It’s true what they say, you really are wiser when you’re older, because I’ve hated my younger self for years. After leaving behind the girl that I spent my entire life loving from afar, younger me deserves the hate, though. But when her dad told me I was ruining her life, I let my own insecurities consume me and knew I had to set her free.
Now, I’m a defenseman for the New England Bay Sharks, living my dream. At least, that’s what everyone thinks. Inside, I’m haunted by past mistakes, wishing I had a clock to turn back time and right my wrongs.
Just as I lose hope that she’s ever coming back, she shows up in Portland, bruised and battered—claiming she was in a car accident. She isn’t the same strong-willed girl with the bright eyes she was before. No, replacing that girl is a woman in pain. A woman who’s scared. And a woman who really hates my guts.
Right away, I knew there was no car accident. No…those bruises were put on her perfect body by a monster. One that was supposed to care for and love her till the end of time.
Worried for her safety, I craft a plan to keep her safe. One that includes her living in my house while pretending to be my girlfriend. After what I did to her all those years ago, I’ll do anything to earn her forgiveness.
I may have promised her that it’s all for show and that I have no motive for wanting to keep her so close, but the truth is…I never stopped wanting her, and that’s not about to change now.
Hannah Gray spends her days in vacationland, living in a small, quaint town on the coast of Maine. She is an avid reader of contemporary romance and is always in competition with herself to read more books every year.
During the day, she loves on her three perfect-to-her daughters and tries to be the best mom she can be. But once she tucks them in at night--okay, scratch that. Once they fall asleep next to her in her bed--because their bedrooms apparently have monsters in them--she dives into her own fantasy world, staying awake well into the late-night hours, typing away stories about her characters. As much as she loves being a wife and mom--and she certainly does love it--reading and writing are her outlet, giving her a place to travel far away while still physically being with her family.
She married her better half in 2013, and he's been putting up with her craziness every day since. As her anchor, he's her one constant in this insane, forever-changing world.
Ohhhh boy, where do I even start? 😮💨 This book had me ready to fight air. I went in expecting the emotional depth, the heartache, the tension—because come on, second-chance romance with a fake dating angle? Sign me up! But instead, I got a book that skipped all the important parts and replaced them with endless smut and a heroine who had the common sense of a wet sock. 😵💫
Let’s talk about Gemma. I wanted to root for her. I really did. She’s a survivor of abuse, and I expected to see a powerful healing journey. But honestly, she seemed to just... go with the flow. 😐 It felt like she let everyone around her make her choices. Her dad tells her to forget Smith? She does. 😑 Her fiancé tells her to drop out of school? Done. Stop driving? Sure. 😵 Like, I get that she’s going through a lot, but it was hard to see her grow when she didn’t seem to stand up for herself much.
Now, Smith? He was actually decent. 😮💨 He made mistakes, but his reasoning wasn’t completely ridiculous. He was just trying to do what he thought was right. But did Gemma even TRY to understand his side? Not really. 🙃 She got caught up in her feelings and didn’t really take the time to hear him out. It felt a bit frustrating, especially since it was clear Smith was trying.
And don’t even get me started on the plot… or should I say, the lack of one. 🫠 The book focuses so much on sex, sex, sex that all the important moments just get skipped. 😩 The Sharks win the Stanley Cup? We don’t see it. The trial against her ex? Barely mentioned. Her working with a domestic violence advocate? Conveniently off-page. 🤦♀️ What we DO get is pages and pages of Gemma suddenly turning into a bedroom expert, which made me wonder if I had skipped a whole part of her character development. 🤨
And can we please talk about that teaser for the next book? THE DRAMA. 🤡Saylor’s ex leaks the tape. Her new guy, Ryder, still sleeps with her after seeing it. Then her ex tells her Ryder only did it because of the tape… AND SHE BELIEVES HIM?!?!?WITHOUT EVEN ASKING RYDER?!?!?I actually need to lie down. 😵💫
Look, I loved the first two books in this series, but this one was a disaster. If you’re thinking of picking it up… don’t. 🚩 Spare yourself the headache. 😵💫
This book broke me in the best ways. Look I am a Hannah Gray Stan, and have read every word she has written. This woman NEVER disappoints! She writes in a way that is emotional and angsty but blended perfectly with spice and sweetness. Her characters live in my mind rent free on a daily basis, and this book is no different!
