Never fall in love with a client. I care deeply for all my patients, but falling in love with one was never a risk. My heart had closed up shop years ago. As the Boston Guardians' in-house therapist, I was perfectly content helping athletes deal with their pain and trauma, happy to see others thrive and overcome life's obstacles. I was content…until I wasn't. Everything changed when a devastating accident shattered the life of the club's star goalie—Caleb Donovan. I was tasked with saving him from his self-sabotaging ways and told to become his beacon of hope and savior in the darkness. How could I have ever predicted that as I delved deeper into the tangled mess of his fractured emotions, I'd find that his broken spirit mirrored mine? That his heart would call out my name in the dark, pulling me in? On the hard, paved road to healing, Caleb changed courses on me, preferring my ruin over his salvation. And now…my career, my reputation, and my very sanity are all in jeopardy. In a world where love can be the ultimate downfall, do I have the courage to risk it all for a glimpse of happiness, or will I succumb to the shadows of guilt and fear that threaten to consume us both?

This is Caleb and Roxie's story. We have met them in previous books, however after the accident with Caleb and his brother Jack, he has a lot to deal with emotionally. All he ever wanted was to lead his team to the Stanley Cup and without his brother by his side he doesn't believe he is worthy and needs help to deal with is emotions and anger.
Roxie is a therapist and is the perfect person to help Caleb. She has gone through a very similar situation and came out the other side.
A big, moody athlete who falls for the sweet, strong minded, totally not his type of girl. I was invested in their dynamic and the attraction they couldn't seem to turn off no matter how much they both tried. This was a great read to end the series.
Jeezus this book was sooo good! It’s full of angst and heartache the kind that hurts ! Definitely grab your tissues and anything else you need for comfort and buckle down because this one is an emotional ride!
"Absolution is only granted to those who deserve it. And that's not me. That will never be me. All I deserve is misery."
Oh my poor Caleb!!! His turn has finally arrived, but his story had the most pain in it!!! After the ending of book 2, I was losing my mind with the turn of events that Ivy had thrown on us!!! I was worrying for the Donovan brothers, cause I have loved them both fiercely and I couldn't imagine the world without one of them in it. My heart couldn't handle it!!! I couldn't bare all this pain and I was cursing Ivy for that twist... But I can assure you now that even though the pain was real and raw, Ivy managed to bring hope back into our hearts!!! Thank God for that!!! This story wasn't an easy one!!! It was full of guilt, grief, regrets and self-sabotaging... but it also brought hope and love!!! Buckle up and trust Caleb to give you the ride of your lives!!!
"There's no doubt in my mind that Caleb Donovan needs an anchor. Someone to pull him back from the rolling tide of pain when it gets too much. The only question is... can I be his anchor?"
After the accident that changed his life, Caleb is not in a good place... He is losing himself slowly and he can not bare to live in a world that his brother is not there to cheer him on or curse him!!! His new norm sucks and he has lost the brightness of the past!!! He feels guilty and he can not deal well with his grief and because of that he is behaving badly and he is jeopartizing his spot as a goalie to the team... He is so close to lose everything, but he can't seem to care enough...
"He needs to break. Because only when he's hit rock bottom will he accept my help to build him back up."
Trent Nichols, the GM of the team, had enough of Caleb Donovan's actions lately and he is forcing him to see a therapist for his own good... Roxanne is the ideal therapist for Caleb, since she had gone through something similar in the past, but Caleb is not making it easy on her to help him... Unfortunately for her, Caleb's soul is speaking to her own, even though their age difference and the status of the relationship... She had never break the rule of falling for a client, she never felt this pull toward someone that she was helping through trauma, but Caleb is making her feel a hot mess all the time...
"Caleb Donovan might have come into my life broken, but if I'm not careful, he'll be the instrument that breaks me."
I liked Caleb and Roxie together.... Caleb was so different here than the previous two books... The silly man child was nowhere to find and we saw him becoming a man with a level head that he knew what he wanted. It is a pity that he had to go through a very rough patch in order to grow up, but he found his ray of hope when he wasn't even looking for it... Roxie had her own share of pain and trauma that was stopping her for embracing life fully. Yep, she was the one who provided help to her patients, but Caleb helped her get out of her shell too!!! I liked these two together very much!!!
"This. This is why there should always be a clear distance between a client and their therapist."
