might be favorite so far . Something about Josie and Van just Sucked me right in From the very first page . Maybe it was the undeniable chemistry they shared , maybe it was the witty banter and the moments that were truly heartbreaking and sometimes heart felt . All I can say is that they grabbed onto my heart so quickly and I was a goner falling hook line and sinker in love . This is not your typical feel good sports romance, in fact there are moments that really will tug at your heart strings in ways you won’t even expect. No really . I went through so many different feelings all at once - everything from being speechless one second to screaming outta frustration the next , I also smiled , laughed and cried . What never wavered was how invested I found myself in both Van ( who bas so many different layers and Josie who has her own struggles ) and yes I rooted so freaking hard the entire way through. 💜💜💜
Ok but the way I loved Van and Josie. This series needs so much more hype. Andi’s writing flows so well and it’s just easy to read and so funny.
Van and Josie dated briefly, and they were both head over heels. But they are young and dumb and break up over some miscommunication, and they avoid each other for 3 years, until she is assigned to be his tutor. And then… well, you know. Some ups and downs and sexy time in the library, but these two finally get their HEA.
I don’t know which character I loved more of these two. Van is the definition of he fall first and hard and I love it. I also loved that Andi shows his struggles with dyslexia and the effects such a diagnosis has on someone’s self worth.
Josie is amazingly mature, and the way she takes care of her siblings was everything. No one should have to experience a tragedy like her family did, and it speaks volumes that, despite being a kid herself when her parents died, she and her brother step up to keep the family together. And man does that crew provide the laughs!
I’ve truly loved both books and the Christmas novella in this series! Can’t wait for Norris and his mystery girl next!!
"This book ticked so many boxes for me and I knew I just had to read it. Will definitely be wanting to read the next book as I can’t wait to find out who the h turns out to be."
Josie Reynolds and Beckett Vandaele III "Van" met in their freshman year of college and hit it off until miscommunication, secrets they didn't bother sharing with each other tore them apart. They spent the next 3 years avoiding each other on campus.
Van is a starter on the hockey team and needs to keep his grades up to graduate and hopefully go pro. He has a learning disability that he doesn't share with people. In his senior year his class schedule is a hard one and without a tutor his chances of graduating are slim. His coach has a tutor lined up for him but it's his ex.
Josie has had it rough the last 5 years or so family wise. She needs a class to graduate and the only option is the one coach has set up for her to tutor his player. When she finds out it's Van she wants to turn it down but she can't so she'll treat it like any other tutor job.
They can't avoid each other now. They still have chemistry and love each other but can they get past it all? Will they finally open up to each other and share their secrets?
This book is the second in the Bainbridge Hockey series by Andi Burns and follows college hockey player Beckett "Van" Vandaele and star student Josie Reynolds.
They meet in college and have an instant connection but Van messes things up and they go their separate ways until he needs a tutor and she needs the credits to graduate.
She has moved on but he regret every word he said and how he acted during their miscommunication. They fall back into place until he is gets injured and says more dumb things to her.
I love this sweet college sports romance. I read this as a standalone in the series and had no problem following along.
📚 Second Chance 🏒 Librarian vibes 📚 Tutor x Jock 🏒 Hockey Romance 📚 Tutor x Jock 🏒 Learning Disability rep 📚 Hilarious teammates 🏒"You want me to make you a pretty mess?" 📚 Her family is everything 🏒 He fell first, but she fell harder 📚 Secret stolen shirts 🏒 He takes her glasses off when she falls asleep
A sweet but complicated hockey romance…that I truly enjoyed! Van and Josie dated for a while and it ended…it broke both of their hearts. Unfortunately they were not truly honest with each other about what was going on with their lives. Because these two young adults have a heck of a lot going on in their lives. Van is a college hockey player who is struggling with his classes and needs a tutor. Josie has a crazy family situation going on and needs to graduate college as soon as possible to help her family out. When she agrees to tutor Van things get even more complicated….in the best possible way. These two can only stay away from each other for so long…because they belong together. They have a strong pull that can’t be denied. This is a well written quick read that I did Not want to put down. I loved these characters sooo much and enjoyed the journey they went on. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Penalty Kill is a college hockey romance with a playboy hero who gets a second chance with the girl he never got over.
I really enjoy this book!! I'm definitely still in my hockey era and this had all the great vibes found in a sports romance. The MMC, Van is a cocky hockey player who has a sweet vulnerable side. He fell and fell hard for the sweet, devoted, and wicked smart Josie. Josie the FMC was dealt a sad and devastating blow at a young age. But even still she is sweet, loving and fun person who is just trying to get through college and take care of her family.
Overall this book had all the things I want... a wonderful story that kept you invested, depth in characters, fun side characters and the chemistry between these two was explosive.
The spice was definitely spicing!!
I high recommend you checking this one out and I can't wait to read more from this author!!!
Tropes: Second Chance • Hockey player vs tutor • Fun and cute siblings Spice Galore

I was so excited to see another book join the Bainbridge series! I loved book 1 and book 2 hit the mark as well.
This book was sweet, swoony, heart wrenching and whew the spice had me cheering on the FMC “get it girl”! I love the camaraderie with these hockey guys, the “one that got away” vibes and the scenes that had me pausing because I was so pleasantly surprised!
Our hockey hero Van was obsessed with Josie before he even truly knew her name. But he also gave us a real glimpse at the struggles of learning disabilities. Josie is well loved, though an introvert striving to be a librarian. They’re shoved together when they both find themselves in a pickle with the school system. But Josie has a packed schedule taking care of her family, and we see the strength, maturity and devotion she carries.
These two just needed a push and some growing up to be in the right place to embrace their love story. But don’t worry…you’ll also get plenty of laughs from the shenanigans with the hockey house and little siblings! The side characters were *chef’s kiss*.
Where are my hockey girlies?! Definitely check out Bainbridge series for your next read!
Love isn’t easy and when emotions are high and fear is plaguing you, decisions will be made and hearts will get hurt. That’s exactly what happened to Van and Josie. They were hot and heavy fast because they fit in a way that neither could explain, but their relationship ended just as fast as it started. When life throws them together again both have to learn to swallow their pride and find a way to make it work.
For me I love Andi’s books because they are relatable and realistic. When you’re young and in love the world and its possibilities are endless. Communication isn’t always the best and sometimes fear can take over which is exactly what happens to these two. They have to decide if they can be a better version of themselves to find what they once had again and if love is worth it.
Josie my goodness this woman is a warrior. Her story is so much more than I thought and man I wanted to jump into the book and hold her. Even though she’s faced so much pain, she’s a pillar of strength and I loved seeing her grow and speak up for herself.
Van is a big burly hockey player but deep down he’s a cuddly teddy bear who just wants to find his place and beside Josie is where he’s been the happiest. I absolutely love seeing him break down her walls and growing because he had so much to overcome and prove.
A very emotional, angst romance that I couldn’t put down!