And Smith and Gemma are actual perfection. It’s hurt and comfort and reuniting with your true love and I ATE up every single word.
✨ Hockey Romance ✨ Second Chance ✨ Trauma Recovery ✨ Forced Proximity ✨ Fake Dating ✨ Best Friend’s Brother
TW: abuse/ DV
Look this book deals with hard subjects as Gemma has escaped an abuse ex and ended up back in the orbit of Smith Sawyer, the hockey player who broke her heart when they were young. But it’s also a story of healing, for fighting for a love that’s still there, and a man that knows he’s never letting this woman go again.
Smith is perfection. Just absolute perfection I. The way he gives Gemma exactly what she needs and puts her first. This man, he is going in my book boyfriend hall of fame.
And Gemma, I loved her strength and resilience and her capacity to forgive. I just loved her, and I saw what so many woman go through in her struggles.
This book made me bawl like a baby (as Hannah always does) and then put me back together again. Also she calls him baby boy and at that point I think as deceased. A puddle on the floor.
"All these years later, and still, Smith Sawyer has the ability to get under my skin and make my heart feel like it’s under attack."
This book was such a page turner! Gemma & Smith's story took me down an emotional rollercoaster and the chemistry between them was undeniably strong! The whole part about how Gemma grew out of her trauma and slowly healed felt raw and real. I liked how Smith was so patient and helped her navigate the situation. The hockey element was also strong and all the side characters were wholesome, especially Saylor & Paige! The support all of them provided Gemma was heartwarming and I liked how the romance was not rushed either. Gemma's story was heartbreaking and I found myself crying for her in some parts, so I liked how her healing process was dealt with in the book. And Smith was just the best man ever! His character development was great and the relationship development between both of them was perfect! Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and I'm very excited for the next ones in this series because so far, every book has been impressive!
"I've known her since I was eight years old and spent my whole life admiring her. All the time in the world could have passed, and I'd still know her better than I know anyone else."
When I finished Shoot Your Shot, I was so eager to dive into Smith and Gemma's story! I just knew it was going to be an emotional rollercoaster, and I braced myself for the journey. Reading their story was definitely a heavy experience—I cried a few times—but it was all worth it when they finally found their happy ending!
Smith and Gemma have known each other since they were kids, and they started dating in high school. But then something happened that made Smith leave Gemma without a word. Fast forward six years, and Gemma returns with visible wounds, both inside and out. Smith can tell right away that she's been through something terrible, and he is determined to help her heal and rediscover her old self.
My heart just broke for Gemma as I read about her struggles. I felt every bit of her pain, sadness, despair, and fear, and I just wanted to give her a big hug! I was so proud of her when she realized she needed to focus on loving herself before she could be in a relationship with Smith. It was a tough journey, and yes, I cried a few times, but it was incredibly empowering to see Gemma take control of her life.
"You deserve the world, Firefly. And someday soon, I promise you, you will remember that."
Smith's love for her never wavered. He knew he wasn’t going to let her slip away again. It was heartwarming to see how patient and understanding he was as he gave her the space and time she needed to heal. He respected her decisions and supported her in reclaiming her life. There were moments when he felt helpless, which made him even more relatable and real.
The character development for both Smith and Gemma was just amazing! I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. They truly deserve their happy ending, and I was thrilled when they finally got it. Their journey was filled with heartfelt moments, emotions, sweetness, and beauty. The friendship and found family aspects added such a warm touch to the story. And that sneak peek for the next couple has me buzzing with excitement for the next book!
"I promise I'm going to be better for you. I'll be everything you deserve." "You're already enough, Gem. You will always be enough."
4.5 ⭐️ What a beautiful story I was blown away by this one! Not only was Hannah’s writing absolutely stunning it also centred around forgiveness, a tough yet healing journey and second chances. I was so emotional from start to finish of this book, the love that Smith and Gemma had for each other was otherworldly and I’m so happy they got to heal together and get their second chance.