Yep, this story was very emotional in so many levels, but I wouldn't change anything!!! I have loved all the characters in the Puckered Hearts's series, and I am feeling sad that I have to let them go!! I had such a great time reading their adventures!!! And now, I am really hoping for a story about Laurie and Becca.. There was something there and I am very curious about them!!! Please, Ivy??? Tell me that you will give us this story!!!
"Falling in love with Caleb is the one mistake that I would make a million times over."
**I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review**
🏒hockey romance ❤️doctor/patient 🏒he falls first ❤️grief/loss 🏒slow burn ❤️reverse age gap
Penalty to the Heart is the third book in the Puckered Hearts Series and follows Caleb and Roxanne’s story. Caleb is the goalie for the Boston Guardians and Roxanne is the team’s mental health therapist. Although it is a stand alone, I strongly suggest you read the first two books in the series before this one. Not only are they fantastic books, but we get to see both characters in them, so you’ll get a better understanding of who they really are.
I knew going into this book that it was going to be emotional so I thought I was ready. When I tell you I was not. Have the tissue box handy because this book packs all.the.feels. The relationship between Caleb and Roxie was so sweet to watch grow and develop.
I’m trying to be so careful as I write this review as to not give anything away, so let me end with this. This book is amazing. Definitely my favorite one in the series. Is it heartbreaking and full angst? Yes. Is it still worth it to read this book knowing I cried so many times through it my husband asked if I was ok? YES!!!!! Caleb’s journey is pretty much the best thing I’ve read this year. Don’t miss this book!
Thank you to Ivy Fox and Wordsmith Publicity for the ARC of this book.
Caleb and Roxanne’s story…you guys. This was the conclusion to the puckered heart series. But you can read it as a stand alone. This focuses on Caleb, a goalie for the Boston Guardians. Roxanne is a sports psychiatrist who works for the Guardians. Caleb recently has went through something very personal and hit close to home. It’s wrecked him and he has been advised to seek counseling or he’s off the team. Roxanne is all business and no play. She has a sad past that she lets no one know about. When these two damaged people get to know each other during their counseling sessions, feelings start to happen. Not only has Roxie helped Caleb find the light, she has also opened her heart up which she didn’t think would ever happen after her husband tragic past. This story was heavy. But boy it was worth it. That HEA was everything. Dare I say these two have stolen my heart their story was so raw and real and really makes you emotional. So sad to see their story end but boy they deserved that ending. 🥹
Penalty To The Heart is the third book in the Puckered Hearts Series. It is a slow burn, standalone, forbidden, reverse age-gap, hockey romance with a ton of angst, a strong FMC, a MMC who falls first, and a guaranteed HEA.
This book will absolutely bring forth all the emotions! Caleb and Roxie are each dealing with their own inner turmoil and guilt when they find each other. I love the way in which they help each other to heal. The character growth and development is terrific. The storyline is entrancing and had me refusing to put it down.
No spoilers here, but I loved this book and would definitely recommend it.
I knew this book was going to be emotional but I was still shocked by how emotional. Caleb your troublemaker, go lucky, a goalie is now experiencing pain. I was not expecting to be on the edge of an emotional roller-coaster the whole time. This book is amazing and does so well to hit the importance of counseling. Best to go in blind so I'll be as no spoilerish as I can be I loved this book and I cried laughed and cried happy tears through the whole book. I can't wait to see who is next.
Grief works in mysterious ways, but if you open up, you'll sometime find love in unexpected ways. Penalty to the Heart is a slow burn hockey romance between Caleb & Roxanne. The other characters from previous books do get a little showtime in this Penalty to the Heart. It's emotional, sometimes funny, spicy but at the end they do get their long a waited HEA.
Another fantastic book form ivy . As soon as hit my kindle I couldn’t wait to jump in I was hooked . This whole book kept me on the edge of my seat. i was completely eating this story up and loving every minute of it !!!!!!
A medida que la relación avanza, se vuelve evidente que la relación está marcada por la manipulación y la dependencia. La dinámica de poder es inquietante y la falta de equilibrio y respeto mutuo convierte su "amor" en una trampa emocional.
