The World Medical Association (WMA) is an international organization representing physicians.
About us
The World Medical Association (WMA) is an international organization representing physicians. It was founded on 17 September 1947, when physicians from 27 different countries met at the First General Assembly of the WMA in Paris. The organization was created to ensure the independence of physicians, and to work for the highest possible standards of ethical behaviour and care by physicians, at all times. This was particularly important to physicians after the Second World War, and therefore the WMA has always been an independent confederation of free professional associations. WMA represents 115 National Medical Associations and constituent members and 10 million physicians. At the 229th WMA Council Session, Uruguay's Minister of Public Health, Ms Cristina Lustemberg shared the country's achievements and challenges in healthcare. Uruguay's National Integrated Health System, established 18 years ago, continues to provide universal coverage with a focus on equity, quality, and sustainability. While progress has been made, mental health—particularly the rising suicide rate and physician burnout—remains a key focus. The Minister highlighted the need for a more collaborative healthcare workforce, emphasizing stronger relationships between physicians and nurses. She conveyed solidarity with healthcare professionals in conflict zones and expressed hope for the formal adoption of the global pandemic agreement. #GlobalHealth #MedicalEthics