“I meant what I said; I will stay for as long as she’ll let me. And when the day comes when she wants to leave, I’m going to beg her to stay.”
Gemma’s story and trauma was so incredibly heartbreaking I lost track of how many times I cried but watching her heal and learn to trust and let Smith in again was so heartwarming and beautiful. Hannah handled these sensitive topics extremely well and with a lot of care and sensitivity.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and now cannot wait to go back and read the first two in the series. This was the first book of Hannah’s I read and it will not be the last. Thank you so much to @wordsmithpublicity and Hannah for the arc, I highly recommend this book.

I have fangirled over Hannah Gray and her writing since I read the first book in her New England Bay Sharks series and I have since raved about and recommended them to all my romance reading friends. I screamed in delight when this ARC landed on my kindle and like the previous two books, devoured this in under 24 hours. Hannah writes incredibly real and relatable characters with such perfect precision - they are full of angst and heartbreak at times but she patches our hearts right back together with a perfect compliment of romance and spice. This is a great combination of second chance romance and forced proximity (plus several other to die for tropes!). I loved Gemma’s journey in this book, loved Smith’s patience and possessiveness and absolutely adored the found family of the Bay Sharks team. I felt so many emotions reading this story and easily could have read two hundred pages more. I’m absolutely eagerly awaiting the next book!
Thank you Wordsmith Publicity for the ARC and opportunity to review this book!!
Warning: I had a few personal connections to this story and Gemma as a character, so I might have a bias, but I am so grateful for Hannah Gray and this raw and vulnerable story of love, second chances, and healing after you feel like you’ve been shattered.
❤️🩹 Best friend’s brother ❤️🩹 Hockey player MMC ❤️🩹 Second chance romance ❤️🩹 FMC on the run ❤️🩹 Forced proximity ❤️🩹 Found family ❤️🩹 Fake dating
📖: Gemma and Smith were high school sweethearts, but are forced apart. Fast forward 6 years, and Gemma finds herself on the run from her ex and has to stay with Smith for a period of time.
❤️🩹 I really appreciate the way Hannah Gray approached Gemma’s healing. From the support Smith lent, to her need to be in control, and the fact that her healing wasn’t “perfect” from a clinical perspective. I felt so seen with multiple aspects of her realistic journey and really related to the way Smith helped love her out of the darkness.
💕 The found family aspect in this series is so beautiful. The way the other wives brought Gemma into the fold and gave her a girl group to talk and vent and have FUN when that was taken away from her before?? Loved.
🐾 I literally cannot even talk about Storm without crying. We don’t deserve dogs. That’s all.
🌶️ as far as the spice goes, Hannah Gray never disappoints in this realm. For me, I loved that the spice always furthered their second chance connection or Gemma’s healing. It was both hot and purposeful and I loved the slow burn buildup. That hotel scene??? 🥵👔 so good.
Again, I cannot say enough what this story meant to me. I am so appreciative for Hannah Gray’s approach to this. The metaphors for healing, the realistic and non-linear journey. It’s clear the author took a lot of care with this sensitive subject and wanted to do the story and characters justice.
‼️TLDR : This is an incredibly emotional and at times heartbreaking story of second chances, healing, and learning to love who you are today and trying to find a past version of yourself.
⚠️ Lots of sensitive subjects are discussed in this story, so please read the author’s TW before reading. (On page DV retellings and healing from DV). This was a very healing story for me, but it may not be for you. Always take care of yourself first.
Thank you so much to Hannah Gray and Wordsmith Publicity for the arc of Fool Me Once in exchange for my honest review. It was an honor to be part of this release 🖤.
Rating: 5/5 🌟 Spice: 2.5/5 🌶️ Characters: Gemma and Smith
Hannah truly never misses for me. Gemma and Smith were together at 17 with big plans for their future together. Unfortunately, something happens that makes Smith leave her without saying goodbye and ending their relationship. Because Gemma has always been best friends with Smith's sister, they end up in each other's orbit again years later. Gemma is running from her abusive ex-fiancé and ends up staying with her best friend, Saylor (Smith's sister). When Saylor gets a job that leads her out of the state Gemma ends up having to stay with Smith. Because of the way things ended she wants to hate him and because of what she's been through she's timid, nervous, lost her confidence, and slow to trust. Smith sees this as his second chance, and he's determined to show her that they were always meant to be together.