My favourite book in the Puckered Hearts series? Definitely Penalty to the Heart. I immediately fell in love with Roxie and Caleb....they just had this pull about them. They're definitely my favourite (totally my personal opinion and choice) Roxie is this really understanding person who's gone though things. She grew stronger because of them and now can connect better with certain clients(IYKYK, ahem ahem) The way she is all professional, and how she can clearly see Caleb's pain. The way she recognizes it, and that being the basic reason why she accepts his case, just because she knows how it feels. I love how quickly she connects with Caleb, how quickly she also starts to open up to him, how they both form this really sweet, trusting, healthy bond. I love how she cares for all of her clients, how she visits Lenny regularly in the hospital, how she goes to the center to volunteer on a regular basis, how she's helped Nate in his journey as well. The way she knows she's falling for Caleb and can't help it, the way lets go of her past and finally lets Caleb in, the way she let's her walls down whenever it comes to him. Roxie is this person whom I deeply adore....I just am in awe of the way she is. The scene where Caleb is breaking down thinking he's all alone, but she sees him, and then because of that she agrees to be his therapist, because she knows the feeling all too well is the scene I knew that they're story will make me cry. Caleb...oh, Caleb. He's the cutest, the goofiest, the silliest, the most caring, the most broken, the most hurt, the most lovable character I've ever read. We were introduced to Caleb in book one, Perfect Pucking Match, and since then he's been the goofiest, the funniest, the most flirtatious, the party lover. I seriously loved his out-going fun personality and cried so bad when I read the ending of Penalty to the Heart. I totally did not expect that, it hit me harder than I hoped...so, Caleb's book was everything I wanted. Caleb was the funniest character, until the accident. It broke Caleb into so many pieces that he was sure, no one could even get all the pieces together. He's in this constant state of guilt, of anger, of annoyance, of sadness. The way he used to wait until he was alone so that he could cry, the way he made it his daily routine to help Erin in any way, the way he lost himself. Caleb is this character who's lost the sunshine and rainbows, and is instead clouded with darkness who doesn't know how to escape from it, or if he even wants to escape from it. He believes no one can help him and constantly refuses help. When he starts to attend the therapy sessions and try to get under Roxie's skin is when Caleb realises that he can be fixed after all. The way he then actually starts to co-operate with Roxie, the way he'd try his best, the way he slowly fell for Roxie, the way he just realises that maybe he does want to escape from the darkness. The way he starts to care for Roxie, the way sometimes it's him helping out Roxie, the way he goes and helps Lenny just cause Roxie is worried, the way he changes, the way he starts to know what love means. It's so beautiful seeing his transformation, seeing him change for the better, seeing him learn, seeing him commit to Roxie, seeing him fighting for his love. I LOVE LOVE LOVE ROXIE AND CALEB'S RELATIONSHIP. They both are just IT for me.....they both complete each other, they're perfect for each other. I cried so much, I laughed so much, I felt all of it. Penalty to the Heart made me feel it all, and that too straight to the heart. I personally don't think I've read a more beautiful, heart wrenching, perfect love story this month. For anyone looking for a romance journey to make them cry and laugh and then cry some more, Penalty to the Heart it for you. Ivy Fox nailed it and I definitely love other books of her but, this one holds a special place in my heart.
Oh my , I so loved Penalty to the Heart and it totally deserves it's five stars. And my heart aches and breaks for Caleb and his struggles with grief and guilt. And if I didn't been there before and knew it from experience now reading about it I was with Caleb every step of the way. To the bottom of his hurt and grief and getting back to himself. And I think that he needed this time alone by himself so he can grow up to the man he was supposed to be . And it took me a hot minute to get it that the other Donovan brother is still here but hanging in between. So that just added to all the pilling problems on Caleb's shoulders. And that's when they meet with Roxanne. For me she was such a mystery but I'm so glad that she got her second chance. She's smart , career driven and with a big heart even though she thinks that she's finished with love . And her feelings for Caleb got her unprepared . Roxanne so much needed this second chance on love but fights it because it goes against everything she believes in . Caleb and Roxie both went through so much hurt and helped each other heal and make it to the other side. And they both changed . And that opportunity to change and evolve was so needed. Not only for Caleb. Roxanne needed it too because she too has to part with somethings from her past . Loved it how Caleb revealed his loving and caring side not only for his sister in law and his nieces but for Roxanne too. He was so thoughtful and responsible when her career was on the line because of their relationship. And his quest for righting his wrongs was so thoughtful and full of compassion. Slowly Caleb became a better man , friend and teammate . But Caleb in love was something different - thoughtful, selfless, caring and responsible. He's so sweet and swoony but has such a mouth on him. Caleb and Roxanne's happily ever after was so deserved and I loved it how all of the other story lines came to their conclusion almost at the same time as Caleb's transformation reached it logical end . Penalty to the Heart was the perfect end to the Puckered Hearts series . It's intense and emotional in entirely different way from the other books , so prepare yourself for an emotional whirlwind of another type .
