Against the Wind: A small town romantic suspense (Wayward Sons) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 87 ratings

The last person I expect—or want—to take shelter with as a hurricane descends on Hatterwick Island is Daniel LaRue, the man who broke my heart barely three months ago.

I don't have time for... whatever this is. My medical clinic has been targeted by thieves—hardly a month after returning to my home town. Coming back to the Outer Banks was always the plan after med school, and for a while in residency, I thought I might bring the hot Coast Guardsman with me. Right up until he accepted a new promotion without talking to me.
Turned out he was more of a situationship than anything real.

Except now he’s appeared on my doorstep, declaring he's on the Outer Banks for me, and despite my considerable temper pointed in his direction, he insists on helping me weather the storm. Literally.

Stranded together, we have no choice but to deal with the chemistry still sizzling between us. I can’t deny that he still affects me. But as the hours tick by, I start to realize there’s more to his arrival on the island than he’s telling me—and I long ago learned that the secrets of Hatterwick Island are always dangerous.

Daniel and Gabi are just like the Hurricane they are hunkered down together for. You know it's coming it's fierce and strong but its strength can waver and at times it can be so quiet that it seems it has passed. However it's not truly gone. This Novella and start to a brand new series is a great start. There is romance, a small town, there is an element of danger, new friendships, reconnecting with friends and spending time with family. Our first couple Daniel and Gabi have some serious communication issues thankfully small towns are known to be great support systems and always behind couples finding their happily ever after.I have voluntarily left this review.

I loved this second chance romance with a side of hurricane disaster and mild suspense. The storyline was imaginative, characters relatable and likable, and the writing captivating. It had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and spice. Gabi is a physician who returned to her hometown, Hatterwick Island, after her residency. Unfortunately, her boss is on vacation when a hurricane is going to make landfall and she is the only doctor on the island. Daniel is a Coast Guardman and a drug intradiction investigator who recently transferred to the Nags Head. After screwing up his relationship with Gabi and breaking her heart three months ago, he transferred hoping to get her back. While he’s working on a plan, a hurricane heads for the coast and he is tasked with helping. To find their way back on the journey toward their HEA, they’ll need to unpack some baggage, while riding out a hurricane and dealing with criminals. The story had a good balance of both the mild suspense and romance, each equally important to the flow of the story. I am excited to read the rest of love stories of the Wayward Sons. 4.5 stars.

This was a good novella about Gabi. She's a doctor and back on her home island in NC. In the midst of preparing for a hurricane, her ex shows up. Is he here for her or his Coast Guard job?
Is a novella, so it's a quick read. The story takes place at same time as Willa's did so some crossover plot. Only issue is I wish it was longer.

This little story of Daniel and Gabbi was a nice in between while we wait for the next book in the series. There is an overarching mystery/suspense throughout this series and so you need to keep all the little clues in your box until the mystery is resolved. There is of course a happy ever after and make sure to get the bonus epilogue.
Can be read alone but would highly recommend reading with the earlier books in the series.

Against the Wind by Harper Jackson, a novella within the Wayward Sons series, is a second chance romantic suspense, centering around a small island and its residents as they prepare to be hit by a hurricane. Gabi, currently the only doctor at the clinic, is working crazy hours seeing patients and getting ready for an intense hurricane heading toward Hatterwick. Daniel is with the Coast Guard and it's not a coincidence he is there to help with the hurricane preparation. Daniel realized he made a mistake of epic proportions and is trying to get back in Gabi’s life. Gabi does not know of the sacrifices and changes Daniel made to his life in order to be closer to her and correct his mistake of leaving Gabi without talking first. She was not expecting to end up being stranded with her ex during the storm. Being stuck together forces these two to open up to each other and confront their feelings. Only Daniel is not on the island just to get back in Gabi’s good graces he is also there investigating drug runners

Between the hurricane, and the drug traffickers, the suspense keeps us guessing making the plot engaging. Though not truly a cliffhanger, we are left with some unanswered questions and new discoveries. Now to patiently wait for the next installment of the Wayward Sons

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book prior to purchase.

This has been an exciting series to date and this novella has provided even more potential future story lines. I look forward to Bree and Ford's story. Highly recommended.

Living In Hurricane Country all my life, I could relate to a lot of this book.
It was a great read of second chances for Daniel and Gabi.
They both were dealing with a lot of hard work and then hard work trying to find their way
    back to each other.
Harper has a mesmerizing way of writing and I read it in one sitting. You will love it!!!!

Dr Gabi Carrera has returned to Hatterwick Island after having her heart broken in New Orleans. Now she is helping out a the local medical center but when the head doctor leaves for a vacation and there is an incoming hurricane, she knows she can no longer focus on her broken heart.

Daniel LaRue made a very bad decision 3 months ago and now he has arrived in Hatterwick Island for both his job and to make it right with the woman who’s heart he broke.

This was a novella and a quick read and the first I have read from this author. I think this book made it easy to like the main characters and definitely get involved in the mystery that occurred at the end of the book and also the underlying drug trafficking issue that brought Daniel to town.

Both of these characters were likeable and obviously career driven but ultimately Daniel chose what was most important to him in the end.

I really want to see what happens next and will be going back to see what I missed! - By Rebecca

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. My only complaint was there wasn’t enough of it!!!! 😈

ATW gave us an insight into Gabi’s time off island when she left to attend college. When we catch up with her it’s a few years later and she’s home to work at the local island clinic which was always her plan.
While she was away she met a guy who was a coastguard and for the time they were together she thought this was the real deal with a future, until the day he dropped a bomb and put his career before them! Gabi’s heart is busted and she feels they were more a situationship than a relationship.

Daniel knew he’d messed up pretty much right away - well yeah, the lack of discussion or communication on taking a new post with the gal you’ve been getting serious with was his first misstep…. but he sets about trying to fix things.

He’s the last person Gabi expects to see arrive to help the town get organized before a hurricane hits the island. To say she’s not best pleased would be an understatement.

You would think that Daniel would have leaned from his first mess up with Gabi that communication was key… hey, no!!
He’s there partly to assist hurricane prep but there’s a bigger reason and he doesn’t tell her. Will this pair ever manage to work things out? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ I did enjoy the intrigue that story line brought to the book.

I liked that this novella filled a question I had from Sawyer & Willa’s book. We had seen Gabi and Daniel in that and I was curious about both her being back home and who he was.

HJ gave us a great epilogue extra for this pair that made me way happy as their book kinda finished in a happy for now note.

I’m looking forward to catching up with the couple and the other characters we’ve met so far as the series continues.

Against the Wind is a Novella in the Wayward Sons series. There are two books released already, a prequel and book one, with book two due for release in April. I would highly recommend reading the books in order to get the background and full impact of the intertwined storylines. This is a wonderful series of romantic suspense and I am eagerly awaiting book two!

This book focuses on Hatterwick Island resident Gabi and Coast Guardman Daniel. They have history, but the current story is focused on the imminent arrival of Hurricane Hannah. They are focused ensuring readiness to survive the coming storm, as well as the their turbulent emotions and the potential drug running activities in the area.

For a novella, this book is jam packed with action, mystery and romance. There is plenty of excitement, as well as old mysteries resurfacing and a subtle cliffhanger which leaves us anticipating the next instalment.

Give this series a try, you will not be disappointed!