This is an emotional journey of healing and finding yourself again after being beaten down physically and emotionally. Gemma went through a lot and came out feeling like a shell of her former self. She needed time, stability, and patience. And Smith delivered all of that and more. He was truly the perfect hero. He gave her what she needed while also giving in when she made demands. And she absolutely made demands (hehe). It's a slow burn in all areas but once Gemma lets Smith back in, they absolutely burn. Their chemistry is crazy, the steam is immaculate, and their love is soulmate level.
I loved these two and was so happy they got their second chance and much deserved HEA.
You know what Hannah Gray does well? Tackling tough subjects/topics in books. Fool Me Once is just another perfect example of Hannah incorporating a topic into a plot in the most beautiful way. In this book, the topic of domestic violence is discussed so if that is a trigger for you please go into this one with caution. But the way that Hannah wrote Gemma's experience and story was so beautiful!
I was so excited to read this book because at the end of Shoot Your Shot, we got a little snippet of what was to come with Smith and Gemma and let me tell you something, this book did not disappoint! Our girl Gemma is on the run from her ex fiancé. Why is she on the run? Because her fiancé is an abuser and she finally got the courage to leave and she ran right to her best friend Saylor, who happens to be Smith's younger sister. Smith and Gemma have a past but in true male fashion, Smith ruined what they had but now after six years, he's willing to risk it all for another chance.
What I loved the most about this book is how Smith was not going to stop at anything to make Gemma his. But part of that is helping her overcome the abuse she endured. He created such a safe space for her. Everything he did was so intentional. And the one thing that he gave back to her was her control. That was the most beautiful thing about this book! Ugh, I just loved everything about this one and honestly at this point, I don't think Hannah can write a book that I don't love.
You should most definitely read this book if you like: - Hockey Romance - Second Chance Romance - Best Friend's Brother/Sibling's Best Friend - Heroine On The Run - Roommates to Lovers - Fake Dating - Who Hurt You?
* I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Hannah Gray and Wordsmith Publicity for allowing me to read Fool Me Once as an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.
A huge fan of Hannah Gray, but this one just wasn’t my cup of tea.
I was hugely disappointed after finishing this story as someone who has survived DV. I felt disconnected from both characters after enjoying the first two books in the series. The spice to plot seemed a little unbalanced in the second half of the book
The lack of emotional depth made it hard for me to resonate with the book. There was little focus on healing and trust-building in my eyes, especially for the FMC. The romance came across more as physical attraction, and frankly some intimacy scenes made me feel extremely uncomfortable as it came across Sawyer is enabling Gemma.
Excited for the rest of the series, but this one is a miss for me.
Fool Me Once by: Hannah Gray 10/10 stars 2.5 spice
even if Hannah stopped writing books tomorrow I would be so sad, but, I would still be so grateful she has written the ones she did because she truly writes the most real and emotional books I've read. Fool Me Once is no different.. freaking so good.
Smith Sawyer is a big freaking deal in the NHL, but once upon a time he was just a kid living next door to his sisters best friend that they met when he was only 8 years old. He knew from the moment he laid eyes on Gemma she was his. His to love, his to take care of, and most of all his to protect- even if that meant breaking her heart and leaving in the process.
Flash Forward 6 years and nothing has changed. Gemma is still his to love, still his to take care of and most importantly his to protect.. he just has to convince her he did what he did for a reason, and that he will be there for her - EVERY. STEP. OF. THE. WAY.