Thanks to the author and WordSmith Publicity for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.
↓↓ When we were first introduced to Caleb in Nate's story he was happy, crazy at times and the life of the party but from the ending in the previous book, Power Play Rivals, you just knew this book was going to be heartbreaking. Caleb is shown in such a different light that it's hard to remember that he use to be this happy person.
Caleb is use to his big brother Jack, picking up his messes but now Caleb is left with the mess, grief and guilt after a devastating accident that involved him and his brother. He is spiraling out of control and his team/friends are extremely worried for him. They give him an ultimatum, get help or else.
The way Caleb was so lost and broken was heartbreaking but he showed up everyday for Jack's wife, Erin and his nieces. The way that he was with them you could see that there was still the old Caleb under all the hurt and grief currently on the surface.
Roxanne is no stranger to grief but she has had the ability to move on until Hurricane Caleb comes barreling into her life and brought up old wounds. She has to navigate her growing feelings while also helping him out of his trauma and grief.
Caleb was so hesitant at first but Roxie was able to break through his barriers. She is the perfect match for him, she was able to have him open up and find himself again. They were both so damaged but they ended up helping heal each other.
That ending 😭 that ending was perfection 😍
𝕋𝕣𝕠𝕡𝕖𝕤 / 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕥𝕠 𝔼𝕩𝕡𝕖𝕔𝕥 🏒 Forbidden Romance 🏒 Reverse Age Gap 🏒 Hero Falls First 🏒 Strong heroine 🏒 Tearjerker 🏒 Slow Burn 🏒 And a whole lot of ANGST!
Oh wow, Penalty To The Heart was intense! Caleb and Roxanne's story was an emotional rollercoaster!
The story opens the night that Caleb and his brother Jack -- both players for the Guardians -- get into a horrible car accident. As the older brother, Jack has his stuff together; he's married with a family, steady and responsible. Caleb, meanwhile, is 23 and has yet to grow out of the party boy phase, and his brother often bails him out of trouble. That is how the story opens, with a car accident that changes their lives forever. (I missed #2 in this series, so I missed the lead-up to the car accident, and I wish I had that background.)
A few months later, Caleb is a hot mess as he's dealing with survivor's grief. He blames himself for the accident, and as a result of his downward spiral, he's become a liability for the team. So GM Trent sends him to see the team's in-house therapist, Roxanne. (The same lovely woman who helped Nate break thought his barriers in #1.)
Most of this book is about Caleb's struggle in therapy, but there's a definite spark between him and Roxanne from the very start. Their romance is a super slow burn, and it borders on unprofessional and forbidden since Roxie is technically still his doctor when they begin a personal relationship. That didn't bother me, however, since I felt that these characters were so well matched and understood each other on such a deep level.
Caleb goes through such a huge change in this book! Ivy Fox really did a great job in showing his progression and growth. He's not afraid to be vulnerable, then fight for what he wants when it comes to Roxie. And her backstory is equally as sad, since she is living with a ghost. Caleb is so patient with her, proving that he will take the bits of her heart that she's willing to share with him.
Things work out for the best all around by the end of this story, and I was so happy with the way things turned out!
I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.
I knew this book was going to hit me in all the feels! We fell for the loveable, outgoing goalie in the previous books, and to see him emotionally and mentally do a 180 in this book was so devastating to read. Caleb ends up so broken after a tragedy strikes his family, leaving him in utter distress. He is used to having his big brother there for him, cleaning up all his messes, but when that’s not the case anymore, Caleb spirals. He pushes his teammates and friends away and doesn’t care about anything anymore. He blames himself for the accident and his having a hard time living life. The GM of the hockey team mandates that he go to therapy to sort out his feelings and get some help. Caleb is reluctant to go and is anything but welcoming to the idea. He then meets his infamous therapist, Roxanne, and he starts to feel things he’s never felt before. He isn’t the relationship type, but there is something about Roxanne that makes him want to be a better man. Roxanne takes her job very seriously, being a sports therapist, and she can see how devastated and broken Caleb his. She knows what he’s going through, having gone through tragedy herself and can’t help but feel an emotional connection to Caleb. She usually doesn’t have trouble keeping professional boundaries, but Caleb wiggles his way into her heart. They both helped each other overcome challenges, and their connection grew into something beautiful as the story moved on. Roxanne helped Caleb to see that he wasn’t to blame for the accident and that the person he was, was good enough. Caleb helped Roxanne feel wanted and cherished. She hadn’t felt that in a long time. There was a ten-year age gap between them (she is older), which was noticeable at first with the way Caleb was, but he matured throughout the story. Loved this book and this series!
