The World Medical Association condemns the use of riot control agents by Turkish authorities against peaceful protesters, following the arrest of Istanbul's mayor. These agents cause severe health issues for protesters, bystanders, and medical staff, including respiratory distress and psychological trauma. The WMA urges Turkish authorities to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for those affected. At the 229th WMA Council Session, Uruguay's Minister of Public Health, Ms Cristina Lustemberg shared the country's achievements and challenges in healthcare. Uruguay's National Integrated Health System, established 18 years ago, continues to provide universal coverage with a focus on equity, quality, and sustainability. While progress has been made, mental health—particularly the rising suicide rate and physician burnout—remains a key focus. The Minister highlighted the need for a more collaborative healthcare workforce, emphasizing stronger relationships between physicians and nurses. She conveyed solidarity with healthcare professionals in conflict zones and expressed hope for the formal adoption of the global pandemic agreement. #GlobalHealth #MedicalEthics