Gemma Jones has been living with a monster for far too long. When her situation gets worse and she finally decides to leave its no surprise she ends up with her best friend.. who just happens to be the sisters to the guy shes been in love with since she was 7. Being back around Smith isn't easy for her. He hurt her, and left her... and honestly, if he wouldn't have left her, she wouldn't have lived her life with the worst human possible. When it's apparent she has no other options but, to rely on him, the feelings she tired so hard to push down are pushing their way out.
even though that is true, Gemma has to love herself again before she can love anyone else. even Smith Sawyer..
thank you Hannah and Wordsmith for the opportunity to read and review! tropes: -Hockey -DV survivor -sisters bestfriend -its always been you
What a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL book about second chances, forgiveness and a rough yet real journey towards healing Hannah Gray wrote 🥺❤️🩹. Gemma and Smith have loved each other since they were children. When they finally found the courage to be together as teenagers, Gemma’s father put a wrench in their relationship, forcing Smith to let her go so that she could follow her own dreams and not live in Smith’s shadow who was on the way to college and the NHL. Both Smith and her father thought they set her free… what they did was cause her depression, weight loss and pushing her into the arms of the first man who told her he loved her… a man who turned out to be her abuser for years 😭. When she finally breaks free, Smith is determined to do everything in his power to protect her, help her heal, giving her back the power she lost and of course, forgive him and let him back in. Smith also suffered from their six years long separation, never forgetting her, no relationships for him, only meaningless hook ups with faceless women who he ran away from the moment the deed was done. And when he saw what his and her father’s actions caused Gemma, he worked on himself and changed. He became the man Gemma would need to find herself again and I loved him to pieces for that. Hannah Gray has a way to dabble with tough topics, but always in such a respectful way. If you haven’t tried her books yet, please do! They will break your heart but also heal it and make you feel hopeful.
Thank you to Wordsmith Publicity and Hannah Gray for the eARC 🫶🏻🩷
If Hannah Gray writes it, I'm going to read it. Seriously, I'm consistently blown away by her books. I devoured this one. I don't know her secret, but she creates these characters I just instantly fall in love with, and the stories are so engaging. I'm OBSESSED with Gemma and Smith. They deserve all the happiness. I loved watching their story unfold. What's so great about Hannah Gray is that she tackles tough subjects, but she does it in such a realistic and heartwarming way. Thank goodness her books are done in dual POV because I live for getting inside the characters' heads, and Hannah Gray nails it. You can't help but connect with these characters and feel invested in their lives. This book delivered all the feels, taking me on an emotional rollercoaster. This whole series has been a five-star read for me, and this book is amazing. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go impatiently wait for the next one.
Thank you Hannah Gray and Wordsmith Publicity for an ARC of this must read book. I voluntarily read it and gave an honest review.
Gemma crossed over the best friend's brother line with Smith right before he headed off to college and left her heart broken. Years later Gemma comes home searching for a safe haven from her abusive fiancé.
Embarrassed and utterly broken Gemma tries to hide the extent of her physical and mental scars, but Smith sees through the act and works to tear down the defenses that Gemma has in place. Not only is Smith trying to get her to trust him after suffering at the hands of someone she loved, he also has to earn her trust after breaking her heart all those years ago.
I absolutely love the way Smith helped to heal Gemma. As with all healing journeys it's important to be patient and never push. He allowed her to take her time and open up when she was ready and take the necessary steps to move forward on her time. He helped her find things that made her feel safe and take control again, and he was there for her every step of the way.
TRIGGER WARNING: This book is heavy on the DV theme; both escaping the abuse and the healing journey after the trauma. As a DV survivor I think this was handled very well and though everyone's healing process is different I felt like this was a pretty accurate depiction of a journey one might be on.

This is the third book in this amazing series and this is Smith and Gemma’s story. These two were sweethearts until Smith left breaking both their hearts. Smith is now the defenseman for the New England Bay Sharks, and when Gemma turns up battered and bruised, Smith knows that walking away from her was a mistake. This is a well written emotional roller coaster story, which has family, friendships, heartbreak, regrets, angst, humor, witty banter, second chances, romance, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, spicy, tragic, and unpredictable addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
THIS BOOK!!! 😭😭😭 Hannah simply CANNOT write a bad book & you can’t convince me otherwise 😌 The emotional journey, the angst, the romance, the character dynamic, the spice, the found family, everything about this book was *chef’s kiss* 🫶🏻
Smith is top tier book boyfriend material. This man was everything Gemma needed him to be and the patience & care he had with her had me absolutely swooning. He made sure to give Gemma space to heal but also made sure she knew she was it for him & he wasn’t going to let her get a way a second time 🤩
I loved Gemma so much. Her strength was incredible, she endured & overcame so much and watching her journey of healing, of forgiveness was truly incredible. Easily one of my favorite FMCs 🫶🏻
Truly loving this series so far & I can’t wait to see what Hannah has next for us! 🖤
Tropes: - Hockey romance - Second chance - Heroine on the run - Forced proximity - Fake dating - Slow burn - Found family - Who hurt you?