"Penalty to the Heart," the third installment in the "Puckered Heart" series by Ivy Fox, is an emotional tour de force that grips the heart from the first page to the last. Rarely have I encountered a story so profoundly heart-wrenching, where my tears flowed almost continuously. This book is a masterful exploration of love, pain, and redemption wrapped in a truly unique reverse age-gap romance.
Caleb, our tormented hero, is a character that lingers in your heart long after you turn the final page. His journey through guilt, anger, and vulnerability forms the core of this poignant narrative. Caleb’s raw emotions are beautifully and painfully portrayed, making his struggles and eventual growth incredibly moving.
However, it is Roxanne, our extraordinary leading lady, who elevates this story to unparalleled heights. She is not just a love interest but a beacon of hope and resilience. Having endured her own share of pain, Roxanne is uniquely positioned to guide Caleb out of his self-imposed darkness. Her strength and compassion shine through, making her an indispensable force in Caleb's healing process.
The chemistry between Caleb and Roxanne is electrifying, yet it is their deep emotional connection that truly captivates. The intensity of their bond goes beyond physical attraction, delving into a profound emotional commitment that is both compelling and heartwarming.
"Penalty to the Heart" is a testament to Ivy Fox’s ability to weave a narrative that is both devastatingly emotional and beautifully hopeful. It’s a story that stays with you, resonating long after you’ve finished reading. For anyone seeking a romance that is as deep and transformative as it is passionate, this book is an absolute must-read.
I loved the previous two books in this series, but I knew with the cliffhanger ending of the last one, I was going to have a hard time reading this one. I am really empathic, so I put off reading it for a while because I knew I would bawl my eyes out…and I did. BUT the good news is that there is a very happy ending.
Even though this is technically a reverse age-gap, I liked that it was basically a non-issue in their relationship. I really loved Roxanne, and you could tell the author did her research on the profession. I was grateful of the choices the author made regarding the professional ethics issue because I don’t know that emotions could have handled it if it had played out like I was afraid it would. In fact, there were several plot points where I thought I knew where the story might go, but I was really glad that I was wrong. 😉
Caleb’s journey was painful, and his transformation and healing were bittersweet. But, he came out the other side stronger and a better human being. If I had one minor criticism it would be that I wish we had gotten a better sense of Caleb finding his “true identity.” I know he learned by experience what is important in life, and he definitely “grew up.” But, I would have liked to see more of his distinguishing himself. However, his story is still extremely satisfying.
In the end, I’m so glad I finally worked up the emotional courage to read this book. My only regret is that I wish I had started on a Friday and not a Sunday night because now I have to face the world with my swollen, puffy, and tired eyes from crying and binging this book! I’m looking forward to the next installment, and I *think* I know who the couple will be.
Caleb Donovan is a revelation, and this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance. As the third installment in the Puckered Hearts series, 'Penalty to the Heart' tells the story of Caleb, the goalie for the Boston Guardians, and Roxanne, the team's mental health therapist. While it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the first two books in the series for added context and depth.
What drew me in was the reverse age gap trope, which is expertly executed in this book. Caleb has recently gone through a traumatic experience and is struggling to cope, while Roxanne is a no-nonsense professional with a hidden past. Their counseling sessions are filled with tension and emotional depth, as they slowly open up to each other and learn to heal.
What I loved most about this book was the way Caleb and Roxanne's bond grew organically. They both had to confront their own demons and learn to live again, and it was beautiful to see them support each other through that process. Caleb's transformation from a brooding, grief-stricken man to a thoughtful, caring partner was particularly compelling.
Roxanne's strength and compassion are essential to Caleb's healing, and her character adds depth to the story. I appreciated how Caleb showed his loving and caring side not only to his family but also to Roxanne, being thoughtful and responsible in his interactions with her.
