Dr. Jack Resneck Jr., Chair of the WMA Declaration of Helsinki workgroup explains the relevance of the Declaration of Helsinki and why is it being revised. He also speaks to the overarching themes of the changes with this 2024 revision and to some specific changes that stand out from the 2024 revision. The Declaration of Helsinki came into being 60 years ago, in 1964, to protect all people from unethical human medical experimentation. It is a high-level ethical principles document intended to provide guidance on human participant research. Now, at 60 years old, the Declaration of Helsinki remains pivotal in safeguarding human rights in medical research worldwide. The substantive changes to the Declaration of Helsinki can be categorised in two areas:

Participant-centered inclusion, respect and protection, including recognition of participant vulnerability, calls for community engagement, pursuit of global justice, obtaining informed consent, and use of participant-centered language.
Research beneficence and value, including the pursuit of “individual and public health”, upholding scientific rigor and integrity, and considered distribution of benefits, risks and burdens.