Another win of a hockey romance. I’ll always pick up everything Hannah Gray writes, they’re always the best. This one wasn’t as steamy as her previous books. So just know that going in if that’s what you’re looking for. This series has been touching some heavier topics than her other series, which I love. She writes them so beautifully. It’s incredible Fool Me Once incorporated some of my favorite tropes: roommates to lovers, best friend’s brother, and second chance romance
Thank you Wordsmith Publicity for sending this my way!
Hannah Gray writes yet another amazing book for us! Hockey romance Fake dating Brothers best friend Who hurt you? Second chance love, you will be rooting for them through reading this.
You get a patient, protective, cinnamon roll MMC with Smith. He cares so deeply for Gemma.
Gemma has been through so much and she is in need of some tender love and care which Smith provides
I love that he helps her regain her self worth and confidence! Truly a fantastic read!
I swear I fall for every one of Hannah Gray’s MMCs. Smith and Gemma were young and in love, envisioning a future together until Gemma’s father pressured Smith to leave. Years later, Gemma returns, and Smith discovers that her ex was abusive. Determined to protect her, he does everything in his power to keep her safe. Though he’s never stopped loving her, Gemma was left heartbroken and struggles to trust again. As they navigate their complicated past, Gemma must also heal from her trauma. This is a powerful story of second chances and resilience. It's definitely one you don't want to miss.
Thank you, Hannah Gray and Wordsmith Publicity the ARC.
Hannah Gray once again was able to make me feel so many deep emotions with this amazing second chance romance.
Gemma and Smith’s story grabbed my heart and didn’t let go! From the highest highs to the lowest lows, their story tackled all the hard things so beautifully. We get to witness character growth from both of them. Gemma’s brought me to tears. The work she did to overcome her trauma and regain her power had me in awe. And the way Smith was by her side the whole time was chef’s kiss. With ups and downs along the way, their journey back to each other was what reeled me in and made me fall in love with them. I might just have a new favourite Shark after this one!
The New England Bay Sharks series has been nothing short of amazing so far and I cannot wait to see what comes next!
I absolutely recommend this book! As always, please check the triggers.
I would like to thank Hannah Gray and Wordsmith Publicity for the opportunity to read and review Fool Me Once.
Another book where Hannah absolutely blew me away. I seriously can't believe how freaking amazing this series has been. Not only are these character's so amazing, but Hannah's writing has grown so much. I'm truly in awe.
Nobody deserves their second chance more than these two. I love them so freaking much and was rooting for them the whole time. This story was emotional, heartbreaking, healing, and everything in between. I truly loved that this story really focused on Gemma and highlighted her struggles as a domestic abuse survivor. Her feelings were very raw and real, and I genuinely wanted to just squeeze her.
Smith is truly the most patient MMC I've read. He's such a cinnamon roll for Gemma and would do anything to show how much he loves her. He's protective and caring in all the best ways. He really is the standard for all men... so take notes.
Hannah, you continue to blow me away with this series and your amazing writing. I have never loved a group of characters more than the Bay Sharks (and that's saying a lot because I am a Puck Boys girlie for life). But these character's truly have some amazing and important stories to tell.
I cannot wait for Ryder... I already know these two are going to be trouble.

♥️MY THOUGHTS: Fool Me Once is my favorite of the series so far. I mean.. have you seen that trope list?! Gemma and Smith’s story is something to be cherished. It was one of the most beautiful yet tragic loves I’ve read.
Gemma. Beautifully broken, Gemma. You were the standout of this book. You overcame abuse, tragedy, betrayal, and mind-numbing fear. You worked on yourself so that you could learn to love yourself again. You let Smith back in by realizing that he only wants to see you soar. You are the epitome of strength. You are a warrior.