The chemistry between Caleb and Roxanne is undeniable, but it's their emotional connection that truly makes this story shine. Their bond goes beyond physical attraction and delves into a profound emotional commitment that is both captivating and heartwarming.
'Penalty to the Heart' is a testament to Ivy Fox's skill as an author, weaving together a narrative that is both emotionally devastating and beautifully hopeful. This book will stay with you long after you finish reading it, making it an absolute must-read for anyone seeking a romance that is both passionate and transformative.
3.5⭐ Penalty to the Heart is the 3rd book in the Puckered Hearts series of interconnected standalones set around the Boston Guardians professional hockey team. I haven't read the first two books, and I think it's ok, but it definitely would have given me more depth to the character and group dynamics if I had. I really enjoy a slow burn romance, but I was missing some of the building tension I crave in this one. I love the hot glances when he doesn't think she's looking, and the Mr. Darcy hand-flex type moments when he can barely control himself. It always makes the snap when they finally give in so much sweeter. I felt the pacing was a little off in the story. Due to the subject matter, the front two-thirds or so of the book feels so heavy. It's real and it's rough, and rightfully so, but at times it feels laborious getting to the love story. I want to acknowledge that grief is such a tough thing to write because everyone's journey is so different through it though. Once we finally get that pivot point in the story it picks up steam fast. I really enjoyed everything once things start to lighten slightly mood wise. I am still in a fresh grief journey myself, so I do want to concede that my personal frame of mind could certainly be coloring my feelings on the pace of the story. I really do appreciate the depth of the characters. In the end, Caleb and Roxie have a beautiful love story. It's sexy, and meaningful, and hard fought, like all the best ones. Thank you to Wordsmith Publicity and Ivy Fox for the ARC opportunity.
4 ⭐️ Get ready to have your emotions put through the wringer because Penalty to the Heart is one hell of a ride. Ivy Fox delivers an absolutely gut-wrenching, beautifully written story packed with angst, heartbreak, and the kind of character growth that makes you want to stand up and cheer.
Caleb, the Boston Guardians’ star goalie, had it all—until one tragic moment sends his world crashing down. Now, he’s drowning in grief, guilt, and self-destruction, lashing out in ways that push everyone away. Enter Roxanne, the team’s in-house therapist, who’s tasked with pulling Caleb back from the brink. The catch? Their connection is instant, intense, and completely forbidden. But some souls are just meant to find each other, and Caleb and Roxie? They are that kind of soulmates.
This slow-burn, reverse age-gap romance (Roxie is 33, Caleb is 23) isn’t just about the forbidden tension—it’s about healing, vulnerability, and finding love in the darkest of places. Caleb isn’t your typical brooding jock; he’s emotionally open, unflinchingly raw, and devoted to the people he loves, even when he’s at his lowest. Watching his journey from reckless and broken to strong and whole is nothing short of mesmerizing. And Roxie? She’s exactly the anchor he needs, even as she battles her own past heartbreak.
If you love forbidden love, high angst, and a swoon-worthy, emotional rollercoaster with a well-earned happy ending, grab this book immediately. You’ve been warned: Caleb and Roxie will steal your heart.
This is the third title in the Puckered Hearts series by Ivy Fox and follows Boston Guardians star goalie Caleb Donovan.
Rating: ⭐⭐ Steam: 🌶️🌶️ 🩺 Strong heroine 🏒 Forbidden romance 🩺 Reverse age gap 🏒“You're…breathtaking." 🩺 Tearjerker with a whole lotta angst 🏒 He falls first 🩺 Two broken people (Grief, Hurt/Comfort) 🏒 Therapy positive
After a terrible tragedy sends him spiraling out of control, he's forced to face his demons—his emotions and triggers—head-on. And not just his feelings regarding the accident or the past—but for the beautiful therapist, Roxanne, who is being paid to help him navigate those rough emotional waters. Despite finding the attractive young man irritating, she also sees his pain, as well as her own. A pain, it seems, only the two of them can heal together.
Given the tropes and the reverse age gap, I was excited to get my hands on this one. It started out strong and engaging. However, towards the end, this book ultimately failed to resonate with me. This can be attributed to the toxic dynamics that eventually characterized the relationship, such as Roxie knowing and yet enabling some of Caleb's worst coping mechanisms and Caleb outright blackmailing her.