And Smith. You are patient, protective, honorable, & fiercely loyal. You gave everything you had to ensure Gemma was safe and comfortable. At 18 years old, you were given a tough hand, but you never gave up hope; you never forgot about the girl across the road.
Gemma and Smith’s love was all consuming. It was everything you could dream of and more. Oh, and that spiceeeee 🌶️ That hotel scene was TOP TIER.
Another relationship from the book that I adored was Gemma and Storm. Storm was Gemma’s soul dog; they were meant to find each other. Just two fractured beings, held together by each other.
Thank you Hannah for thoroughly breaking me. And putting me back together. I will never recover from the story of Gemma and Smith.
The Sharks are back babyyy! 🦈 I have been soo dang excited for this one! I wanted Gemma’s story as soon as we met her in Kolt’s book! And let me tell you Smith and Gemma didn’t disappoint!! These two made me laugh, swoon, cry and sweat. (iykyk)
Smith. My sweet sweet boy. This man literally has been in love with Gemma since he was 18 and hasn’t loved anyone since. But when Gemma stumbles back into town with some cuts and bruises on her face Smith is never letting her go again. I loved how possessive he was over learning why Gemma was back and loved how he was willing to do anything to make sure she never left. This man was so gentle and sweet and praised the ground Gemma walked on.
Gemma. Our sweet girl. Oh man has she been through it. This girl was left at the age of 17 by her first love just to walk into the arms of a monster who beats her. She has had it ROUGH. But when she runs back home to hide she runs into the very last person she wants to see, Smith. Wanting nothing to do with him she learns she has to move in with him to stay hidden and well as you could imagine, things escalate. I loved how our girl takes back her control and Smith is more than happy to let her. (iykyk) Our girl gets back her confidence and her first love and it is so dang sweet. I loved watched Gemma become her old self again and to walk tall even with her tragic past. So dang proud of her!
These two were so sweet and so god dang spicy. Let just say Gemma takes back her control and confidence while Smith is her “good boy” 🥵 good gawd almighty! And the mouth on Smith. I die. Every word out of that man’s mouth. 🫠
I will say please check your trigger warnings, there isn’t domestic violence in flashbacks and retellings. Please please don’t come on her and bash this book because you have a trigger to this subject.
I am so excited for Ryder’s book! It’s gonna be a good one, but let’s be honest all of Hannah’s books are pure gold!

Gemma Jones is a survivor. After fleeing from her abusive fiancé, she’s back in her home state of Maine determined to fight her demons & start over. Being back in Maine means being close to her parents & best friend, Saylor again. Along with Saylor, comes her brother Smith—the only man Gemma has ever truly loved. Years ago, Smith walked away before they ever had a chance, & Gemma is not sure she can ever forgive him for that. When Saylor takes an assignment out of state, and Gemma is left alone, it’s no surprise that Smith’s hero complex kicks in, & he gives her no other option but to stay with him. 🫣 Gemma has been alone for a long time and she’s terrified of Smith seeing her demons, but one of the only places she’s ever felt safe & happy is in Smith’s arms. Now, he’s determined to prove he’s not letting her go again.
Smith Sawyer appears to have it all. He’s made a name for himself in the NHL & is the self proclaimed “king of pranks” for his team, the NE Bay Sharks. Beneath the exterior, Smith hides his own demons by drowning himself in the faces of nameless women to forget that the he walked away from the only woman he’ll ever love. Despite doing what he thought was best for her, he lives with regret everyday. When Gemma Jones walks back into Smith’s life looking bruised, battered, & a shell of the lively girl she used to be, Smith is determined to protect her at all cost like he should have done all those years ago…
I truly cannot applaud @authorhannah_gray enough for writing such a poignant and beautiful story that revolves around such a difficult and devastating topic. I captivated by Gemma’s strength & courageousness. I admired her bravery SO much & throughout the story, I was amazed by her personal growth. I adore the way Smith was written in this book as he was the perfect compliment to Gemma. He was protective, patient, and so damn sweet. Hannah was blown me away with the storylines of this series, but she truly outdid herself with this one! 🙌🏽 I will never stop raving about this book, and cannot wait to return to this crew again! 🖤
Also, OBSESSED with the little cameos of familiar faces from the NE University days! I missed them so much!! 🤭

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Hannah’s writing, it’s that she is skilled in ripping your heart out and then putting it back together. That’s exactly what this book will do, but not in the way you think. It’ll rip your heart out for how bad you’re hurting for the characters individually because damn! The emotion in this book was unreal.
I love a good second chance romance and Smith and Gemma were just that. You could just tell these two were meant for each other. I loved learning about their past and seeing how they were able to move forward in the present. The things that Gemma went through were truly unthinkable, but the way she overcame everything, and with Smith right there for her, was so beautiful to read.
Smith would go to the ends of the earth and back for Gemma and would stop at nothing to make sure she was happy. He was patient and soft with her. He was just the most incredible MMC for Gemma. And his bedroom demeanor? Okayyyyy 🔥🔥
Gemma was an incredible FMC. My heart hurt so bad for what she went through, but I loved how she came out on the other side stronger and healed. I really love how she took control in the bedroom and was such a boss b*tch.
I will say, there were some parts that felt a bit rushed for me BUT that did nothing to take away from how much I loved these two and their story. Thank you to Hannah and Wordsmith Publicity for the ARC!
Smith Sawyer is something else. 😏 Hannah just writes better and better MMCs each book!

- second chance - best friend's brother - forced proximity - slow burn
Hannah Gray literally can do no wrong. She takes sensitive subjects and filthy men, puts them together and handles them with grace and creates a hell of a story. Her past 2 books in this series have touched on some pretty heavy and emotional subjects, that unfortunately a lot of people go through on a daily basis. But in my opinion Hannah has handled each with the respect and sensitivity they deserve.
I loved this third installment to the New England Bay Sharks series. Gemma and Smith have such a deep love story, it was amazing. You got all the goosebumps, swoons, gut feelings, and butterflies with these two. They were literally meant to be togther. And nothing was going to stop Smith from making sure they ended up together.
I don't want to go into too much detail on my feelings on Smith and how he handled Gemma's situation because I want new readers to get all the feeling organically and not go in with any influenced feelings or anticipations. But I loved Smith's character so freaking much. He is def top book boyfriend material.
I 1000000% recommend not only reading this book but all of this series. Hannah Gray just keeps delivering. I flew through this book and read it in almost under 24 hours. I simply could not put it down. Thank you to Hannah and Wordsmith Publicity for letting me read this in advanced.
This books was an emotional journey for both Smith and Gemma. The heartbreak, longing and healing was so intense I just wanted to cry at times.
We get to see the real Smith once Gemma returns to his life. He shows us how he has grown and how supportive he is. All he wants is for Gemma to be happy and to have her love him again.
Gemma has been through the wringer. Teenage heartbreak leads her to an abusive relationship she finally gets out of. She’s so broken, she can’t believe that Smith loves her and will support everything she needs to do to heal.
There was some repetitiveness in the book, not that it was in an over abundance, but it was still there. Gemma’s healing journey did seem a little quick, but in saying that healing doesn’t have a set timeline. Loved getting the epilogue, giving us a glimpse into the future of Smith and Gemma’s HEA.

Thank you, Hannah and Wordsmith Publicity for an eARC in exchange of my honest review.
This series is just freaking amazing and every book I just find myself even more sucked into the lives of this hockey team 💙
Smith and Gemma’s story is a second chance and dare I say it enemies lovers 💙 these two fell in love in high school, when lives were much simpler and the outside world couldn’t touch them. That bubble popped quickly and Gemma had to harden her heart to protect it.
As karma would have it though Gemma and Smith end up forced together during a really troubling time for Gemma. The way Smith was able to be there for her even when she continued to shove him away was heart melting. This beefy burly hockey player could soften at his core for Gemma, shower her with love and affection is anyway he could. She has to be strong herself and heal but that doesn’t mean he won’t wait forever for her 💙
The subjects of this book are tough topics but Hannah did a tasteful and considerate job at portraying these touch triggers while still having the understanding of what happened. Check your triggers and read responsibly.