Kudos still to a story that skillfully delves into the complexities of therapy and its impact on individuals.
Favorite Quote: "Sometimes the best thing anyone can do for someone else is just… listen.”
Penalty To The Heart ( Puckered Hearts Book 3 ) well it’s official Ivy’s Puckered Hearts Series really does just keep getting better and better . After reading the first two books I actually thought to myself ( how can anything beat this ) each couple and each journey was so wonderfully written and so unique it was pretty much impossible not to fall in love . But something about Caleb and Roxie’s love story just touched my heart in ways I never ever expected. Oh how my heart literally broke for Caleb - when we first meet him he’s this outgoing, fun loving guy - his job is everything to him , there isn’t a women he can’t have but that quickly changes when he suffers a terrible tragedy and his life is literally turned on its axis . That’s when our heroine Roxie comes in ; she’s a therapist who is hired to help Caleb put his life back together both physically and emotionally. The more time they spend together the more their feelings evolve from friendship into so much more then either ever expects . Omg all the feelings Caleb and Roxie’s epic love story stirred in me I never saw coming . Hooked from the very first page , devouring every single word to the point I actually lost track of time . Feeling speechless , yelling outta pure frustration, smiling, laughing, sobbing like a baby and. Rooting so freaking hard . Penalty toThe Heart really was everything i mean everything. 💜💜💜💜
Penalty to the Heart pulled at every heartstring and is extremely emotional. Get the kleenex you'll need it!!
Grief, it hits hard and shakes up the entire Guardians' world, but none more so than Caleb Donovan's life. His story is so well crafted, so emotionally hard hitting that it left a huge mark on on heart. He's a notorious playboy, a fun loving screw up, but his life is forever changed after a devastating accident. The teasing glint in his eyes goes dim and Caleb is a shell. A walking zombie with a lot of pent up anger and grief. It's devastating to see Caleb wallowing in darkness, but thankfully he has family and his team looking out for him, even when Caleb doesn't want help.🥺
Dr. Roxanne Spencer is the therapist assigned to Caleb when he's spiraling out of control. Their sessions are eye opening, but also reveal that she too is a survivor of grief. Roxanne is absolutely amazing. She's patient, empathetic, so loving and understanding. The time she spends with Caleb is a level of angsty that just hits different. Their shared bond, their intense connection never waned as the line between patient and doctor began to blur, so their relationship evolved on a different level, but it became something unique and ultimately special.
So, yes, this book is tearful, emotional, and extremely heartfelt, but the payoff is so very worth it.
This is the third book in the Puckered Hearts series, and it is an emotional read that addresses important topics that people find themselves having to deal with in real life. While it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the series in order to understand the dynamics at play. Caleb is the fun-loving man who is a master of all he surveys. He has a job he loves and any woman he wants he can have, until an unfortunate accident upends it all. Roxie is the therapist who is tasked with helping Caleb pick up the pieces of his life and there is no one better to do it as she has been through her own dark days. However, as these two spend time together their attraction grows. This storyline runs through a myriad of emotions, and it is necessary to have tissues because as your heart bleeds the tears will run down your face. There is such artistry to the author’s writing style that just pulls you in from the beginning and the scenes just instantly paint pictures in one’s mind as the action plays out on the pages. There is so much to love that once you start reading, you will not be able to put it down. I recommend this book and cannot wait for what Ms. Fox has coming next.
Caleb, our favorite little brother of the Guardians, takes center ice in the third installment of the Puckered Hearts series. Having already fallen for him in the first two books, his journey from lovable annoying sidekick to resilient hero is nothing short of mesmerizing.
In book two, we saw tragedy strike Caleb’s life, forcing him to confront his deepest fears. Now, in this latest chapter, he begins to rebuild with the help of the team Psychiatrist, Roxie. Their dynamic is a beautiful blend of mutual healing, as Caleb not only faces his demons but helps Roxie face hers.
What I loved most about this story is Caleb’s evolution. He matures into the man we all knew he could be, but his journey is raw, real, and utterly compelling. As someone with a soft spot for Caleb, witnessing his growth was heartwarming. The way he and Roxie support each other adds an extra layer of depth to this already rich narrative.
Blessed with an advanced reader copy (ARC) by the author, I can confidently say this book holds its own in the series. It’s a captivating continuation that fans of the Puckered Hearts series will thoroughly enjoy.
Penalty to the Heart is a heartbreaking slow burn with a beautiful happy ending that follows Caleb and Roxanne's journey. He is dealing with current grief by acting out - drinking, fighting and causing trouble for his team, and Roxanne is assigned as his therapist.
This is an incredibly touching older woman/younger man story (she's 33, he's 23) which doesn't dwell on the age gap. Caleb is desperately struggling and the forbidden aspect comes from their professional relationship with Roxie working with Caleb over several months as the tension builds.
It's an emotional read, I had tears in my eyes on more than a couple of occasions for both happy and sad reasons. One aspect I loved is the emotional openness and vulnerability of Caleb who raises difficult subjects and cries openly with family and people he loves - not your stereotypical jock hockey player. He's also devoted to his brother's family, so even when he's falling apart and behaving at his worst, we see this other, caring, supportive side that shows who he really can be.
I read this as a standalone but will definitely go back and read the earlier books in the series now!
Released today, the latest book from @ivyfoxauthor will have you crying from beginning to end. This is a story of loss, grief, trauma, personal growth and finding oneself again through it all. It is a forbidden romance, reverse age gap romance set in a hockey environment. It is a tear jerker with so much angst.
Caleb has to deal with the fallout of an accident, an accident that has changed him from a light and happy person to one who is angry, hurt and broken. When his behaviour is out of control, he is given an ultimatum by his team - get out or he’s gone from the team.
Roxie reluctantly agrees to become his therapist, as a favour, but she knows his pain all too well. She still lives with her own grief.
The grief and growth is written so beautifully. The journey of Caleb and Roxie is exquisite, both heartbreaking and beautifully inspiring. I can’t truly describe the feelings I have after finishing this one. All I can say is you MUST read this one. A truly special book.
Thank you @ivyfoxauthor and @wordsmithpublicity for the e-ARC of this book. I can’t articulate how much I loved it, and the whole Puckered Heart series.
Man oh man this story and the emotional ups and downs. Book 2 ended with the accident and then this book just throws you right into.
Caleb is a professional Hockey goalie who seems to have gotten where he is because of his older brother Jack who always took care of him. He never took anything serious and was the life of the party. His brother comes to pick him up one night because he is drunk and ends up getting to a horrible car accident that leaves Jack in a coma. Caleb struggles with the guilt about his brother and spirals out.
Roxanne is the team therapist who, herself has struggled with grief and loss because her husband was killed. Roxanne works with Caleb however finds herself struggling with bringing up past grief for her.
This book was amazing installment to the series and all three books have kept my attention. It's hard to put the books down because I get so involved with the characters. Ivy has a way of writing that I feel like I need to know more. The depictions of the characters and the scenes laying out are relatable and believable.
I’ve adored Caleb from the very beginning of this series! His happy go lucky, carefree, and affable nature is gone in this book. After the massive cliffhanger from Power Play Rivals, he now has to figure out how to life a life without his brother, but his guilt and grief were all consuming. It was hard to see how he suffered, how some of those closest to him treated him, particularly his mother. As he starts to spiral, he’s forced into counseling, and that’s where he starts to develop his connection with Roxanne. I loved Roxanne! She knew exactly what Caleb was going through as she had gone through her own guilt and grief in the past. He certainly didn’t make things easy on her, but eventually, he started to open up to her. This was an extremely emotional story, I found myself reaching for tissues so many times. There were moments when I was heartbroken, and some when I was disappointed or angry with some of those in his inner circle. But there also seemed to be a bit of hopefulness throughout the book. Not always with Caleb, but he eventually got there! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.
After the cliffhanger in Power Play Rivals I suspected this book would put me through the wringer and so said so done. I cried, I laughed and I swooned and I enjoyed every minute of it. This book had me on an one emotional rollercoaster, Ivy Fox broke my heart but then thankfully put it back together. This was a beautifully written book about redemption, personal growth and love. I empathized so much with the hurt and guilt that both Caleb and Roxanne were battling with because of the loss and trauma they experienced. I adored Caleb from the first book in the series and loved his transition from boy to man. It was heartwarming that Caleb and Roxanne found strength and support in each other however I did not feel that intense chemistry between them. Although they did have a connection and I can't deny they were hot and steamy together, it would have been nice to feel a little more tension between them. I also, found certain aspect at the end was a bit abrupt. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters from the other books and their relationship with Caleb. Overall it was a good book that had me totally engrossed.
